View Full Version : What are your guilty music pleasures? Bands you're embarrassed to like...

I know we've had threads like these before, but it is ages since we had the last one.

So the question is simple. What are your guilty music pleasures? Do you like any bands which you're embarrassed to tell anyone about? Maybe a band which your friends would call you a fag for liking. Possibly a band which you like, no matter how much you hate that type/genre of music...

Try and keep it to guilty music pleasures :D.

For me, it's:
Placebo, Savage Garden, Robbie Williams, the Bee Gees and Blink 182 (I hate them with a passion, but I like Adam's Song). For the final one, I hate James Blunt, his annoying voice and all the radio play he gets, but I don't mind Wisemen - in fact I kinda like it :help:.

There are probably more, but some of you guys will most likely bring them up.

I wouldn't say that I'm embarrassed about any of the music I listen to, and besides, I'm far too old to give a shit what other people think about my musical tastes anymore (you get like that when you hit 35-ish) so here's some stuff I listen to that you probably wouldn't think I listen to, given my main musical interests.

Joe Jackson
The Jam
The Bangles
Crowded House
The Mission
The Smiths
Gary Numan
Eat Static
Future Sound of London
Hallucinogen/Shpongle
Classix Nouveaux
Japan
Style Council
Lalo Schifrin (as well as doing film scores, he also writes jazzy/bossa nova/big band type stuff - check out some of the re-released material that was originally released on the Verve record label back in the 50's and 60's)
Suzanne Vega
Vangelis
Jean Michele Jarre
The B 52's
Segovia

There are some records that I've bought that I'm ashamed to say that I did actually spend money on though:

Spitting Image - The Chicken Song
Black Lace - A few of their singles (probably only people in the UK have actually heard of them, but they used to make really bad holiday/party type singalonga songs)
The Firm - Star Trekkin (yeah, I thought it was funny).

Hayley Westenra - I have this DVD and I love it. (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/shows/westenra/essay1.html) If I never see her in concert, my life will not be complete.

Anna Nalick (really good looking, and a good singer too (http://search.music.yahoo.com/search/?m=video&p=Anna+Nalick&x=0&y=0))

Aly and AJ (Same as above, even better looking, but they're 15 and 17...) (http://search.music.yahoo.com/search/?m=video&p=Aly+and+AJ&x=0&y=0)

Tegan and Sara (the real lesbian duo, although they're not nearly as hot and they don't kiss)

Dimmu Borgir - Spiritual Black Dimensions

To be perfectly honest, I don't think Dimmu Borgir is a bad band. People only hate them because they're popular and they're somewhat related to black metal.

Hayley Westenra - I have this DVD and I love it. If I never see her in concert, my life will not be complete.

They're definitely better than most pop punk bands. I think they did a couple of Metallica covers, so that shows they at least have a bit of talent. And their albums are becoming less pop punk I think.

Crowded House

I didn't think anyone here would have heard of Crowded House. The vocals are quite good I think.

Crowded House are usually known for their single "Weather With You" (it sort of became their signature tune here in the UK and got played to death on the radio), but like most bands with only one or two well known songs, they're so much more than that one single. Props to you for knowing them.

As far as psychedelic stuff goes.... well, yeah, sort of I suppose. I listen to Hawkwind, Gong, Hidria Spacefolk, Ozric Tentacles, Tangerine Dream, Iron Butterfly, Byrds.... if you'd call those bands psychedelic.... I listen to anything that takes my fancy really. I try not to get into micro-genre specification, and generally don't name anything I listen to by genre (and who, exactly, decides what genre a particular band falls into anyway....... and who defines what a particular genre is??.... but that's a whole other disscussion) except really, really loosely - it's all just rock music, in one form or another, to me...
And big up yourself if you're into Gong and Hawkwind - I don't know anyone else here who's even heard of them, let alone actually heard any of their music. Got any favourite tracks or albums?

Crowded House is bigger over here because they're a NZ band.

Yeah, psychedelia is pretty hard to define. I haven't managed to obtain any Hawkwind albums, so I don't really know much about them apart from them being a bit of prog and a bit of psych.

It's quite strange really - I started getting into rare psychedelia before getting into the more popular ones like Iron Butterfly, the Byrds, Jefferson Airplane and Gong. So I haven't listened to that much of them. So far my fav songs are Radio Gnome Invisible, Arabesque Intro and Arabesque, the Organ Grinder and the Isle of Everywhere.

In the deep past, purple was a colour associated with royalty.

But nowadays purple is more associated with homosexuality (at least in this country it is :D).

I was talking to my mate about a Deep Purple concert, and some random guy in my class butted in and made fun of their name because of the whole purple=gay thing.

I'm gonna have to say Queen is my favorite band of all time. Freddie Mercury was one of the best entertainers of all time. I'm not at all ashamed of this, I just wanted to point it out to those who mentioned it earlier.

Anyway, back on topic. I'm not really ashamed of any music I listen to, but I've seen some of my likes looked down upon, such as Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, Shinedown, Sum 41 (some of their songs), hell I even like a couple Linkin Park songs. Say what you wish, its all music to me, and music plays a huge role in my life.

