This was just one of many pieces of cheap crap available by mail order (no internet!) back in the 1970s. Yeah, I know, your parents probably weren't even married back then, the stone age, right? Anyway, I remember this and many other commercials like it from my childhood. K-Tel records, anyone?

I think my dad has one of those sitting unopened on a shelf somewhere in his office...pretty ridiculous commercial.

It doesn't broadcast to every radio, just those in VERY close proximity, and if I remember correctly, you had to tune the radio to a dead space on the dial, you couldn't just break in over a song or something. (I may be wrong about that though, it HAS been a long time, lol)

It sends out a low-frequency FM radiowave. It can only be heard by radios within like 10 feet. Only works on dead channels. I ahve the same thing so I can listen to my mp3 player in my car.

I thought everyone had seen this commericial. Damn I'm getting old. :(
Ron Poppeil is one clever dude, he invented the infomercial. Still selling shit today that your grandma is buying.

You can still buy these things, millions of companies make them now. They sound like crap.

It was referenced in an episode of "The Simpsons" (http://www.snpp.com/episodes/8F11.html) in 1992, if that is any more contemporary for you young snappers of whipper.

They don't make Mr Microphone anymore, but there are billions of knockoffs. You can probably find one at Toys R Us or maybe even the toy section at the dollar store.
Here's one (http://www.lillianvernon.com/catalog/product_display.jsp?pdId=6170) for $4.

Fisher Price and other toy companies make microphones for kids that have built in speakers that sound better.
