Read up on snake feeding behavoirs. They suffocate their prey by constricting them or envenomating them (in the case of rear-fanged or advanced venomous snakes). It's a fairly quick and painless death and the prey falls unconscious in several seconds. They don't get digested alive in the snakes stomach.

Mice and rats are almost the only species that it is legally allowed to practice lab tests and the like on. I believe PETA has agreed that there is some neccessity for such tests to occur. Granted, I don't think they had this in mind. Either way scientists have to test on something...while personally I think human life trumps almost all animal life...Not withstanding rats and mice are the only legal speciies of lab test animals.

Also, he was probably eating a feeder mouse which could be unhealthy for one reason or another. Otherwise it wouldn't be a feeder. . .

EDIT: Also, my roommate now and in college majored in Nuero-Bio. If and when they tested on rats they killed them quickly and with sympathy. I believe they are issued some sort of short directly to the spinal cord and are dead instantly. Possibly, phenol or pentol barbitol?

I seriously hope she gives that snake away. If she actually said that then she doesn't know shit. The bones get digested partially, so I wouldn't see why it would hurt for a snake to shit it out.

I feed some of my larger snakes adult rabbits for Christ's sake. They don't yell in pain when they take a shit.

If they starved the mouse, for example, it would be hard to know if it died of the treatments, or of the starvation. So all external potentially harmful elements need to be removed during testing.
