Yeah, dragonforce are fantastic. I don't have any albums, but what I've got from the site you linked to is impressive enough. Super-speedy drums/air guitar.

They remind me of a J-rock band I know called X-Japan, but with a much better lead singer.

Well Stratovarius is more creative and innovative than Dragonforce. But the melodies and riffs that Dragonforce makes are simply unsurpassed. They really stick to the same style all the time though.

One thing is for sure though Sonata Arctica > Stratovarius.

Metal music has some of the most amazing melodies I've ever heard. Its not just noise. Many metal bands don't even use screaming vocals. And so what if they do, now those gay emo and punk bands are starting to use them. Metal screams are much better though. Mikael Akerfeldt owns the world.

Everyone complains about metal elitists (elitist towards non metal), but in reality we seem to have more people who are ignorant towards metal.

Metal is a pillar of music. There is incredible talent involved in every sector, from songwriting, technicality, originality etc... What makes you think all metal involves screaming?

And also, how can you talk about dorks with long hair playing guitar really fast, when doom metal exists. One of the primary characteristics of doom metal is that it is slow.

I'll let it slide, since you like RHCP and RATM, but please don't use stereotypes for metal.


Anyway, Dragonforce is a pretty awesome band - one of my favourite power metal bands. I can see the resemblance they have to computer game music (I picked that up the first time I heard them). But they have some insane talent there.

There are also many power metal bands like Rawhead Rexx, Persuader, and Hibria that are a bit darker and don't have as cheesy lyrics.

True, but it still can't be denied that the majority of power metal is pure lyrical cheese.

Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favourite genres, mainly because of the musicianship it involves and the melodies.

And yeah, Dragonforce are absolutely awesome, one of my favourite bands at the moment. I saw them live a few weeks ago, and it is definitely one of the best gigs I have been to. My only criticism would be that a lot of their songs do sound very similar, they don't stray much from the tried and tested formula.

And to those saying it sounds like computer game music, I don't know if you are aware but this isn't surprising considering that some songs actually have deliberate computer game sound effects inserted into them. Through The Fire And Flames has Pac Man sound effects in, Cry For Eternity has the cry of the Windfish, stuff like that.

I am one of the like 3 people in my school who have even heard of DragonForce. I used to listen to Sonic Firestorm at least once a day : /. Most people here listen to rap/emo/country.

DF used to be my favorite band but for now it is probably Sonata Arctica. I love when they do guitar/keyboard solos back to back.

No worries - but metal is quite vast. You'll probably find some that you like.

I wouldn't say Dragonforce is meant to be a joke band, but they do have some corny "joke" things (computer sounds made on guitar, corny lyrics/vocals etc). The band members do admit that they don't take themselves seriously though - they're out there to have fun as well.

Also, I don't understand all this hate I'm reading in this thread towards power metal vocals. To me, the vocals are one of the best parts of power metal, despite the cheesy lyrics.

Incidentally, I think there is a fine line to tread between tongue in cheek cheesiness (the Dragonforce kind), and actual cheesiness. Rhapsody are a prime example of a band that goes too far with their cheesiness. I mean, song titles like "Forest of Unicorns", "The Village of Dwarves" and "Dargor, Shadowlord Of The Black Mountain"? WTF?

Blind Guardian are kind of dangerously treading on that line - some of their songs are really tacky, but to me they remain an good band because (and this brings us full circle to the start of this post) I love Hansi Kursch's voice sooo much. A lot of people don't seem to like it though, which i always find strange.....

Power metal vocals can annoy me. In power metal, there are awesome singers like Matt Barlow (Iced Earth) and Hansi Kursch. Then there are singers like ZP Theart and James La Brie (I know, he's not power metal) who can really be annoying, despite their talent. But I did think James did a great job in Ayreon.
