EDIT: Nevermind, A poll wont work because theres so many guitar players out there. Mine is Jhon Frusciante, with Tom Morello after him.

John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) is my favourite modern guitarist, and possibly my favourite guitarist ever.

Mikael Akerfeldt is also quite good. But I could go on listing heaps of good guitarists. I think I'll just put down John Frusciante as my favourite and leave it at that.

Good to see another Frusciante fan, I practically have a hero worship of him.

Yeah, I'm not sure why I like Frusciante so much. Some things are blatantly obvious like his skill for songwriting, emotion, tone, technicality and the normal things which make a good guitarist. And of course I admire Frusciante for the person who he is and his creativity.

But there's something which I can't quite pick that places him on a pedestal for me. Perhaps it's his style which is quite distinct. He has some interesting influences (not many guitarists are influenced by electronica like he is). Frusciante has real flair.

I think a good challenge for a guitarist is to write a song as simple, but as awesome as Murderers.

Anyway, I can't wait for the new RHCP album. Supposedly, Frusciante is going to play an even bigger role on this one.

RHCP and RATM are old bands hardly a contemporary debate

Tom Morello sucks. He's not even really good... lot of effects and alot of simple riffs. Solos are ok but nothing to get excited about. RATM rules though.

Nah Tom Morello is amazing, his effects are cool and his rifs are even cooler and his solos...well.., but yeah RATM do rock.

I used to think so until I heard countless of guitarists who I thought were better... technically... and just over all as song writers. That's just me though... I also thought Adam Jones was a "good" guitarist.

Your missing the entire point that Morello makes as a guitarist. Effects is what hes famous for, all the different noises and sounds he can make with his guitar. And who gives a shit about simple riffs? Just because Guerilla Radio is simplistic means it sucks? absolutely not...

No doubt there are better guitarists out there, but Tom Morello does not suck whatsoever, hes very innovational and unique.

Warren Haynes is pretty damn talented dude. I don't know of many guys who can go on stage by himself and put on a hell of a show.

Oh i know, Warren Haynes is amazing i didnt mean it in that sense, i meant it because this is for "modern guitarists" while Warren Haynes has been around for a hell of a long time playing with Grateful Dead, Allman Bros, Gov't Mule...

That's true, I just don't think a person should be eliminated from this thread for a long career. If the person is still currently playing, then I think they are fair game.

As for my favorite modern guitarists?

Trey Anastasio
Robert Randolph (fuck you guys, It's still a guitar!!! hahaha)
and my buddy Trey

Of course, borg 2 was just saying how RATM was an "old" band, and that Tom Morello wasnt a modern guitarist and I reminded him hes in audioslave. RATM is one of my favorite bands.
