It is a plug in for your media player (I use iTunes) that transmits what you listen to to the web site, it then organizes it like you can see on my page. You can have friends, chat with people and other stuff. It also lets you plug it into your webpage or myspace or something so people can see what you are listening to. I Like Me, it doesn't keep track of mp3's that aren't tagged. A lot of mp3's you download aren't tagged and depending which program you use to rip a disc they won't be tagged either. I use iTunes to rip my CDs and they show up in my last.fm profile urry time.

And it does take a long time for your charts to update too. I can't imagine it would be to hard for them to make it up to the minute updates but whatever

To be blunt, that's probably because you appear to be pretty elitist and closed to music outside of classic rock; I think to appreciate something such as LastFm you have to be open to all sorts of music and willing to invest the necessary effort of getting into new stuff - genres are just labels, fuck pigeonholing, it's all art.

There's loads of bands/artists that are similar or related to those you've listed but not carbon copies, and if you're expecting more of the same you're always gonna be disappointed, plus if you're always listening to and searching for the same style you're bound to become bored. Most of my favourite music I didn't like on first listen, but I'm perennially grateful I kept listening.

If you like Rage Against The Machine, for instance, I'd recommend RUN DMC, Public Enemy (particularly 'She Watch Channel Zero') and N.W.A., and then that's a whole other avenue of music (rap) opened up for exploration. If you like Pink Floyd, there's Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue album, which Rick Wright based 'The Great Gig In The Sky' on, and that's a starter for jazz. For Hendrix there's Funkadelic's 'Maggot Brain', and then you're onto funk...

PS: I'm not trying to be arrogant, I just think people miss out through misconcepton; if, however, anyone wishes to interpret it as arrogance they're welcome to step to me on a personal level and get shot, stabbed or knuckled down, one out of the three, motherfuckers.

I don't know how much I'm pigeonholing(I might have to conceed to the elitist part thought, as I'm picky as fuck when it comes to almost any art). Most of the music I've happened to find that I liked has been older album orientated rock, but I think that has more to do with the state of the music industry back then, and the different type of music needed to be successful in an album band vs a singles band.

It's not like I don't check out other genres. For instance, I have songs from every artist you listed on my playlist(thanks for posting them though, I'll look into them further).I also make sure to give a song multiple listends if I catch even one thing about it that strikes me as good. I just have a harder time searching through them, because unlike in classic rock, the qualities that I like best are rarely expressed in the most popular artists from most other genres. And while I'll find quite a few songs within them that I like, it is rare that I'll find artists that consistantly pump out song after song that I enjoy.

I think the irony is I can instinctively pigeonhole folks as ignorant, largely due to coming across so many 'rap is crap lol' classic rock teens. Most of the bands I got into after Pink Floyd were prog rock bands recommended to me that I soon tired of, so I see what you mean with LastFM's recommendations being too similar.

However, I've found that the qualities you refer to, and that I once searched for, have become as one, I appreciate tender music as much as monstrous, edgy as much as mellow, surreal as much as vivid blah blah blah, and appreciate it because it's these things; I think that's the best feeling in art, to see that things can be beautiful in many ways, and be open to all of them - this said, ever read Plato's Republic?

Can't say I have. It's been mentioned enough in school textbooks and things I've read online for me to know what it is roughly about, but any connection between it and the discussion we've been having has eluded me so far.You're going to have to fill me in on this one.

Well Plato mentions sight lovers and philosophers, and he says that they will taste every branch of knowledge and love it equally, they love beautiful things, and they love them for different reasons, he uses the bizarre metaphor of a paedophile that will view strong boys as 'spirited' but timid as 'delicate', ignorant as 'endearing' and intelligent as 'wise', but the philosopher sees the true form of beauty, has an understanding of what 'beauty' means, as 'square' is a concept that can never translate precisely into the real world (squared objects are squared objects, they are never perfect representations of the concept of 'square'). Anyway, it reminded me of this thing about music and how the art lover will taste every branch. You asked me to elaborate, so I did. :ohnoes: :)

Interesting stuff( if a little stereotypically greek in his choice of an example :lol: ). Personally, I'm usually more interested in the final product,than the original or creative ideas that went into it. I can appreciate the creative beauty of a peice of music on some level, but I don't get the same type of enjoyment out of it that I get out of it's overall sound and composition. I suppose I'm not a true art lover using those terms, but I've always thought of music as more of a science anyhow. I'm not going to reuse platos metaphor because any way I try to it sounds, very, very wrong, but I can apreciate the mind of a stong minded intelligent person more than I can appreciate a timid ignorant one.

I guess that's why I'm such a fan of early blues rock. They took what was out there, and condensed it all together to create something that combined the best of it all, with great instrumentation. Not that I think they are the end all greats of music- I'm eagerly anticipating the day when someone can do to the music of bands like Cream, The Experience and Zeppelin what they did with the blues.

They've just recently changed things around. Try doing it again, because now there's a Clear Listening Data button, which will "erase all listening data from your profile". I'm assuming that'll do the trick.

Try doing it again. As I said earlier, they changed around the site, and now that button says it will "erase all listening data from your profile". That's all that I know you can do. If you're really adament about it, you could just delete your account altogether and make a new one. The button for that is just below the button to clear your listening data.
