The nobles and aristocrats wanted to coddle their French occupiers, so they learned their language and gave up English. The common, or vulgar people, retained English of course. Words like cunt, cock, shit, fuck, all good old anglo-saxon words, and totally acceptable until the French came and made it a class issue. Another good example is cow/beef. Cow is the Anglo word, because the commoners took care of the living creature. But the aristocrats actually consumed the meat, so it was given the French label Beef.
