To hold the strap on it. Too cheap to get the strap button fixed or get strap locks.
Either that^^ or they think it makes them look cool and rebelious.

You know you are a retarded bass player if you
1. play gigs with short hair and white shirts
2. Play with a pick
3. Think your bass is a shotgun and try to shoot the crowd
Conclusion: those guys are retards.

What does short hair/white shirts have to do with anything?

:wah:
but I wanna be like Nikki Sixx
You guys do know Flea uses a pick sometimes right? Don't get me wrong, I'm a bassist myself and I hate most pickers. But just because you use a pick doesn't automatically make you a bad bassist. Flea uses one, Dave Schools uses one (If you don't know who that is, look into a band called Widespread Panic, he's awesome), but 99% of pickers do suck donkey taint.

Holy hell, what an idiotic comment.
Hair or shirt color have nothing to do with skill.
Many great black metal and death metal bands use picks.
Steve Harris does the shotgun thing.

1. What does the color of your shit and the length of hair hair have to do with your skill.
2. A pick makes a different sound from fingers. I personaly like the sound of a pick over fingers but that is me.
3. He was not using his bass as a shotgun, It just likes like it from the angle
4. You are a dumb norwegian fucktard who only comes to this forum to start flame wars by saying idiotic stuff like nuke israel and kill americans.

Strap locks are like 3 bucks. I hardly think it's because they're cheap. They'd buy a $200+ bass, a $200+ amp, $15 strap, etc. with a total worth of about $600 depending, and they can't spare $6 for a pair of strap locks? Unlikely. They just want to look like faggots.
Edit: I guess I kind of rephrased what killer scott said.

Yeah, strap locks are cheap. But the strap button that is screwed into the guitar frequently wears the wood out, falls out and needs to be redrilled with a bigger screw or filled and then redrilled for a new strap button. It happens all the time, I sold Gibsons for a few years at a guitar shop after college when I didn't want to get a real job. It's a common repair.
They don't want to look like faggots, they are just lazy and cheap.

Wow, I never knew Flea ever used a pick. I guess he has pretty good tone for someone who uses a pick then.

Dude, it's not just about the music, you can't play a fucking gig looking like a football homo. There's a thing called image.

Image means nothing dude.
I used to have long hair and look like a metalhead. Now, I cut my hair and look quite the opposite. Image doesn't determine how you can play a show, or what kind of music you play or listen to.
The only reason we get bands like Shitknot and Korn being calling "metal" is because of their getup. FUCK Image. Bands should like like what ever is easiest for them.

usually i'd just let the other members take care of this one. But i just can't let this one slide by. Image means nothing as long as you are good. If you can play your instrument and play it well, long hair and a white shirt mean about as much as a bolt through the cock when you're playing a gig.

Yes, but it still looks fucking retarded and wrong. It's like showing up in a funeral with a hawaii shirt, beach shorts and sunglasses on your head.

kudos on the analogy, but nobody goes to a concert to see what the band is wearing, except for maybe a couple of photographers from E! but who gives a shit about them. People go to hear a band play, to hear how good a band really is without synthesizers and all the electronic crap from the studio. I could play a concert bare-ass naked and if everyone thought i was good, they'd cheer their hearts out.

Who are "people" then? Everyone are different you know, perhaps some only care about the music but I'd think most people care about the whole stage presence and aura at a show as well. Stage effects, costumes/make up, all sorts of stuff like that... A gig with only music to me is like a drama with just voices.

stage effects, costumes, make up. That wouldn't make it a concert, that would make it a musical. Nobody goes to madison square garden to see dream theater perform west side story. The musician's presence alone should be enough for that aura you're looking for. otherwise you shouldn't have paid to see them play.

Queen. Best show my father ever saw. All he talks about is the costumes, the effects, and the naked women on bikes. For some bands there is that theatrical element that makes them just that much better. Of course, Queen would be awesome in white shirts and with short hair.

Bullshit. Image is everything in the music industry, it aint glamerous and its shallow as fuck. Unless your behind the scenes, then no one gives a shit because your working for the guy/girl who got the gig cos they had a better image than you.

Image is important in the music industry when we are talking about such genres as pop music. In this case producers are more interested looks, rather than talent. Yes it is complete bullshit, and that's why I don't listen to that type of music. But when you get into genres such as metal, image is not such a factor...it's more a basis of talent and originality that gets people signed.
So having said that, I will say that image is nothing in terms of how a band sounds, how talented they are, how cool they are, etc... You don't need to have gimmicks to be a good band, just be able to play well and be original.
