Need help buying an electric guitar.

I've decided recently that I want to learn to play electric guitar...problem is I don't know anything about buying them....what are good brands...what should i look for when buying, etc?Any help appreciated.

I would start at a pawn shop. No sence spending a ton of money on something that's going to sit in a corner.
