Now, I can't start rambling off classical artists and their work, but I know a good classical piece when I hear one. Does anyone have a favorite classical song? Mine is Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel. What a great tune, especially done on electric guitar.

canon is difinitely my favorite song as well, next would be symphony No. 9 (2nd movement), the blue danube waltz as well as minuet in g, but the very first classical song i ever liked, at around age 10, was ride of the valkyries

I dunno, that's hard...I might say Moonlight (sonata) by Beethoven.
Bolero by Ravel is pretty sweet too, don't know if it's technically classical though....

Cannon in D is a really catchy theme but that's basically all it is.. a theme. Beethovens 7th Symphony (the one with Moonlight Sonata) is one of the few classical pieces that I really get into. I mean classical is almost always beautiful music I just never really pay much attention to it but something about that particular piece is just so haunting to me..

Um....that's incorrect, Moonlight Sonata is NOT part of or/in 7th Symphony. And it doesn't make any sense either, a symphony and a sonata are two completely different things. Just to let you know, the piece you're probably talking about is called Sonata #14 in c#, Op 27-2 'Moonlight' Adagio
Anyways, I'm glad there's a Classical Music Thread because it's one of top favorite genres. In fact, of the 77Gbs of music I have, Classical is around 35Gbs. So, yea here's the list of my top 10 favorite pieces. PM/IM if you guys want or are looking for something, I might just have it.
1) Beethoven, Sonata 14 in c#, Op 27-2 'Moonlight' Adagio 1st Movement
2) Beethoven Symphony No. 9, Op. 125, D Minor “Choral”
3) Chopin, 3 Nocturnes, Op. 9i B flat min
4) Tchaikovsky, Symphony 6 in b, Op 74 'Pathétique' - 1 Adagio - Allegro non troppo
5) Tchaikovsky, Nutcracker, Act2 - 13 Waltz of the Flowers
6) Tchaikovsky, Nutcracker, Act2 - 12c Tea (Chinese Dance)
7) Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake, Act 1 - 01 Introduction & Scène
8) Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake, Act 2 - 10 Scène
9) Beethoven, Symphony 6, 1st Movement
10) Beethoven, Op. 21 - I Allegro con brio, Symphony No. 5 in C minor
Like I said, if you guys are interested in something, just PM/IM.

I like the Glenn Gould Piano Sonatas. Hannibal Lecter was listening to them in Silence of the Lambs - and I liked the sound of them, so I decided to get hold of them.

I'll take your word for it I guess.. though every version of Beethoven's 7th I've downloaded has been the same thing and it's all just one 14 minute piano piece with 3 movements, the first of which being Moonlight sonata. In fact I thought it was weird that a "symphony" would only have one instrument.. but like I said I downloaded several different files and they were all the same. I guess it's just a serious case of mislabeling. I don't really pay attention to classical music.

Classical music is a very high form of music. So I wouldn't be disparaging it without reason. And I do hope you realise that a lot of metal draws from classical music.

While I have respect for classical music, in that it took talent to compose it, I find it a bit boring to listen to. Some pieces are good though.

Yeah, actually. In my music class we recently listened to a boy's choir, and it was a really good song. I have no idea what it was called or who it was by, though.

You might like some Thomas Tallis, Gregorio Allegri or William Byrd then. We didn't do music class in my school...

Lmao, except it's not composed by Mozart mate. The sooner you open your mind to more music beyond prog rock the better, and I say that as someone who understands where you are coming from.

Henry VIII is rumoured to have done so, but there is no evidence, it is generally credited as (Traditional). And cushlinkes, don't think I was trying to cuss you mate, I can understand your viewpoint as I was once exactly the same, loved my prog rock and listened to little else at all.

Well, I know Mozart did a version of it, because I have one classical album which has a bunch of Mozart, and Greensleeves is one of them. I don't listen to much classical, so I don't know much about it. And I do listen to more than prog. Prog is my favorite, but I listen to some other stuff, still mostly classic rock, like AC/DC, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, etc. I've been listening to some opera lately too, Roger Waters Ca Ira, even though Roger Waters did come from a prog background.

You know what, I think the song we listened to in music class was a Byrd song.
Then again, I could just be remembering the name from something else in music class...

My absolute favorite classical song is Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue...I could listen to that song forever.
Others include anything by Mozart, and Handel's Messiah.
And quit bashing classical. just because you guys don't have the mental and intellectual capacity to understand it, doesn't mean you should dismiss it. Go listen to your godamn mindless piece of crap "music" that you call rap and get the hell outta here.:dunce:

I like to catergorize this as "contemporary classical" Yeah I also like 20th century Gerswhin, but I still consider it classical as well.

Yeah, classical music is divided up into six eras:
Medieval
Renaissance
Baroque
Classical
Romantic
Modern
Gustav Holst is in the Modern section of that. John Cage, who I mentioned on the first page of this thread, is also a modern composer. Though, I'm disappointed that no one picked up on the joke. (4'33" is a song that is four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence.)
