Metallica by a mile. Megadeth is a good band, but Metallica has created some legendary music.

Dave has some absolutely atrocious vocals too whereas James has the ability to growl and express genuine emotion (The Unforgiven - greatest song ever writte)

Megadeth. Dave growls like a fucking demon beneath brilliantly composed, 'out of control', furiously aggressive music, the release is just fucking amazing, the guitar playing is so emotional too. Metallica have a shit studio sound and though I like some songs they just don't compare, I mean Good Mourning/Black Friday, what a fucking song, starts off tragic and tender and eerie and turns into a murderous frenzy...

Megadeth, but thats maybe because I've listen to Metallica a bit too much. I prefer Marty's solos and Dave's vocals are pretty good IMO.

Metallica is probably the most overated band in the world. They have their good songs but some of their other shit is terrible to me. Same with Megadeth they have their good stuff like Peace Sells... but most of their other shit is stupid. As for the both of them must of their songs have the same sound, especially Megadeth.

I like Megadeth way more. Metallica had some good albums, Megadeth had some Great albums. I love Daves singing, I don't care much for James', you know the 'YEAHAH' gets on my nerves.

Of course people are going to say Megadeth songs sound the same. This is only because They have been doing Thrash/Power Metal songs, almost always. Metallica did 3 or 4 thrash albums, 4 rock albums, and the mess that we know as St. Anger.

And any guitar player would say that -deth has much more diverse guitar solos, seeing as they have gone through numerous lead guitarists and Hammet uses the same scale all the time.

Megadeth>>>Metallica

I definitely prefer Megadeth's guitarwork. Hetfield is a pretty good guitarist, but Hammett is mediocre. Whereas, all of Megadeth's guitarwork is great.

Megadeth is just better in general.

Agreed.

I like Metallica more, but at least Megadeth decided after a decade of shitty albums it was time to make a good one. Supposedly Metallica is recording with Rick Rubin now. If he can't save em no one can.

It's true that Metallicas new shit sucks, and that they are slightly overated. but you guys overate the fact that they are overated, and thus, underates them. Metallica has some PWNAGE songs like Fade to Black, One, Welcome Home(Sanitarium), Unforgiven, Ride the Lightning, Creeping Death, Seek n' Destroy, Fight fire with Fire, Eye of the beholder, Blackened, Battery, Orion... Notice that i only mentioned songs from their first 4 albums

That may be true, but the good song ratio between Megadeth and Metallica proves Megadeth supreme. Deth may have put out some bad stuff (Risk), but Metallica put out complete shit

I've never been a huge fan of Mustaine's vocals but I do think he has much better technical chops than the guys in Metallica. Some of those riffs on Peace Sells and Rust In Peace are mind blowing.

However, out of these two bands, nothing is ever going to top Master of Puppets.

Megadeth. It had Marty Friedman, who was influenced by and influenced Jason Becker, the greatest guitarist in the world. :p

Metallica has more of an artistic, progressive sound to their metal, and are much more talented in their guitars. Meanwhile while Megadeth may not have been as talented as Metallica, they had a more ballsy approach to their music which I like more. Also, as a band they aged much better than Metallica did (SHF>>>SA).

Bottom line is Kill 'em All is the bst Metallica album ever written (Metallica's talent + Megadeth's attitude)

Have you ever listened to 80s Metallica (the solo in One comes to mind)??? If you have, then you have your opinion and I have mine. Though Megadeth did have some awesome solos, In My Darkest Hour is probably their best.

Please... i own every single Metallica album (even that piece of shit St. Anger), and every Megadeth album likewise. So what about the solos in One? Whats so great about it... have you ever listened to the solos in Hangar 18? How about Ashes In Your Mouth? Victory? Wake Up Dead? Every single solo by either Marty or Dave destroys anything Kirk can put out, simply because Kirk does the same shit over and over every solo.

Also you said that Kill 'Em All is Metallica's best album, which i firmly agree with, but coincidently thats the album that Dave Mustaine had the most influence on, his influence even remained with Metallica through Master of Puppets (spider-chord usage).

Of course everyone has their opinion, i cant touch your opinion, but making educated statements helps back it up...

 One is basically the shittiest most overhyped solo in metal history. Anything by Marty COMPLETELY destroys it, including Symphony of Destruction, which I believe to be the worst of his work.

Edit: If you have any doubt that Marty doesn't kick Hammet's/Hetfield's asses watch this lame, but telling music video of Hangar 18. Marty > Hammet/Hetfield in every single aspect.

Yep, those four 20 note licks > Hammet wank.

No one said that. The guy said that Hammet is a better lead, and it seems that everyone disagrees with him. Although just for the fact that Marty is amazing I would say that gives Deth a massive lead on Metallica in this.

I think it is obvious that not only his solo work is better but that his musical knowledge is much greater also, with his use of the Hirojoshi and many other exotic scales, which greatly differs from Hammet's banal pentatonic wank.

I'd have to say the Megadeth beats Metallica in everything. Even though both suck now, TSHF is way better than SA. As for when they were both in their prime, Megadeth was much more talented. I don't see how anybody could say that Metallica had more skill. Megadeth could play riffs at mind blowing speeds AND sing at the same time. A couple examples are Take No Prisoners and Holy Wars. Wheras Metallica had retardedly slow and repetetive riffs. Now some smart-ass Metalli-fan is going to tell me that a riff is supposed to repeat. I don't care. That doesnt change the fact that they were boring as hell (For Whom The Bell Tolls).

Now, some might say that Kill 'Em All is one of Metallica's best albums. I would like to point out that it was mainly written by Dave Mustaine. And you can tell that after he leaves, noticable changes in Metallicas music occur.

In my opinion, Master of Puppets is way too fucking over-rated. I don't see why people could think that it is godly in anyway possible. If you think its the rhythm, listen to Five Magics by Megadeth. If you think its the vocals, bullshit, Hetfield can't sing for shit. If you think it's the solo, again, bullshit, Kirk can't shred for shit. And like many other people in this thread have stated, he plays the same bluesy scale over and over again.

Another thing that pisses me off is how people say Metallica is 'thrash'. Wtf. If Metallica could play any damn slower I'd have to fucking shoot myself.

Anyway if you didn't read any of that, Megadeth > Metallica times infinity.

The first part is a Guitar/Keyboard duel between Timo Tolkki and Jens Johansson respectively. Then they play some stuff together, then they both quit and Jorg Michael starts playing a drum solo. It's great :D

Yeah I don't know all about this riff and bass crap. I don't really care what kind of instruments people play or how artistic they are, as long as the music sounds good to me, I listen to it.

I would say I like Megadeth better from what I've heard. From Metallica I like "Fade To Black" and "The Unforgiven." From Megadeth, I like "Kill The King," especially the intro, and I like "Of Mice and Men" and "Angry Again."

well seein as im a huge metallica fan, i must say i love metallica way more than megadeth. Now there is truly no debate on technical skill. Megadeth has way better technical guitar solos. The guitarists totally have my respect in their amazing abilities. Hammet is merely decent. I mean he has his moment, and he has ok chops, but he shood not be seen as a guitar god at all. But as a band, i like metallica much better. It's more solid, and moving, and filled with just some awesome riffs that u can just fuckin feel. comparing vocalists and lryics, it is my opinion that hetfield is much better than mustaine. Hetfield is a great songwriter, and truly has a great voice. He is great because he is basically a rock singer, but he has a sort of low growl that brings heaviness to the music. I like his type of singing way better than say Pantera-ish singing, or Lamb of God (i still love both bands tho). Mustaine is an ok vocalist, and a petty good songwriter, but his voice gets a lil annoying.
