actually, I wasn't suggesting that CoB was emotional...that's the first band that came to mind when I looked at the pic of Katatonia so that was the first band that I listed...but the statement is still true, they sound like 1000 other bands that have come out in the last 3 years...what is so exciting about them? please...I'll give you a chance now and just tell me about their music and what makes them so special...to be honest...listenin to Dance of December Souls has made me dislike them even more...coming from my standpoint, I hate doom metal and I don't usually say that I "hate" anything...but going from doom metal to, as you rightly put it, post-rock is actually kind of depressing...but I say again, fans defend them to me, I'm open to change...
interesting read...
"The early releases of the band, feature mostly harsh vocals and can stylistically be considered doom or death metal. Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt performed the harsh vocals on Brave Murder Day and Sounds of Decay after regular Katatonia singer (and then drummer) Jonas Renkse became unable to scream properly. Katatonia moved to a lighter sound with clean vocals beginning with 1998's Discourage Ones. Another shift was seen with Viva Emptiness in 2003 in which the music became more vocal oriented than ever before."

Katatonia is a very original band, with a very original sound, vocally, lyrically, and instrumentally. There are VERY few bands that sound similar to Katatonia. The only band I can think of that's even comparable to them is Anathema and that's only a slight similarity. They've been together since '88, by the way, and shifted toward the lighter sound in '98, so any band that you claim came out in the past 3 years actually SOUNDS LIKE KATATONIA, and not the other way around. I don't think it's depressing to see a doom metal band actually produce clean music like this, It shows that they have alot of talent. As far as everything else you've stated, it's your opinion. Looking through all the positive comments in this thread about Katatonia, I can honestly say your opinion is worthless. Maybe you should listen to more than 1 song, and an early doom metal album before judging a band you know nothing about.

Dude, I'm not one to bash bands. I enjoy finding and listening to new things. I myself am much more into death metal, being as they tend to be far more technical. I'm not going to rip on this Katatonia band that you love so much, because I honestly just don't care about them. I listened to the mp3 link you posted, and I'm sorry to tell you, they are NOT instrumentally original. Not one bit. Are you even listening to the instruments behind the over-produced vocals? Do you not hear how slow and predictable every single one is? The bass player in particular is so boring, it’s frustrating. You need to hear faster more difficult music before you call this band original (instrumentally).

BTW I like this band. I have everything from Discouraged Ones to Viva Emptiness. Thanks again for mentioning them.
Hmmm.. yeah that came out wrong. True, I shouldn't judge the band based on one song, but that's all I've heard so far. I see they used to be a doom metal band, which is a genre I must admit to being new to. However, that one mp3 you posted, is not at all original, not one single bit of it. As for what I said earlier, I'm not really sure what I was saying. I do prefer faster techical stuff when I want entertainment from music. Not that I don't listen to other things at times. I wasn't trying to say that technicality equals originality. Rock in general tends to be a very pathed and predictable path to go down. Metal just hits my ears in a better way. I'll have to pick up their earlier albums.
BTW, I don't mean to sound negative with any of the stuff I said, just friendly discussion. :)

Well, Katatonia's style varies greatly. Their music is sometimes slow and sometimes heavy, and in a lot of cases, technical too. The mp3 that I posted is only a sample clip of the new song, not the whole mp3. How do you know the songs technicality doesn't change toward the end of the FULL clip? Like I've said, They have some fast and heavy songs, like "Ghost Of The Sun" for example, and some lighter songs, like this one. That's what makes Katatonia a very original band, and a very talented band as well. If you don't appreciate them for that, or think that they're talentless because they can actually play clean and melodic music, I'd recommend you to just back off. This is music for big boys. :)

For the record, I could give you a long list of bands that sound exactly like Children Of Bodom. They're not original. They feed off of an image that black metal bands created, and reproduce music that Dark Tranquility, In Flames, and At The Gates own.

There are many bands that sound like Cob...there are thousands of bands that sound like Katatonia...that's what I meant...and I will give I've only sampled two of their cd's but, unless they change their style on every cd (correct me if I'm wrong) then it's safe to assume that their early work was pseudo-doom metal and that now they are w/e you wanna call it...I got the gist of it, but if you are suggesting that I need to listen to all of their work to judge them properly then sure, but I'm not going to go listen to every cd by them just to tell you that you're wrong.

I'm loving that you're so stuck on them though, I'll let you know that they're not my favorite band or anything, but again, the first band that I thought of as I actually thought the picture of Katatonia slighly resemelbed them (accept for hair color)...
if you knew anything about black metal then you'd know that CoB can hardly be defined as such...9 times out of 10 black metal bands just sound like sped up doom metal...Dimmur Bourgir (or however you spell it) and other crap like that wear tacky bracelets, facepaint and just sell an image...CoB does none of that, they based their name on one event and don't claim to be demons or any crap like that...or even CoF hardcore where they reference Edgar Allen Poe...it's just stupid...
And the fact that you think In Flames owns says a lot about what kind of sound you like...
but you know what, this has gone on too long...I will agree to disagree with you. I believe that K is boring in their sound and you don't...I obviously can't change your opinion on that and won't try to. Over...

