If you guys are going to pick based on personal opinions of what music you like, then this is a stupid thread. If you're actually going to weight the facts such as impact on music, innovation, popularity, career span, and overall quality of music then many of you are really off base with the bands you think are the best ever. All things considered I would have to say The Beatles are the best band ever, but I have not heard all the music out there and I have not sat down and carefully compared bands based on criteria other then my personal opinion on the music they make. I suggest you guys be a little more logical with your picks instead of posting your favorite bands, Metallica is obviously not the best band ever, Tool is obviously not the best band ever.
Provide some substance to your posts instead of just posting your favorite bands.

I chose kraftwerk because they revolutionised popular music by taking electronic music, which had previously been mostly experimental and novelty tracks, and brought it into the mainstream, they where hugely influential on such a diverse range of genres including rock, hip hop, techno, synthpop, goth, industrial, idm, trance, drum & bass, electro and many more

...besides, The Velvet Underground started a decade worth of music and is a continuing influence. So, i guess I considered both...

My opinion, is that there is no best band in the world. You have to look at it this way, which band paved way for MANY more bands. Which band was all musically talented. I don't know I really know a lot of them, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Hendrix, The Ramones, those are all examples that paved way for tons of bands. I can't pick any of them because there IS no best band in the world. Would you pick all the people who basically "created" music. See there really can't be a best band. Everyone is going to disagree.

I don't think any band paved any way for any other band. In the music industry it's who you know, not what you know. Those you need to know are the executives and their gophers who run the recording companies unfortunately.

Now you say The Beatles are the Best Band ever.. I say it's a very close tie between The Beatles and Led Zeppelin (Keep in mind, these bands are not my favorite).
The Beatles Started off simple, basically simple pop tunes. Nothing that's very meaningful, still stunning for the time period. But time showed Paul has an incredible style of songwriting, and so does John (the two together is what I like to call an auditory orgasm). George Harrison is often looked over, but his ability to produce and arrange music, harmony, and instrument settings is very very impressive. And look at Ringo.. he's soo.... umm..
So, as far as biggest impact on music, these guys take the cake
however
Led Zeppelin is one of those bands that have that sort of music-mystic to them. Jimmy Page is probably the best guitar player of the generation. Anything, 12-string, 6-string, 5-string,.. The guy invented his own style of tuning for Christ's Sake. Do you guys realize that on Led Zeppelin IV the band wouldn't allow singles to be sold, therefore Stairway to Heaven (arguably the most popular Rock n' Roll song there is period) didn't make it on the Billboard Charts, yet still remains a staple in Rock Music. Think about that for a second, they didn't even put there name or title the album to see if the music would sell itself.. It did, it did.
for shits and giggles I'd like to throw Pink Floyd into the mix, because they created an album that stayed on the top 100 for ohhh... 14 YEARS!
So, in between all of these, I'd say Led Zeppelin.
The Greatest Band to Walk The Earth
(now only imagine if Clapton had not left The Yardbirds, imagine if he were there for the creation of Led Zeppelin, how would they sound? Would they be worse, or better.. It's a debate... But God only knows what kind of stupid things would be said in here. No Offence)

Haha kinda a bad question. Everyone has diffrent musical tastes so there will be no clear winners, there will be general favorites but no definative winner. For example most people might say the beatles, hendrix, nirvarna.. even blink. but im pretty sure no one person has ever listened to all the music thats in the world, it would take a life time. So the greatest band may be a little known punk / rock / rap/ classical / alternative in the middle of the uk.
Answer is, if you have any idea of music, and appreciate most styles you cant have a 'best band ever' because every band well known band has a well known song or two. you have personal favs.. but asking best band ever is pointless :)
Oh and i hate people who bash people for listening to a certain style, even if i dont like a band, i can listen to a song and understand why it might be liked by some

Bono does have a good voice indeed.
Adam Clayton is a good bassist; and Edge's main job is to add effects over his basslines, and occasionally something more. He does it well, but the thing is that he doesn't do that much else. He has based a career on Run Like Hell (Pink Floyd) and extended a bit. U2's style changed. Edge's didn't. I find that he gets insanely repetitive after a while. Personally, I think he's good at what he does, but he isn't that versatile.
That said, I don't mean to seem like I'm attacking your post, and I do like U2.

If you guys are going to pick based on personal opinions of what music you like, then this is a stupid thread. If you're actually going to weight the facts such as impact on music, innovation, popularity, career span, and overall quality of music then many of you are really off base with the bands you think are the best ever.[/b] 3 of the 5 criteria you listed are still opinion based in the long run. That's what I don't get about when people say "who's the greatest band ever" and some people think there's a factual way to decide. Unless there's a set criteria in the question, and the criteria is provable with objective data and doesn't rely on people's judgement, it's all up to opinion. Like for instance "who's the top selling bad ever?" would be a factual question. "Who's the greatest ever" is clearly opinion.
I can't seem to find out who the top selling band is but the top selling album is The Eagles Greatest Hits and the most successful act based on the UK singles and albums charts is Elvis Presley.
Everyone says the Beatles influenced all music but considering the grand spectrum of things the Beatles are relatively new to music. They were only big about 40 years ago and written western music has existed for centuries in it's present form. The Beatles can't take credit for any of the great stuff that came before the 60's.. and really they get too much credit for the stuff that came after the 60's. It's as if a lot of people generally believe thousands of years of musical progress would've came to a screeching halt if it weren't for the Beatles.. it's absolutely ridiculous.

People also study the works of The Beatles, http://research.umbc.edu/~morin/handlist.htm
That's just one link to one school, who knows how many others are related. Sadly though, I think you're right about The Beatles being forgotten eventually, but that is due to the decline in our culture and our overall decline in music taste. It isn't due to The Beatles not making a big enough impact on music.

That seemed like a study on the Beatles impact on society rather than a study of their music. People study classical artists for the perfect demonstration of music theory.. not cause it gives them nostalgia and memories of "groovy times." The Beatles are cool and all but as far as impact goes they are nowhere near the most important band/artist to impact western music.. there were guys making much bigger impacts 300 years ago that are still studied by every formally trained music student in the western world. The only objective area they can really hold their own in is record sales/popularity. In that area I will agree, they were the best ever. Nothing before or since has compared to "Beatlemania."

I'm going with the Velvet Underground. Second would be Bob Dylan circa 1966 playing with The Band, at the height of his lyrical prowess. Third any Miles Davis group from 1968 to 1976.
But really it's the Miles Davis group who played on Kind of Blue. John Coltrane, the greatest saxophone player ever, Miles = god, Cannonball Adderly, Jimmy Cobb, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, and Paul Chambers.
I'd say the Velvets because Lou wrote the best rock songs, they could play ballads or the craziest feedback 30 minute jams Hendrix never played (and couldn't). Plus they were the best live band ever.
Whoever made the Stairway to Heaven comment, remember they stole alot of that song from a Spirit song. For more information read this:

I'm not basing the bands off influence. In fact, influence is almost a non-existent factor when I judge bands. I'm just saying that was a great post for illustrating: a.) Why classical music is remembered... b.) Why the Beatles probably won't be remembered.
