Well, here's a shot to get your name (or your friends name) kinda out there... I felt inspired by seeing one of the best bands I've heard do a crazy set tonight, and I thought I'd share their awsome music with some of ya'll!
This is Ten Count Fall (http://www.Tencountfall.com) they go to the highschool here and are really amazing live, if you wanna hear them, check out the Downloads section. They just won a battle of the bands contest and got 5 grand to make a demo.
I'd love to see (and hear) some other unheard bands.

London Ontario:
Angry Agency
Fat Magic and the Slims
also: a band of grade 10 boys :O called GRAND THEFT GUMBALL just recently has been looked at by "the Salads" and now ''GTG'' gets to play with the salads. It's funny tho that they can only play if it is in the general area of London Ontario, if the place they are playing at is letting them play even tho they are not of age to be there lol.

My school has a mini "Battle Of The Bands" every year with students who formed their own bands. Anyone else's school do that?

I live near chicago and the bands that currently impress me are:
Entropy: http://www.empty-skies.tk
Hewhocorrupts: http://www.hewhocorrupts.com
Insurrection: http://www.insurrectionband.com
Pelican: http://www.hydrahead.com/pelican
It's mostly hardcore and metal, but all of these bands are tight as shit and put on great live shows. Insurrection is actually being scoped by Century Media right now, as they are friends with the guys from Enforsaken (on Olympic Records, a sub-label of Century).
Also, someone turned me onto this metal band from New York that are beyond good at what they do. My brother listens to only classic rock, and really artsy indie rock, but he flipped out when I played him this band's song "Foreshadowing the Endless Quest," and instrumental metal/classic epic.
