i'm really into metal music, but most of the 'good' bands have annoying vocals (growling, screaming, cookie-monster stuff etc).
what i'm looking for is a band that sings cleanly, something like iron maiden. i don't particularly like maiden's vocalist, but thats just an example of what i'm looking for.

thanks for any input.

Try Annihilator.

I'm listening to them right now, so they come to mind first. You might like some of their songs.

Good songs: Maximum Satan, Phoenix Rising, King Of The Kill, Alice In Hell, Stonewall.

EDIT: You should also check out Control Denied, Katatonia, Sentenced, Nocturnal Rites, Primal Fear, and pretty much any other power metal band.

Three words: Pain of Salvation

Yeah, I reckon you should go for prog metal, power metal and the odd heavy metal band. But some people find prog repulsive, so I'm not sure if you'll like it.

Pain of Salvation
Queensryche
Shadow Gallery
Ayreon
Dream Theater
Opeth - Damnation, since it has entirely clean vocals. However, Opeth was the band that actually made me appreciate growling, so you might want to try their other albums.

Judas Priest

A whole bunch of power metal including Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Stratovarius Dragonforce, Sonata Arctica, etc... (read Davemeistro's post)

There's plenty more as well...

Some Borknagar has clean vocals only, can't remember which albums though. And I listen to Katatonia when I want clean vocals, but the music is a little bit toned down as far as metal goes.

I'd advise you to just keep listeniong, I disliked 'growling' type vocals at first but they've grown on me, it's an expressive tool that enhances the music.

Blind Guardian
DragonForce
Gamma Ray
Dream Theater
Jag Panzer
Demons and Wizards
Helloween
Nevermore
Iron Angel
Vicious Rumors
Tank
Symphony X

Those bands all have clean vocals and are quite good!

Katatonia. They're just about my favorite clean singing metal band. Their new album (The Great Cold Distance) is pretty phenominal if I must say so myself. I don't believe it's release in the US yet, but shouldn't be too hard to get ahold of. Worst comes to worst...throw me a PM ;)

You may also like Porcupine Tree...not metal persay, but very good IMO.

DIO!!!

Also try hair metal. Being commercially friendly, it ususally has clear vocals, though not usually the most talented.

DIO!!!
Absolutely - you can't go wrong with Dio in any form.

If you're looking for similar to Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) then try John Deverill era Tygers of Pan Tang, Saxon & Overkill.

Yes, indeed. Dio has one hell of a voice and a lot of power considering his size.

Also, Overkill is some great thrash metal.

Overkill always seem to get overlooked in the thrash area somehow... don't know why though, they kick arse live.

Dio is probably my favourite singer. I prefer his stuff with Rainbow, but I can say that I like pretty much everything he's ever done.

Overkill Overlooked?

Not really. They are easily one of the most recognizable thrash bands out there. Anyone that has heard thrash has heard Overkill.

Thrash bands that are overlooked are stuff like Mekong Delta, Bifrost, Hypnosia, Carnivore etc, etc.

slipknot, mostly clean with some screaming, but it's not growling, it's probably the best screaming i've heard in metal. you can actually understand what he's saying, unlike trivium/killswitch engage, cannibal corpse, etc.

I suppose they're more overlooked than the big bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax etc...

But, I agree. They aren't overlooked in thrash circles.
