A simple one really...

I want to create a function on a website the same as if the navigation buttons were on one frame, but the content was on another. Except without using frames; they're a bit old fashioned.

This website's a good example:

http://www.mattdarey.com

(click the shop button)

This website still utilizes frames, except not the normal frames people think of when they think frames. In order to achieve what this website did, you would need to build a flash naviagtion bar, and in the actionscript of the flash, tell it to cache the navigation bar, so it doenst seem like it has to load again.

In all reality it is reloading again, just from your hard drive. Which you hard drive loads tremendously fast than any internet connection you have.

So to put it short, the answer is you must cache the navigation bar if possible, this is the only real way to avoid using any frames on the website and still make it look like it doesnt have to load the page everytime.

One way to help your users browse your site is modifying a few lines in your .htaccess file on your server. If you have access to this file, then this should help:

1. Open notepad and copy and paste the following line:

Code:
php_value output_handler ob_gzhandler

2. Go to save as and change the "save as type" drop down to All Files.

3. Name the file .htaccess and click Save.

4. Upload to your .htaccess file to your main webssite directory where your index file is stored.

Quote:
Not all browsers support HTTP compression, but ob_gzhandler() figures out if a browser can support HTTP compression. If the browser doesn't, the original file is displayed, no harm done.

Er... that's a tad more complicated than I was hoping for.

Check this page out (the links section). Similar effect, but less complex I hope.

Try a CSS layout, like the ones found here (http://lissaexplains.com/css3.shtml).

You might need to tweak it a bit, but it will work.

I think that beta35 gave you the exact solution. If you are going to do more advanced things regarding web design you're gonna have to get your hands dirty.

i gotta agree with the sofa king. It might help to start by just experimenting. If something goes wrong, backup and startover.
