I just want to know what people thought about this competition and who they thought would win. I haven't seen them yet but I think the team from the Dominican Republic looks pretty good. Nobody know what to expect from the Cubans. I couldn't put all the teams in the poll but I put the ones that I thought might be good.

Jimothy51

The obvious choice is Team USA because they are the most balanced team, but I'm going to go out on a limb and pick Venezuela. Johann Santana, Freddy Garcia, and Carlos Zambrano are 3 of the best pitchers in the tournament. Bobby Abreu and Miguel Cabrera are a devastating 3-4 combo. Vizquel and Carlos Guillen are both quality players too.

Jason Bay - Rookie of the year 2 years ago
Jeff Francis
Eric Gangé - Major League record for most consecutive saves

I meant that I couldn't name anyone off the top of my head. I didn't look it up like you did. By the way, coming off an injury like that I doubt eric gagne will do SHIT for Canada. He only played like 15 games or something last year and hasnt seen REAL action in a while. Besides, hes a closer.....how many innings can he possibly pitch? And Jason Bay and Corey Koskie, Paul Quantrill, Justin Morneau, and Matt stairs are not very likely to lead Canada to victory.

The US, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Venezuela are the 4 with a legitimate shot to win it. Japan is a darkhorse, and Canada, Korea, and Puerto Rico won't make fools of themselves but don't have a chance to win either.

I think the US has the best team, but the Latin players probably have more nationalistic pride. I heard the Cuban league is in the middle of the season right now, so they won't have the rust the other players do.

You know, that's a great point. A lot of these players aren't in the peak shape that they would be in the middle of the season...I wonder how much of a detriment that will be to our team. I can see a lot of the players being somewhat cavalier towards it because "hey, we're the US, no one can beat us" only to barely win or even lose. I hope that doesn't happen though.

Anyone seen pitching probables? I want to know who I'm going to see pitching tommorow.

Does every thread have to turn into a US vs. Canada bitchfest? Bottom line Canada beat the US, but the US moves on. Now let's actually talk about baseball. I like the US over Japan today, although Koji Uehara is one of the best pitchers nobody has ever heard of. Japan hitters have very rarely seen a moving fastball, and Jake Peavy has a good one.

Then why did you post here? And just so you know, baseball moves at a faster pace than football.
But the American team reminds me of the 2004 Cubs, they really rely on hitting solo homers and having the pitching carry them just far enough.

Still haven't seen the highlights, what was the deal with the 8th inning run by Japan that was disallowed. Was it a bullshit call?

Was Japan robbed or not? Television replays did not seem to show Tsuyoshi Nishioka leaving third early when he tagged up in the eighth inning, but an umpire upheld an appeal by Team USA at a critical moment in yesterday World Baseball Classic game that left the Americans sighing with relief.
Nishioka's run would have given Japan a 4-3 lead and it initially appeared he was safe on a short fly to left. Plate umpire Bob Davidson - whose call it is to make, he said - ruled Nishioka left too soon.
