Is there any real difference between them or is screamo just some dumbass emo way of saying metal??
Mount_Happy

I think metal is a little more broad than screamo... you dont need to always be shrieking your lyrics in metal, while in screamo its pretty much the reason the genre exists.
BIG difference. Screamo is like really bad heavy metal, but the singer is even worse then usual. Instead of the normal screams that metal should have, screamo singing is nothing but indesipherable shrieking. It's higher pitched, it's impossible to understand (even more so then real metal), and it basically gives me the same feeling as nails on a chalk board.
Screamo = gay
Metal = good.

for further examples of really bad screamo see Andrew W.k.
^Good example. Another one, although I KNOW this will be debated, is Lamb of God. The band itself is talented, they make great metal, but the singer is a prime example of screamo.
**I'm not bashing the band. Lamb of God is a good metal band, I just think their singer sucks.

Uhh, yeah..Andrew W.K isn't screamo. Modern screamo is more relative to bands like Underoath, and Senses Fail. They sing about love, and broken hearts and all that pussy emo shit. So:
is screamo just some dumbass emo way of saying metal??
No, It's the dumbass emo form of metal.
Similar to Metalcore, too.

The Haunted is mostly metalcore with Gothenburg overtones, although some people like to call them thrash or melodic-death, especially their earlier stuff; But the later stuff is most definitely metalcore.

Screamo: Thursday, The Used, Underoath, etc.
Metalcore: As I lay Dying, Darkest Hour, Killswitch Engage, Heaven Shall Burn, etc.

Well, most metalcore is aimed at scenesters.
But, I'd say for good metalcore check out Despised Icon, Ion Dissonance, Glass Casket or The End.
Avoid The Haunted.
And listen to Nehemah, a great french black metal band.

Well okay then. Not all screamo sucks. If they're only screaming for parts of the song (like The Used, and Story of the Year, and Finch) then it's okay. But if they're screaming for 90% of the song, like what I guess would be Metalcore, then that I can't stand.

wow some of you guys are way off. Metalcore, screamo, and most all metal genres are not determined by the style of vocals (in terms of growls, yells, screams, etc). It's not screamo because the guy 'screams' and it's not metalcore because of the percentage of screams vs. clean vocals. Pretty much all metal genres are determined by drum/riff styles, lyrical content, geographical regions in some cases, etc. That being said, Metalcore is the mixture of metal and hardcore. Basically, as BrainStew pointed out, bands like As I Lay Dying and Killswitch. And the only thing keeping these bands from being 'metal' are the breakdowns. So, for simpleminded folk, metalcore = metal with breakdowns. (oddly enough, that's why I don't count Darkest Hour as metalcore, they are just metal in my opinion, I don't care how they look ;)) And then there's screamo, which is just emo with a guy yelling. ie, Thursday, Underoath, etc. So it's really watered down music, not very heavy at all, and the lyrical content is bitching and moaning about girls and myspace. The only thing that takes it from emo to screamo is the vocal style. In that they scream instead of wail like dashboard ;)

So, basically, all you did was compare 2 bands, that are listed in 2 different categories. You did no reasearch as it appears to me. You just took your own knowledge on the subject (which is very wrong) and put it to use. And all you came to the only conclusion that you came to is the fact that they sound like shit?
I said that NEW underoath could be thrown into the categorie of screamo.
Screamo is a musical genre which evolved from emo, more specifically hardcore emo in the early 1990s. Characteristic of the genre are anguished screaming vocals and fast, harmonized guitars. Breakdowns in screamo songs are often slower and more melodic than in other genres, less of a "beatdown" and more an opportunity for introspection (and rest for the musicians). Other than that, it is fairly hard to classify (particularly since the rule about screaming vocals is bent fairly often). It is sometimes also mistakenly referred to as emo violence, which is closely related (although bands in both genres borrow ideas from each other). Lyrically, screamo topics are often times introspective, although it is not uncommon to see a screamo band with political lyrics. Most screamo songs use imagery and metaphors to communicate lost love or failed friendships.
Thats straight off of WIkipedia's site. Evergreen's breakdowns are much harder, and have more of a "beatdown" feel as the site put it. Underoath hasnt seen a breakdown for years. They use more singing than screaming. So, i still think you dont know what you are talking about.

Screamo = heavy emo with faggot screaming
Metalcore = metal + hardcore (although the term metalcore is being used more and more as an umbrella to describe any modern metal without falsetto singing..)
Metal = \m/
How can someone confuse screamo for metal or metalcore, or for that matter Lamb of fucking God for screamo? Metal screaming (especially death metal) has a burly, throaty roar to the vocals whereas screamo sounds like a 90-lb faggot screaming like Underoath. Call Lamb of God what you will, but they are not screamo, no way. You can call Randy's vocals monotonous and stupid but they are not fucking screamo. He sounds like a man, not a pre-pubescent boy.
Black metal has a high pitched scream to it but it sounds more demonic and less whiney than screamo.
Everyone needs to listen to MORE THRASH!
Yeah, fuck yeah. No ambiguous labels, just pure thrash fucking metal.

Dude, take this into point. I don't care what the "exact" definition or chartrization of a screamo band is. If they scream excessively and uncontroallbly and look like emos then I am going to call them screamo. Because they are doing exactly what the name implies...Screaming.
And to be perfectly honest, evergreen screams way more and way louder than underoath does so, it's really fucking weird how you tell me they're most defnietly not screamo.
