Some versions are free, google for 'em, they're all over the place.

You can use it to run a game server but that's not going to be the problem, the problem is going to be twofold. Bandwidth limitations and a dynamic IP address. So technically you can but, it won't be very good.

As far as bandwidth goes, for running a game server I would make sure your connection can support at least 256kbps upload (from you -> internet). 384 or 512 would be even better.

Use a dynamic DNS service such as no-ip.com to get a domain name to route to your server. The way it works is you sign up for the service (usually free) and you can set up a subdomain under their domain name (<something>.no-ip.com, etc.) Then you install a client app on your server/computer that communicates with the service and tells it what your current IP address is. That way your subdomain will always point to your computer, even if your IP address changes.

Most versions of Linux are free. In fact, if you're paying for Linux, you're getting ripped off. As far as which Linux distro to get, I'd suggest Knoppix or Ubuntu, but more so the former. Just Google one or the other, it's not hard to find. You'll just need a program to burn cd images, such as Alcohol 120%, as it will give you an .iso file if you download it, or you could order yourself some. I don't know if Knoppix is free to order, but Ubuntu definately is.

As far as servers, well, sorry, I can't help you there.
