CNN MARKS CHENEY: NETWORK FLASHES 'X' OVER VP'S FACE DURING LIVE SPEECH
**Exclusive**
At 11:04:45 AM ET Monday CNN was airing Vice President Dick Cheney's speech live from the American Enterprise Institute in Washington -- when a large black 'X' repeatedly flashed over the vice president's face!
The 'X' over Cheney's face appeared each time less than a second, creating an odd subliminal effect.
As this DRUDGE REPORT screen capture reveals, while one 'X' flashed over Cheney's face CNN ran a headline at the bottom of its screen: "CHENEY: I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS WRONG TO CRITICIZE."
One top White House source expressed concern about what was aired over CNN.
"Is someone in Atlanta trying to tell us something?"
A CNN spokesman did not return repeated calls late Monday night.

So...what do you guys think? Computer error? Human error? Someone who doesn't like Cheney picking the wrong time to mess around?

Some kind of weird error, either that or this is fake, it is Drudge after all.
Just like the stupid Rice picture that was supposedly modified. If a news organization wants to hurt a political figure they have much better weapons available to attack people.

It's just part of the TV rating system. Cheney is rated "X", meaning he's too frightening for viewers under the age of 18.

Now...would you honestly be as cavalier towards this had it been an "X" over, say, Ted Kennedy's face?

Probably, I just can't believe is some nefarious scheme. A properly worded attack piece would be a million times more effective than putting an X on his face.
It involved a switcher, something we call a switcher. It's a machine that we use to switch between visual elements.
Now, that glitch resulted in that 'X' that you saw being flashed briefly across the screen as the vice president was speaking.
The story has made it on to the internet and various blogs in there.
In response, CNN has issued this statement.
'Upon seeing this unfortunate but very brief graphic, CNN senior management immediately investigated. We concluded this was a technical malfunction not an issue of operator error.'
Joining me to explain what happened Steve our CNN director of technical operations.
We're putting you on the hot seat here.
People at home are watching Vice President Dick Cheney.
What happened?
What were we trying to create behind the scenes?
At the end of the speech the plan was to do, to have a CNN logo up on the screen and use that as the way of getting back from the speech back to you on camera and one of the many graphics we use here at CNN.
MORE
A majority of graphics we use on the air, we use as a big x to identify at what point should the tape be cued up.
This is the x you see in the control room but it is never meant to be seen on the air.
It's being used.
The controlroom will use that kbrx to cue up the CNN logo to get it ready for air and as you see there, getting it ready.
We're doing this now, live. We're showing what you're trying to do exactly.
That is what was being prepared during the speech and due to the technical glitch that happened with the switcher, it accidentally got on the air because of the switch.
And it's the sort of thing that just like your computer will glitch and will suddenly lock up and do something weird, our equipment does the same thing on occasions.
ot something we can re-create to show you what happened.
Which is a really important point.
First of all, a switcher is a machine, not a person.
Correct.
When we were talking about doing the segment and said, let's do it again. You can't make it happen on purpose.
That's correct.
For all the conspiracy theories out there and we want to have someone who is trying to make a statement about the nature of vice president cheney's speech, it's a computer bug. Ours was in front of millions of people.

Okay then, I can respect that. Just too many people on here would be too quick to jump on the evil media bandwagon if it were anothe entity.
I personally think it was most likely a technical glitch, nothing really that bad. At worst, some low paid intern was screwing around. But I even doubt that.

If you run the clip backwards, you can lipread Cheney saying "I buried George, I buried George, I buried George". The X's mark the right section to invert.

It wasn't a nefarious scheme, but it was some stupid worker thinking he was funny. An error cannot happen like that except intentionally.

An error is unintentional by definition.

Ha, I don't need a "scandal" to know CNN sucks ass. An intentional error would be something you do on purpose then claim to be an error. Again to help you out, it was intentional, by some jack ass employee, but that doesn't mean it was some big CNN subliminal message attack on the American populus.

Yeah, Burritoclock. I guess the theory would make sense if there was any evidence to back it up. Since there's not, other than something Drudge pulled out of his ass, I think the most obvious explanation is a computer glitch.
But then again, you contend that it can't happen intentionally. I guess I should defer to you, the resident Ebaums World television production expert.

I said it can't happen UNintentionally. Also since this is the internet you have no idea how old I am, what I do for a living, if I went to college or what I studied if I did, so I thank you for deferring to me.

If you believe that then why are we discussing this? The only way I can see this being relevant is if some of you believe that this must be evidence of some widespread liberal media scheme to destroy the president. I know things havn't been going well for Bush supporters lately, but this is really grasping at straws.

CNN OPERATOR FIRED AFTER SUGGESTING 'X' OVER CHENEY WAS 'FREE SPEECH'
A CNN switchboard operator was fired over the holiday -- after the operator claimed the 'X' placed over Vice President's Dick Cheney's face was "free speech!"
"We did it just to make a point. Tell them to stop lying, Bush and Cheney," the CNN operator said to a caller. "Bring our soldiers home."
The caller initially phoned the network to complain about the all-news channel flashing an "X' over Cheney as he gave an address live from Washington.
"Was it not freedom of speech? Yes or No?" the CNN operator explained.
"If you don't like it, don't watch."
Laurie Goldberg, Senior Vice President for Public Relations with CNN, said in a release:
"A Turner switchboard operator was fired today after we were alerted to a conversation the operator had with a caller in which the operator lost his temper and expressed his personal views -- behavior that was totally inappropriate. His comments did not reflect the views of CNN. We are reaching out to the caller and expressing our deep regret to her and apologizing that she did not get the courtesy entitled to her. "

Because some CNN phone operator is a moron means someone in the control room must have done this intentionally? Was this operator in cahoots with the guy in the control room or something?
I have a hard time seeing how this makes your case.
If you keep believing the shit Drudge writes, you are going to get burned again and again.
