View Full Version : Favorite War Movie

Well, with the whole situation in Iraq, I have thought a lot about war. And being the great American I am, whenever I hear the word "war" i immediately think of John Belushi flying over the Grand Canyon in "1941", smoking a cigar and breaking beer bottles on his airplane. 1941 is definately my favorite war movie of all time. Post your favorites here.

As mystified as planes make me, helicopters are a real mystery.... I mean this thing whirls around and it makes you fly? I don't think I would trust it...

Other things that mystify me:
Tapes- I mean I know HOW they work, but it still seems a mystery

LMAO....i think the same minia;)
here is a list of my mysteries
1) gravity - how does the centripital force of the revolving earth, combined with the centripital force of the earth revoling around the sun, NOT throw us into space?
2) the sun - if the sun is not a solid state of matter, but is a burning ball of gas....how the hell does it not quickly burn out, with out oxygen to feed the flame?
3) muscle memory - can we verbally explain to someo one how to open/close their hand?
4) records - they are more of a mystery than a casset tape...
5) the elevator "close door" button - why the hell is it there? it doesn't work no matter how hard you pound it...

KinkyKlown
03-26-2003, 11:45 PM
4) records - they are more of a mystery than a casset tape...
I think the same way everytime I play a record. I was even more confused when I watched them being made, but as confusing as they are, I love the way records smell.

On the topic of war movies, did anyone see the band of brothers series? I missed it when it came out on HBO, and was wondering if it was worth the rent.

Another good Patrick Swayze war movie is Red Dawn. Its about WWIII where NATO is gone, countries are falling to communism left and right, and the USSR and Cuba invade us. So patrick swayze and charlie sheen and some other guys wage guerilla warfare in their town. Its pretty entertaining.

#1 Band of Brothers. No warm film/series even comes close to touching this. It's all a true story, based on real people, and the people who actually fought in the war were there to oversee things and make sure it looked as realistic as possible. The battle scenes were really intense, more realistic than any movie ever made. It's 10 hours long, and I've watched it three times. Lt Spiers rules! :D

#2 Tae Guk Gi. A Korean film made about the Korean war. Probably the bloodiest of all war movies ever made. The story is fantastic. What a great movie.

#3 El Alamein. An Italian movie about the Italian side in WWII. All I can say this movie is a masterpiece.

#4 Saving Private Ryan. Revolutionized battle scenes by actually having fake blood splatter on the camera screen to make you feel like you are there. The battles were very realistic. When I first saw this movie, the opening part was riveting and sad. The last battle really got my adrenaline flowing. It was scary hearing the rumbling of the approaching enemy tanks. It made you feel like you were there, outnumbered and heavily outgunned.

#5 Full Metal Jacket. It's a classic. I thought the part at the end with the girl being the sniper was a very cheesy way to end the movie. The slow motion scenes where the black guy got shot up was lame too. But the rest of the movie was fantastic.

#6 The Thin Red Line. This could have been easily one of the greatest films ever made if Terrence Malick hadn't cut so many scenes out, or at least added them to the DVD version. This would have been a masterpiece, but instead a bunch of characters that you've grown attatched to suddenly aren't shown in the movie again and you dont hear anything about them. In the origional script, you find out everything, but he had to cut it out or else the movie would be way too long. He didn't add them to the DVD version, so he is a dumbfuck. It was still a good movie however.

I haven't seen Tora Tora Tora yet. Is this a foreign film, and who's in it? Thanks.

There should be more movies about WWI

In that case there should be a remake of the movie "All Quiet on the Western Front". The book is amazing, the film made in the 1930's is also incredibly good. The tv series remake that came out in the late 80's really sucked. If a good director like Spielberg was to make a movie out of this, it would be an instant Oscar.

My favorite is Platoon.

Underground (1995)

Nice :D Emir Kusurica is a genious. And Underground is one of the best, realistic war movies.

I still think the first 40 mins. of Full Metal Jacket are the best of any war movie out there.
