View Full Version : Why Iraq, and not N. Korea?

The leader of North Korea seems to be a larger threat than Saddam Hussein at this point. The North Koreans are only months away from multiple Nuclear Warheads, whereas we have no (publically confirmed) proof of any WMDs in Iraq.

If the WORLD clamors for the inspections to continue, and the US really does have 'bigger fish to fry' (North Korea), why not deal with North Korea FIRST?? unless of course by waiting for more allies to join in the 'war on iraq' bandwagon, you're afraid of getting a smaller piece of the oil pie?

Just a suggestion... I'm not sure if I even believe it myself. But the US's actions seem to support this possibility more than the cover of 'humanitarian liberation' they're operating under now.

i agree that bush has not made n. korea a big enough concern, but i think it is because the matter will be resolved peacefully. obviously since this has yet to happen, i have no idea how its gonna pan out....tick tock tick tock

Because north korea is not a threat. In 1992 Bill Clinton with the help of Carter made a deal with north korea and gave them money, food, and medicine as long as they would not continue their nuclear program. Now they through the IAEA inpectors out and have started it again. They broke the contract. There is no reason for us to make another deal with them and be held for ransom. North Korea may be crazy, but they know that at the worse they could destroy an east coast city, and in return we can completely destroy their entire country ultimately.

There is no reason for US to deal with north korea. If anything, it is China, Japan, an South Korea's problem.

China and North Korea have a mutual defense agreement. This is why the Bush Administration does not consider North Korea's actions a crisis.

this is very true....but china is an allie of n.korea, and would be there to back them up.

China is an ally to the USA too. Frankly, they would probably backstab north korea before defend them agains the USA, even if purely for economic reasons and the fact that a war between the two of us would be devastating for the world.

if china were to side with n.korea, that would certainly be devastating to the world.
interesting tid bit - n.korea has the 4th largest army and the 2nd largest special forces that are trained to fight behind enimy lines...

This is a transcript of a speech given by the former Secretary of Defense, William Perry, at the Brookings Institute. You may find it interesting.

Yeah... they have a huge army, but its a small area very densely populated. I dont think we would use ground troops other than the 40kish we have there already. Most likely would bomb.

chris_78660

agreed, but we could kiss that 40,000 ground troops there good bye. i honestly don't think that n.korea will end up going to war with us...

They wont. They are just trying to ransom us for food like they did with clinton. If they actually tried something they unfortunately (because like iraq, the people only get propaganda) would be turned to glass before we would waste 1000s of casulties.

There is also a theory that once the NK troops go to SK and realise they have been lied to their whole life (Kim Chong-il tells the people that SK is in ruin and far worse off than NK) and see just how advanced SK is, they will defect en masse... but who knows.

there is such a fragile balance in that region.
if n.korea was really going to do something, they would do it now, while we are concentrating on iraq...

ok, they may not do anything directly against the US, like bomb DC or something.... but the fact that the leader is almost as much a fuck as Saddam, and the fact that he actually ADMITS to having weapons I think is alarming.

If we're launching a war now under the flag of 'human rights' in Iraq, or 'helping out a nation in need'. Why are we not launching a Pre-emptive stirke against N. Korea before we launch a pre-emptive strike on Iraq? N. Korea poses a much more immediate threat than Iraq.

Unless of course you actually believe that Iraq has the capabilities to actually threaten us at home...

Because north korea isnt a threat to us. They have no weapons that can reach us, and a terrorist cant smuggle a nuke to the US. Our spy sattelites can see the radiation of a nuke, and theirs would not be sophisticated enough to be very small. Also, they would likely be intercepted by the coast guard or navy. We arent talking about a couple people going to mexico and jumping the rio grande with a backpack of saryn.

Of course they are admitting their nukes, theu admitted them in the past. They are trying to get appeased. Its called sabre rattling.

I guess what I am asking is: what makes you believe that Iraq has the capabilities to attack us at home? or at least enough capabilities to threaten us (and neighboring countries, or their own people) more than Iraq?

shade

Because Iraq is cozy with terrorists. An Iraqi, or terrorist funded by Iraq, can come to the United States, even just infected with Small Pox to cause large ruin. People in north korea are not allowed to leave. Kim wants to keep his weapons so he can try to use them as ransom. Saddam hates the United States and wants us destroyed. Therefore Saddam's weapons are a threat, and North Korea's are not.

Oh, and if Iraq were to strike out against Israel there wouldnt be any neighboring countries that would leap to its aid. If north korea strikes south korea, Japan will most definately do something, and depending on how NK goes about its actions, China may join in. South Korea is somewhat protected by its neighbors.

And, while kim is an authoritarian-socialist dictator, he has not attacked his neighbors, only threatened... coincidentally when they are in bad economic times and need humanitarian things... because they spend most of their money on their economy.

N. Korea has no economic interest to the U.S. , that and their army is much stronger than Iraq's. I doubt china would ever attack us or support somebody against us at this point. They are too dependent on trade with us.

Economics is the real power we have over the rest of the world, and each day that power grows. Each time a foreigner eats a Big Mac for the first time or smokes a Marlboro. It is just like us adding a another weapon to our army.

Okay heres the thing. North Korea couldn't bomb washington D.C. because they don't have the ICBM capabalities that we have. For everyone ICBM stands for Intercontinental ballistic Missle. Anywho the furthest they could bomb is LA and hollywood, and to tell you guys what right now, i wouldn't mind having have the scum whiped from hollywood. maybe they'll make a human shield. No country except russia can bomb us. No country has the capabilities we do.

Is there any reason to believe China would not honor its mutual defense agreement with North Korea should the United States use military force against North Korea?

Personally, I think it would be a point of honor for them and they would feel they had no other choice.

let me say this:

china is silent about a lot of things, they hardly do anything with the united nations(always neutral), they are waiting until the timing is right to rise up and reclaim the title the land of the rising sun...they have plans to be the next superpower and their military is very strong...never trust a man with slanty eyes...china may depend on us for trade, but they got beef with us...let us not forget about russia also they too supply the north koreans. The last thing the US wants is a nuclear war because that is where N.K. will lead us...However if there were to be a war with North Korea expect them to receive help from possibly china. A war of this magnitude would be devastating...millions would die...and who comes out as the King?????

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...we have weapons that will make you piss your pants...Black Op Projects would be used extensively
