can GTA (the game) make a great movie?

That's a comedy about kids stealing cars.

Grand Theft Auto could make a totally awesome movie. But it won't ever do that, because filmmakers never really get why a game they're adapting is good.

GTA could be a gritty crime story where the main character is an unsympathetic criminal who gets hauled in by various characters to accomplish everything from killing police officers to taking out crime bosses, planting car bombs, blah blah blah.

The look of the film would be dark, with only a slight hint of cartoony, almost comic book feel. Of course, the main draw of the movie would be great car chase sequences, which like the ones in Ronin or the one in the French Connection should focus less on flashy stunts and more on suspense and drama. In fact, all great chase scenes do that anyway.

Oh, and one last thing. R R JUST BARELY AN R. Sex, drugs, violence; everything should come as extremely as it has to, but at the same time, nothing should be toned down for the public eye's sake. This can be one of the best crime/action thrillers ever made.



Most likely, we'd get something along the lines of "Vin Diesel is an undercover cop, he steals shit and lets out stupid one-liners during major cool action sequences with no plot. Oh, and cars. LOTS!"

So true. If the damn film producers would just sit down and play the games for a little bit, get into the storyline a little, it would help.

Personally, I happen to think the GTA series is rather overrated, but I've seen enough of the games to know that there is potential for some good things, however, movies based on video games generally suck so I definitely do not think a movie based on GTA would be worth even the cost of a Blockbuster rental.

Make Rockstar direct the movie. They'll do the game justice, since it's their game. They just need to form a movie production section to the company...

And for God sakes, no "The Rock" or Vin Diesel, or any other action hero fag. Get somebody who isn't as well known, or maybe a newbie all together. I find movies that rely on the fame of the star to be down right shit half the time. Okay more than half.

I'd say Timesplitters (because the game fucking rocks), however, the storyline is weak, and most of the fun is meaningless challenges, online play, and map making.

Video game movies have never done well in the theaters. The only one that even comes close to entertaining was Final Fantasy: Advent Children. I'd rather see a Max Payne movie before any GTA or Halo movie.

Speaking of games to movies, I think Splinter Cell could be a really really good movie. Then again, if it is made, it could turn out to be an absolute piece of shit. If it was done in the style of the game, a stealth thriller with lots of suspense and slitting throats in the dark it could be amazing. But if it got turned into another James Bond or Vin Diesel movie (not that there is anything wrong with those particular movies) with big gun fights and explosions it would be crap. Even though it has the potential to turn into something awful I think Splinter Cell should be the next video game movie.