No, no, no. I always get the last word. Especially after a post like that.
I'll say it again and again, There are no other bands that sound like Katatonia. If you think so, feel free to share. Now, If you happen to know any bands that sound very similar to Katatonia that started out after '88, then how would that affect Katatonia's originality? You don't become unoriginal if a band copies your sound. CoB, on the other hand sound like a lot of other shit. They sound like every other melo-death metal band out there - Dark Tranquility, At The Gates, and In Flames are considered to be the pioneers of melo-death, by the way. They OWN the genre, and to be honest, CoB is an obvious ripoff of Dark Tranquility.
I never defined CoB as black metal, I said that they produce a black metal image, Not a black metal sound. Their album covers, their imagery, style, appearance, etc. all resemble that of black metal, only minus the lame makeup.
I didn't say In Flames owns, I said they own a big piece of the melodic death metal genre that CoB tries to follow. Personally, I don't care for In Flames.
Agreeing to disagree is a good thing. Buh-bye.

Ignore his posting of In Flames. That was a strike against him. They had some decent stuff, but fagged it up with the later releases. Plus, COB does not have any black metal ideologies or sound to them. I think you Stupified was thinking of COF. COB falls a mellowdick style of metal, best done by Arsis, At The Gates, Dark Tranquility, ETOS or Suidakra.
"Pseudo-Doom?" Nope. It's full fledged hard on doom. Try picking it up again.
And calling me "Delta guy?" First, band = Mekong Delta. 2nd, my name is Metallic, or "God." :D
And if you want a band similar in comparison to Katatonia, follow Setenced's Discography, it's similar.

Come on, You of all people should know that In Flames helped pioneer the melodic death genre that CoB falls under. At least that's what many people like to think.

Well yeah, In Flames did help start the genre, but they certainly fagged it up. The new stuff is the new in mallcore. I don't mind In Flames stuff before Colony however.

You can probably take any picture from Google image search and say the same.
Anyway, the photo I linked to proves that they're trying to feed off of the black metal image in a slight, but obvious way. You can tell just by looking as the two pictures and comparing.

Right, I joined this forum just to get on this topic. First off, out of all the bands I listen to (and I listen to A LOT believe me) Katatonia is by far my favourite band.
How many bands do you know whose sound has changed so much over the years, but still retain the same atmosphere and emotion they kept from the beginning?
From their corpse-paint days from Jhva Elohim Meth to Viva Emptiness, Katatonia has always been Katatonia. Anyone who says they suck instrumentally needs to listen to the riffs on Last Fair Deal Gone Down and Brave Murder Day. Don't judge them on a two minute clip. Anders "Blakkheim" Nystrom is a personal idol, his guitar work is ALWAYS amazing. Be it on Diabolical Masquerade, Bloodbath or Katatonia songs. Jonas' vocals are the most genuine and sincere I've ever heard. How can anyone call them overproduced? His drumming is also incredible. Simple beats, yes, but how many drummers do you know that actually convey emotion through the tone of their drums?
I'm not going to waste my time on Tool fanboys or kiddies who compare Katatonia to Children Of Bodom (How the hell can you compare them to a power metal band??). I've heard enough Black/Death/Doom metal to know that Katatonia is one of the most amazing and untouchable bands out there.
By the way, Viva Emptiness is a great album, but in my opinion their best is Discouraged Ones.

I finished 12 years of school last month, went for the traditional party week at a seaside town with the rest of the graduates in the city. On the third day I went to an internet cafe and saw that all the information for The Great Cold Distance was put online...It ruined the rest of my stay because I wanted to get home so I could hear My Twin :P

I liked what I heard. I'd be nice to find another band that doesn't recycle shit and pass it off as their own like most other bands today. It's hard to get a true idea of what they're all about from one clip, but it's peaked my interest and I'll check them out.
When I listened to Katatonia, I liked them. They have a good sound to them. But I agree with whoever it was that said their beats and vocals are a bit predictable.
Don't take this the wrong way, but I've just got to say I really don't like you very much, and I find it funny that you post thinking people will take your opinion seriously. You've had 27 posts and not a single one has shown that you're any smarter than a monkey. Sorry, I just had to be blunt.

If you have bittorrent, go to www.mininova.org or http://isohunt.com. They both have it. I have 30 MB left on the file to dl and my dl just went down to 1 kb/s = Gay jewerey.
EDIT: There's only one seeder on the file, and he could just have finished the dl and not closed the window yet. If that is the case, I could get stuck at 99% again, we need more seeders.

My favorites so far are Soil's Song, My Twin, Increase, and Consternation. I'm convinced that'll change when I listen to the album again and again. I'm telling you...As soon as many people discover Katatonia, they're gonna be a really famous band.

Your best bet is to type in that suffix and "codecs" in google. See if any message boards had discussions on it and see if someone recomended a good codec pack. K-lite codec pack is good but that's all I can remember at the moment.

Sounds like a bad version of Tool.
Why are so many people nowadays comparing every band to Tool and calling them rip-offs? For how long has this Tool been around? Katatonia has been from -88 and it has sounded like Katatonia, nothing else, throughout all of their albums. They have their very own unique style and judging them by just one song, as some people have done in this thread, seems stupid....
Pink Floyd has inspired for example both Tool and Anathema, but out of those two bands I prefer Anathema a lot. I saw them perform a few days back in Finland and they were amazing! I just don't get this Tool-hype. It's ridiculous comparing each and every band to them!! I have to admit that I haven't heard their very first albums, but I suppose that those bashing Katatonia haven't heard Katatonia's first albums either. And don't get me wrong, I like Tool, but I have never thought of them to be the most original thing there is. Just good music.

Jesus Christ. You obviously do not play any intrument or know anything about music (music as in actual music. Not genres, music)... The first thing I learned when I picked up the Saxophone and Guitar is that any moron can play fast. It takes true talent, to have patience with a song, to take time. Fast Tempos are soooo much easier to play at, slow ones take thought...
