I used to play jazz all the time on my Bari and Tenor Saxophone. It's really, really, really fun. We are constantly learning new funk, blues, and jazz scales. I encourage any musician to get into this.

I listen to:
Charles Mingus
Thelonious Monk
Herbie Hancock
John Patitucci
Jaco Pastorius and Weather Report
Eddie Lang
John Coltrane
Victor Wooten
I also listen to jazz influenced or jazz metal/rock/fusion stuff; i.e. Atheist, Jamiroquai and Cherry Poppin' Daddies.
I'm keen to hear Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and more Victor Wooten.
When you say you want to hear more modern jazz, does it matter if it isn't pure jazz - say if it's a combination of several genres?

As long as it's well done I don't mind. Pure jazz would be ideal....I get enough free form stuff from MMW.

Gong
Soft Machine
Return To Forever
and Mahavishnu Orchestra are some other good groups.
Jazz Fusion ok?
Some of my favorites:
Stanley Clarke
Chick Corea
Matt Savage (if you don't know who this is, you have no idea how much you're missing out on)
Coltrane
Charlie Parker
Miles Davis
Duke Ellington
Herbie Hancock
and as I said earlier, JACO PASTORIUS.

Yes, I love jazz. At the moment, my favorite Jazz artist is guitarist Ben Monder. His music is very unique, and anyone who's into music should get his CD Oceana.
Some more of my favorite Jazz musicians are, of course, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Maria Schneider Orchestra, Eric Dolphy, The Weather Report, Django, Scott Henderson, and Allan Holdsworth, who I am seeing on May 13th.

Yeah, Atheist's vocals are nothing to write home about, but they don't bother me either.
However, I think Atheist is much more jazzy than Tool. I'm not an expert on Tool, but as far as I can see and from what I've heard, the only jazz in Tool comes from Danny Carey.
I haven't got Thrust - it sounds good.

Really? I've listened to some Tool (but as you know, not a whole lot), and I never picked up on any jazz influence. But hey, I'm probably wrong, you'd know better then I would when it comes to Tool:dunce:
As for the Herbie Hancock....well, he's the man. I haven't heard anything of his that I didn't like. And he was a regular on Jaco's albums, so he's cool in my book.

You're right about Tool, Danny Carey brings in his jazz to the group. Some of the time signatures they use are jazz influenced but it's very, very subtle.

Headhunters by Herbie Hancock
Speak No Evil by Wayne Shorter
Some Jaco Pastorius

Jaco Pastorius (self-titled solo album)
Word of Mouth
Heavy Weather (by Weather Report)
8:30 (live album by Weather Report)
Bright Size Life (Pat Metheny's first album, amazing guitar playing and Jaco is on every track...including some badass bass solos)

How did this thread go 3 pages without anyone mentioning Bill Evans? If anyone's looking for a jazz album to buy/download, make sure it's Bill Evans' 'Sunday At The Village Vanguard.' It's the most beautiful, intimate live jazz experience ever. Not only is the music very personal and moving, but the tingling of wine glasses and muffled conversation in the background make you feel like you're really at the club watching the trio. An all time classic.
Other jazz favourites:
Miles Davis - Agharta
Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil
Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else
Tony Williams - Emergency
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers - Free For All
Larry Young - Unity

Sure. If you're only gonna get ONE Jaco album, get his self-titled one. It's one of the most important albums in the history of the electric bass, and besides that, it's just a killer jazz album. He does a brilliant version of Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee", his own uber-funk/soul tune called "Come On, Come Over", "Portrait of Tracy" is still considered one of the most important (and beautiful) songs ever written for a bass...there's not a single bad thing to say about the album. Every song kicks ass. Dig it.

Mike.. what's the best Weather Report album in your opinion?
As for Athiest's vocals sucking most of the time I'm the one bitching about metal vocals but sometimes they fit well.. some music just isn't right for some soulful singer to come in all soulfull and such. Sometimes its better for the singer just to scream their fuckin head off.. or occasionally for some evil ass demon sounding motherfucker to come on a track growling and shit.. just my $0.02.

Self-Titled 71' album... best Weather Report for sure.
Mike.. what's the best Weather Report album in your opinion?
Now you gotta understand, I'm a HUGE Jaco fan, so my opinion of Weather Report is extremely biased. The group released lots of good stuff without Jaco, I just prefer their stuff with him.
That being said, my favorite Weather Report album is either Heavy Weather, or Night Passage. Both are awesome, both have amazing music from the whole band, but I think Heavy Weather is more "accessible", or easy to listen to. Night Passage is awesome, but only a few tracks (Port of Entry, Night Passage, Rockin' in Rhythm) really caught my attention the first time I listened to it.
Also worth checking out (and when I say that, I mean they're fuckin great too), are Mr.Gone and Black Market.

Anyway, to get the thread back on track, could anyone upload any Jaco Pastorius albums apart from the self titled? I'm having a lot of trouble trying to get a hold of them? And the self titled was musicgasmically good.
Also, I'm after Eddie Lang (jazz guitarist) guitar tabs. From what I've heard of him, he's a pretty good guitarist who switched over from banjo (verification?). It doesn't seem like he's hugely popular, so I've had trouble getting some. And I'm not good at tabbing either.

I rarely listen to jazz, but I've determined that it's the best style of music out there. It seems like everyone that's extremely passionate about music is passionate about jazz. Plus, jazz is filled with originality that you really don't find many other places.
I listened to Larry Carlton last night, and my iTunes labeled it as jazz, but I would've said blues. Anyway, can someone here recommend some good jazz for me? I'm pretty open-minded about music.

Yeah it's a good video, but Jaco was so gone at that point in his life it's really depressing to watch it now. Check out any video of him from the 70's through the early 80's, it's like a whole different person.

God damn medical community hoggin' up all the pussy. Us jazzers should rebel against the doctors, it's well overdue.

Sadly, I've yet to meet a girl who gets down with jazz. Though when I do, probably gonna have to wife her.
Thats cos there arnt any. Ever been to a jazz club? Sausage fest my man. The only people who feel jazz are 30something's men. Who else digs a super locrian scale being played over a Bbaug7/G#? You can hear them saying shit like "no way did he just play a dimished scale over a G#minor!"

Check this out. Dave Brubeck playing Take Five with Carmen McRae singing...
http://media.putfile.com/Dave-Brubeck-Vocal-Encounters---18---Carmen-McRae---Take-Five
That's sweet.
Anyway, some of the regulars I listen to:
Charlie Parker - Check out his rendition of Gershwin's Summertime
Herbie Hancock (especially Headhunters [especially Chameleon])
Sonny Rollins - Tons of great stuff
Thelonius Monk
Count Basie
Stan Getz
Chet Baker - Amazing
Dave Brubeck quartet has gotta be my favorite though
And really, you can't go wring with some Duke Ellington, Coltrane, or Louis Armstrong

If I had to pick one classic that I haven't seen mentioned it would have to be Ornette Coleman's 'The Shape of Jazz to Come'.I beat you to it; end of first page.
Two unrelated mentions in a jazz thread does help indicate this album's dopeness, though.

Getz/Gilberto
I consider King Crimson jazz in many ways, so add 'Red' to above list...
