I love gun battles in movies, but lately there hasnt been any movies with a realistic, awesome, gun battle. Some of my favs.

and probably the last samurai, when cruise and friend get destroyed by guns, a symbol of rapid change and lackluster care for culture, their samurais are useles.. this was a very powerful scene for me.

Equilibrium has some great scenes, as does the first Matrix. But some other flicks with good gun fights:

True Romance - Final gunfight is the best gun fight ever.

The Killer - A phenominal John Woo shootout at a church.

A Better Tomorrow - Another great Woo shootout.

Taxi Driver - Nice on around the end, even though it's not an action flick.

The Untouchables - An underrated fight, the one at the train station (featuring a baby carriage and jeopardy!)

The Wild Bunch - "The Battle of Bloody Porch" where people are just dying left and right thanks to the power of a western machine gun.

Nikita - The Kitchen Shootout.

Something interesting about that famous scene from Heat you might not know:

The director Michael Mann wanted everything about his film to be spot on so he hired ex SAS to come in and train Val Kilmer, Robert De Niro and the other guy how to move and cover and stuff like that.
They also showed them how they would do things in other scenes too like the bit where they drive a truck at the security van and rob all the barabonds (sp) before executing the gaurds.

So realy when you are watching the shoot-out scene with the police you are realy watching an SAS training excersize.... Only difference is the SAS probably wouldnt be hit.

I'm going to add another vote for Unforgiven. It's not just the action, but the buildup and dialouge during it that makes it, and so many other Clint Eastwood fights so great.

For sheer action nothing can beat the first time Neo and Mr. Smith really went at it in the matrix. Up to that point, I had never even seen something like that. I don't think anyone on here can say they weren't impressed when Neo started bending back dodging bullets and all of the sudden the agents had a worthy foe.

I haven't seen Heat yet(although what I've heard is good) but I would definitely rent Boondock Saints. Cool movie.

'Hot Shots: Part Duex' - The whole second half of the movie.

I don't agree with westerns having good gun fights. Two guys standing in the street, calling each other 'yella bellied', Two shots ring out and one guy falls over. The only western I've seen with a good gun fight is 'Purgatory'.

Not a battle by any means, but in Collateral, when Tom Cruise comes out and Foxx is still tied in the taxi and that wigger dude stole his briefcase. Some of the coolest seconds of any action film, IMO.

the rock- when the marines have the seals surrounded and ed harris is are screaming at michael biehn, "YOU SWORE AN OATH TO DEFEND THIS COUNTRY!!" everybody is all tense, not knowing what to do. then the birck falls and all hell breaks loose.

in we were soldiers, when the are charging up the hill controlled by NVA, and you think theyre all going to die. then the helicopters come up behind them and tear the nva apart.

in aliens when the marines are in the nuka plant, and theyre all geting killed because they have no weapons and dont kno wtf is going on. you hear drake and vasquez shooting and eveyone else dropping like flies, "sarge is gone lets GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!!!!"

1. Saving Private Ryan - The opening and the end are excellent action sequences.

2. Heat- You'll notice the gun shots sound loud in Mann's films, just as they do in real life. As MI6 said, these scense were partly choreographed by Nick Gould and Andy McNab and it shows.

3. Proof of Life- Crap movie but great action sequence at end.
