Could somebody tell me exactly what it is that makes black metal black metal? I was thinking it was the vocals... But a bunch of my melodic death sounds just like black...

when we say Black Metal we mean a specific sound:fast tremolo riffing, blasting drums, and satanic lyrics delivered in a high-pitched shriek. There are endless variations, but that is the basic style.

bands such as Dark Tranquility and In Flames injected a dose of old-school guitar harmonies into their Death Metal. The movement was soon known as "Melodic Death Metal", "Gothenburg Style", or derisively "Gothenburger".

Listen to In Flames and then listen to Immortal. You will definitely be able to tell the difference.

Im not too big on death metal, the vocals turn me off. Im more into the grunts/low growls of death.

Melodic, majestic, cold sound quality, fast bass drums and guitar picking, screaming vocals, "dark aura", epic lyrics about vikings, forests, norwegian mountains, mysticism, paganism, etc... I think that's the uniting criterias. Black metal and classical > everything else

You're a moron. The vocals, instruments, and lyrics are all vastly different for black, death, and doom metal. You probably haven't checked out any of it before, so you should just shut up before you make yourself look like an even bigger ass.

Hectate Enthroned is probably my favorite black metal band. All of you who are interested should check them out.

You think I'm surprised at that revelation? No. I just don't care about the differences. Because they have one thing in common. One thing that is commonly repulsive. The fucking vocalist. It's kind of funny that the band known as The Gathering has it's early and later incarnations at opposite ends of my spectrum. The difference? In 1995, getting rid of the male growling vocalist and picking up one of the best female vocalists on Earth. At least as far as allmusic guide is concerned, their first album with her, Mandylion, is one of the highlights in the history of metal, "a groundbreaking achievement". They never would have done that without the vocal change.
