View Full Version : Whoring out SS? Rethink that.

GM was THOUGHT to be whoring out the SS name. But I've noticed a lot of the SS models are actually quite good compared to today's standards...
2006 Impala SS:
0-60 in 5.7 seconds
303 HP 323 lb/ft
People always rag on the Impala because it's FWD. Well the Impala SS(RWD) of the years 94-96 ran a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. Ignorance.
2006 Cobalt SS:
0-60 in 6.0 seconds
205 HP 200 lb/ft
GM's first real tuner car, and already they've eliminated almost ALL the import competition for the price.
2006 Trailerblazer SS:
0-60 in 5.5 seconds
395HP 395 lb/ft
People rag on this without even knowing of it's specs. It's a fast SUV, simple as that.
2007 Colorado SS: (Rumor)
0-60 in 4.0-5.0 seconds (estimated)
400 HP 400 lb/ft
The Colorado SS is an actual truck, with it's lightweight body(compared to the Lightning and SRT) it'll definately be a surefire hit.
2007 Corvette SS: (Rumor)
0-60 in 3.0-3.5 seconds (estimated)
650 HP 600 lb/ft
The famed Blue Devil was said to be named the SS. A demon from the sounds of it.
2006 Silverado SS:
0-60 in 6.7 seconds
345 HP 375 lb/ft
This truck comes with a Vortec 6.0L V-8, extended cab, and AWD. It's a sporty truck, not a race truck.
2006 Malibu MAXX SS:
0-60 in 7.8 seconds (estimated)
240 HP 245 lb/ft
This is the worst representation of the SS ever. But I think GM never intended it's use as a SS, just a test vehicle with a sporty name for use of their new potent 3.9L V-6. It's also found in the sport version of the G6 Coupe.
2006 SSR:
0-60 in 5.5 seconds
400 HP 400 lb/ft
Yes, I consider this a SS vehicle. It's a hotrod truck. Simple as that, and from reviews. It's very unpractical, but VERY, VERY fun.
So what... One, maybe two of those vehicles arn't fitting of the SS name. Sure they don't live up to the old SS muscle cars of the 60s and 70s, but they sure do leave an impression in the current auto market. Just like they did back in the 60s and 70s.
I will admit, sure theres a few too many SS models. It used to be exclusive, but look at what Dodge did to HEMI, it's mostly a marketing ploy, but at least Chevy puts the SS badge on cars fitting of the SS badge for the most part. Minus one or two.
EDIT: Forgot one.
2006 Monte Carlo SS:
0-60 in 5.6 seconds
303 HP 323 lb/ft
Monte Carlos are pretty sexy, and this one runs a pretty good 0-60 time. I'd say it is worthy of the badge.

My favorite one is prolly the Colorado. I <3 trucks. If someone offered me a 2006 Z06 or my truck with an LS7 6 speed, I would pick the truck. Haul ass and haul... dirty mexicans? :confuzed:

The only beef I have is with the Corvette SS. I'm mean... it's a little more than just a super sport. They should've called the Z06 the SS and the soon to hit the market SS a Z06 - seeing as how the Z06 is a more racing, track car related name. The last Corvette SS made was horrible. Hit the shits at Sebring I believe. Hardly worth commemorating at all.

The Z badge was the "whore" at the Chevrolet Facility in the 90's. After she got sexual diseases they threw her away and got a new "whore". Her name was SS, she was a little bit old but she had rep. ...In a nutshell I'm saying, they whored out the Z badge in the 90's. Beretta, Cavaliers, Truck Line, Corvette, Camaro. They all had Z# badge models. Well the Cavalier is gone, the Beretta is gone, the Camaro is gone. The only vehicles left with the Z badge is the Vette(soon to be a medium model) and the offroad truck models.

Good post. To be honest I didn't know that Impala SS was front wheel drive. That is kinda lame, but other than that I am suprised that some of those cars have that good of performance numbers.

What about the other Monte Carlo SS's with the regular L36 3800 S2? They suck...But yeah I get your point...They also have a non-supercharged Cobalt SS sedan that puts out like 170hp from a larger 4cyl.
I DO love the new grand prix GXPs...But I wish they would do something better with the suspension than simple put larger front tires on vs the rear tires... 255 fronts and 225 rears...odd...

I guess dropping a big V8 in a front wheel drive family car is GM's new fad
lol, gm is still stuck with 4 speed autos while the competetion moved on with 5 speed or even 6 speed auto transmissions. I believe the ford fusion has a 6 speed auto
GM = teh sux

Look at the consumer rating. That's all that matters, so shut up.

eat me you stupid cunt. any person that knows cars understands that V8 + FWD = horrible understeer. GM has been stuck using pushrod engines for way too long. yet reliable, they produce very little power. their V6's produce as some of imports small 4 cylinders.
and there.. im waiting for you to throw childish insults at me saying imports suck and domestics rule. haha. I hope your piece of shit flips over one day while your trying to top it out going 85 mph. Dont worry, ill be there on your grave the next day droppin a hot loaf on your tombstone. fucking ignorant little shithead. if you havnt noticed i was acctually giving the ford fusion props. but once again, your too ignorant to see that.
you never provide proof when your argueing. you say the same shit over and over which obviously pulled out of your ass

Oh dear. It's that time of the month again, huh? Let me say this again, whether you like it or not, consumer rating is all that matters to manufactors. I'm not getting into specifices with you anymore since it always end up in a domestic vs. import war. Calm the fuck down.
Internet. Serious Business.
BTW, the one throwing childish insults, saying the same shit over and over again, and starting to provoke someone would be you. Want proof? Re-read your post.
P.S. Stop talking shit about a SUV, that you never drove or actually sat in. Thanks. I'll be the bigger man and see myself out.

pat, the impala was never deemed or concidered a muscle car. Even back in the day when it was the shit if that even existed it wasn't concidered a muscle car.
gm doesn't have a good leadership right now you know this.. you also know they build good cars and so forth.. so please keep your gm hating to a minimum before im forced to bash your ass some.
besides it's funny how a 1993 mustang v8 gets better gas milage then your 4banger shitbox

Technically or non technically? - Certain models of Impala was considered a Muscle Car by a large number of enthusiests...Like the SS 427, or the 409ci 'Pala...
Shit, even the 94-96 Impalas were deemed 'the return of the muscle car'.
...but.... I understand what you're saying...Small cars with large engines = muscle cars...Like the Chevelle, 442, Challenger, ect...

good info but I didn't really mean small cars with big engines are muscle cars.. If you talk to some of the older people that lived back during those days and took part in the street racing and shit.. they'll tell you impalas were too heavy and too big be get out of there own way.

because not every one races their car everyday, chevy does only care
about the rating, why, because it makes them money

If I recall correctly, in a motor trend that I read the FWD V8 Chevy's did not understeer as bad as I would have expected them too. They actually may have handeled decent and compared to RWD and AWD counterparts.

I wouldn’t be too hard on them. Zora Duntov only had a few weeks to throw the car together before Sebring, and yet it was still very competitive (I believe it was leading the race before having to retire).
The Corvette SS race car's body was made of Magnesium. This material was an awful lot lighter then fibreglass or even Aluminium. Problem was Magnesium conducts heat, and it wasn’t long before the driver’s compartment became as hot as a toaster oven. The car was retired once it became apparent that the driver would be fried if it kept going.

The only way I'd allow them to commemorate the SS is if they made a magnesium Corvette body that didn't fry the driver. Other than that, I just don't see the point.