There's a lot more to be said for the Darkness than most would say. Once people get past the mainstreamness and some of the vocals, there's some decent guitarwork directly inspired by Brian May (Queen). And being inspired by Brian May is definitely a good thing.. It's good that there are bands like this which dig up the old glory days of classic rock - they're fairly reminiscent of Queen.

Lol I'm going to stop posting in this thread because I'm going to piss people off saying I'm embarassed to like Band X or Band Y. Btw, the answer to your question is in white text.

I've gone through a shred phase, and I am not as impressed with 'shredding riffs at 180BPM where you play 16 notes where 4 would have been overkill' as I used to be. I think most of it is pretty cool, I just prefer other stuff now. Bands like A7X and (insert popular metal band of the day) usually drive me a bit bonkers actually, so it's funny that I listen to DF.

Hawkwind are the band that Lemmy (Motorhead) started out with. He doesn't feature on all their albums, and he's rarely singing but just playing bass, but most notably he sings on Silver Machine, Hawkwinds biggest selling single to date, and a tune that's been used in advertising to sell everything from cars to phones etc. My favourite Hawkwind albums are "Warrior at the Edge of Time", "Quark, Strangeness & Charm" and "In Search of Space".

Isle of Everywhere is awesome - full of blissy/bubbly synths and dreamy guitars - it's a tune to listen to through the headphones and just relax to. The 'Radio Gnome Invisible' albums by Gong are probably their best work, with "Angels Egg" and "You" being the ultimate (and my favourite) Gong albums.

I'm not EMBARRASSED by anything I listen to. I listen to music for moods but if I had to pick off of my iPod, i'd say that I wouldn't be blasting these with the windows down lol

Sarah McLachlan
There's something about her music, I dunno... I don't mind it at all, it's great to sleep to if nothing else.

Enigma - Sadness
Funny thing about this song is that I wouldn't normally listen to it but in the heat of the moment or after a few drinks, this song has gotten me more play than Pendgrass or Vandross.

And lastly,
Def Leppard.
Yep, Def Leppard. I always liked Def Leppard, and mostly for one reason. Most of you guys are young but those of you that are in the age range of 25-35 know that females in that same age range have a thing for Def Leppard. Don't know what it is but you throw on some Def Leppard and it seems that girls want to take their clothes off lol. That and DL songs are frequently played at stripclubs.

I thought I was done but the last one would be
50 Cent - In Da Club
I know, I know... this guy sucks ass. And I agree with you... but that damn catchy beat. :( *cry*

To be honest, Justin Timberlake.

As fucked up as it sounds, I actually liked his songs after he broke up with that god awful boy band. He earned my respect.

Ahh, the JEW band!

There Jews!? I actually like Jimmy eat World. Never saw that one coming.

You'd be surprised at how many teenagers like CCR, even if they don't normally listen to classic rock. I suppose CCR had an impeccable ability to pump out great song after great song.

I'd have to say Michael McDonald. I love his music and his work, but he can be a bit too much sometimes. But lately, I've been listening to his Motown work that he's done, and he's done a good job with the songs. You can check out one of his Motown albums on Napsterlinks.

You can click on the link above, and enter your email address and login name to hear all the full length songs.

Nobody should be afraid to admit they like CCR, CCR was one of my favourite bands when i was younger, theyre awesome.

Im not embarassed about what i listen to, but i suppose the most "out there" band from my usual taste in music would be Green Day. I have Dookie and think its a great album, really fun to listen to. Im not too fond of the new make-up wearing, anti-governmental Green Day, but back in the day during Dookie, Nimrod, and Shenanigans, they were great.

I'm not ashamed of any of the music I listen to. Here's some music of potential lack of appeal on this forum, though. This is by album, not by band:

Bad Religion: Into the Unknown
Black Flag: Loose Nut
Black Flag: In My Head
Black Sabbath: Technical Ecstasy
Black Sabbath: Never Say Die!
Green Day: Warning
Guns & Roses: Appetite for Destruction
Guns & Roses: Use Your Illusion
Metallica: V
Metallica: Load & Reload (favorite Metallica album ever, in fact)
Metallica: S&M
Metallica: St. Anger after I've edited many of the songs with Amadeus II
Nirvana: Nevermind
NOFX: S&M Airlines
Puddle of Mudd: Come Clean (look past that stupid She Hates Me song, there's some powerful shit on here)
Rush: I
Slipknot: Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat (totally different from the Slipknot most people know, this was before Corey fronted the band)
Slipknot: Subliminal Verses

I guess that's it for now.

Fungus Amungus

Surprisingly enough it was still a rank piece of shit.

God damn, how can anyone like pop music? I may say that I "hate" certain genres, but I can still listen to them just would rather not. But pop... Fuck I honestly cannot tolerate listening to that shit no matter how hard I try. It's boring, repetitive, soulless, talentless, manufactured, bottled, marketed crap.

not if everyone around you think it's cool. living in a %56 black town of 30.000 like me makes you embarrassed to listen to anything other then Reggaeton or Rap. most of the time you got to roll up your windows when you get to a light there are so many scary looking ררררררs around you in pimped out Cadillacs. I'm afraid to get shot or carjacked by them.
