Just downloaded David Gilmours' new cd and although I only heard the first few songs, all I can say is wow. It is very much like classic Floyd (maybe the Meddle era). Definatly chill out stoner stuff like you know and love. Go to Amazon.com and search for On an Island. There is a short movie on the making of the album. Great stuff. Here's the Amazon review:

David Gilmour’s solo career hasn’t exactly been creatively restless; this is but the third album by the Pink Floyd guitarist, and first in 18 years. But that seemingly lackadaisical career ethos hasn’t prevented Gilmour from producing some of his finest work here, an album whose soaring, lyrical guitar lines will be familiar to Floyd fans, yet one also blessed by often surprising nuances and delicate musical textures. Gilmour’s Division Bell collaborator Polly Samson is credited with most of the writing, helping conjure a moody, texturally rich "island" that’s as much musical as it is personally and lyrically metaphorical. "Castellorizon," the impressionistic opening instrumental collage, presages much of what’s to come in subtle ways, with Gilmour’s emotionally-charged guitar lines climbing into realms usually staked out by contemporary Jeff Beck.
Gilmour’s choice of collaborators is equally compelling, from the evocative orchestrations of Polish classical modernist Zbigniew Preisner and expected contributions from Floyd (Richard Wright and proto-Pink mate Rado "Bob" Klose) to a host of guest turns that span both decades and styles: Georgie Fame, Phil Manzanera, Jools Holland, Caroline Dale and Robert Wyatt. The title track is graced by the stately harmonies of David Crosby and Graham Nash while the instrumental "Then I Close My Eyes" spins a hypnotic, bayou-meets-boho ethos where Dale’s gentle cello lines meet the melancholy cornet flourishes of Wyatt to challenge the very notions of genre itself. "This Heaven" finds Gilmour in unexpected R&B territory, weaving playful riffs with ‘60s London scenester Fame’s Hammond organ and finding its lyrical spirituality in simple, personal intimacy, a subtext that wafts through the upbeat airiness of "The Blue" to the spare "Smile," spinning a surprisingly romantic elegy that comes satisfyingly full circle on the closing "Where We Start." No man may be an island, but Gilmour has nonetheless crafted a rewarding artistic oasis on this, his finest and most gently personal album. -- Jerry McCulley

I'm planning on buying it next week. Pink Floyds the best... the solo stuff is pretty good too. Roger Waters is making two new rock albums for next year, looking forward to that.

I heard the single and thought it was fucking terrible, really lifeless and the melody sounded forced. Roger's 'Amused To Death' is the best Floyd solo record.

Amused To Death is awesome. I really like The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking too. Even if Gilmour's new album is terrible, I'm probably gonna buy it anyways because I'm a collector and I need it to complete the Floyd solo collection.

But there's so much other, superior music out there to collect...

They have a video up for it on the amazon page. Here's the link On an island (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E6UK5K/qid=1141450888/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-1582860-7878463?s=music&v=glance&n=5174)
It's near the top of the page. It includes an interview and shows some behind the scenes work.

I just got the album and I'm listening to it right now. I'd say about half and half. Some of the stuff is really bad, while some of the stuff is pretty good, not the best though... but it's alright.

It came out on Wednesday, David Gilmour's 60th birthday.

It sounds a lot like the 80's Floyd, which was iffy IMO (some good, some bad). I'm liking what I'm hearing, though. Sounds pretty solid; loved those long Gilmour solos.

David's B-day is March 6th, which is when the album is scheduled to be released in Europe. US stores don't get it until March 7th. I know because I'm involved in promoting it's release. I'm not sure how you got an early version...maybe your record store released it ahead of time by accident.

This album feels more like the early Floyd Circa Meddle and Obscured by Clouds. I think fans looking for The popular Floyd sound like the Wall and Dark Side of the Moon might be dissapointed. Davids cites this a very personal album he made for himself, and he calls it his best work to date. Time will tell, but I think it will not get any critical praise because of the very long Shadow that Pink Floyd has cast over it's members in regards to anything they do.

For those of you who missed getting tickets to his show, I am posting a new thread with info on how you can win tickets to see him in LA, including airfare. Here is the link:

As an Amendment to my previous comment about release dates, here is a blurb from David's website:

------------------------------------------------------------------
"If you're fortunate enough to live in Germany, Italy or the Republic of Ireland, you may already have your copy of On An Island, because it was released there today (March 3rd)......."

Ha Ha. Yep, I guess so. Went to the store yesturday to buy it.

I'm actually liking the album more today than I did yesturday... I'm not sure why. I like all the songs except the first one.

I love both those albums. Echoes is the best floyd song in my opinion.

The album is quite relaxing, it's far from a masterpiece, but it's not a piece of crap either. I was expecting something alot better, though...
