When I first saw the video, the last scene looked like they were imitating Green Day. Their performances on the American Idiot tour look just like that. Anthony is wearing clothes just like Billie Joe's, and Flea looks like Mike Dirnt. Also, there is a big symbol (in this case an asterisk instead of the heart grenade), plus everything is red & black.
Probably the Chilis are being themselves, but it does look a lot like the new Green Day.
And of course I mean no offense to RHCP. They only look like Green Day.

I didn't know because I wasn't aware that was Anthony's hairstyle these days. I thought it was an emo band too. My Chemical Romance was my first guess.
I'm quite sure that's Prince.

3 cannot be Prince. That doesn't make sense since it goes in chronological order. It is most likely the Jimi Hendrix Experience, which was a bad choice. The should have done something more practical like the Doors, the Who, or the Rolling Stones.

3 is most definitely Cream
Danzig are also in there as well
As well as Robert Smith from 'The Cure' , as played by John Frusciante

i think some of the time they are band members from different bands at the same time.
Buddy holly is in there somewhere i think
anyone know who that guitarist is in black and white?
My brother said he saw Eddie Van Halen in thier somewhere too. not sure on any of these but i'd be interested to know.
[EDIT]having watched it, i think the guy in the wierd admirals waistcoat might be from Dr Hook....Just Brainstorming here...
The band where he has the big white fur coat on...the guitarist looks like justin hawkins from the Darkness??? doesnt make any sense though
the next band with what looks like Antony as Prince has Flea as Bowie..and the drummer looks like a woman!...maybe it goes through the decades and each member has a different persona...

Are you sure that they ARE meant to be specific bands? I saw a program the other night on VH1 where they just said they were being different periods in musical history, so I think it is entirely possible that they aren't being specific bands.....

I don't think they are, but they certainly look like real bands. Here's what i've always thought:
(forgive me i don't remember the order and i can't seem to watch it)
Elvis (gives itself away)
The Beatles
The Clash or Sex Pistols (punk band with English flag behind)
Quiet Riot (big haired blond blokes)
Nirvana (sitting around on mats)
Chillis themselves (last scene, although i did think they were GreenDay until i saw the logo!)
Prince (big black hair and spaceship in the corner)
- sure of the others, i can't really remember them at the moment. Still, i think most are just eras rather than actual bands anyway

First. There is no way that The psychedelic era clip is Prince. Prince didn't start recording until '78 not '67. Even though I am hazy as to who the psychedilic era members are supposed to be, I promise you that they aren't Prince.
Alright, I will number them as well.
1. Elvis
2. The Beatles (as seen on Ed Sullivan)
3. This is most likely Cream, though Anthony looks like Hendrix, but I don't think they would have the singer be Hendrix. John actually most looks like John Lennon (Sgt. Peppers era). The band is also wearing clothes closely resembling The Monkees. The band was quoted saying it was San Francisco based so other possibilities could be members of the Grateful Dead, but could also be Quicksilver Messenger Service or Country Joe and the Fish (both San Francisco based), but don't look like it.
4. Parliament Funkadelic.
5. Flea is Bowie. Anthony is either Marc Bolan (T. Rex), or Boy George, though Boy George is more 80's than 70's Glam. The others look like members of T. Rex, and John may even be Marc Bolan if Anthony is not.
6. Definitely The Sex Pistols, NOT The Clash. It's even filmed the same way as footage of the Sex Pistols. The clothing and the look is of Johnny Rotten/Sid Vicious etc.
7. The Misfits.
8. This is more likely Def Leppard or Quiet Riot than Motley Crue. Chad's drum kit is definitely of Def Leppard proportions and Anthony and John stand together singing the same way that Leppard's singer and guitar player did. Anthony also puts the mike stand up in a very phallic way like the singer of Quiet Riot.
9. Nirvana. Shot just like their appearance on MTV Unplugged in 1993.
10. Themselves.
That's what I have. Psychedelia still has me confused, but it's is certainly above all else, not Prince.

You were pretty much spot on. I think there's some changes though:
No. 2 is Buddy Holly and the Crickets.
No. 3 is super contentious, but my folks saw it, and having seen the Beatles alot live and during the years etc, swear that it is late psycadelic Beatles.
5. I think Anthony is supposed to be Iggy Pop.

5. I think Anthony is supposed to be Iggy Pop.
No. 2: You make a good point and I think that the glasses they are wearing is a reference to Buddy Holly, but the arrangement they are in, and the overall look of the shot including the film stock, and even the guitars they are using is identical to the Beatles appearance on The Ed Sullivan show. Look up a picture of The Beatles on Ed Sullivan and you'll see it.
No. 3. Like I said about John Fusciante, I think he looks identical to John Lennon's later Beatle years, but Anthony doesn't look like any Beatles member, and the clothes they wear are more like those of Cream or Hendrix or Monkees. By the late 60's ('67-'69), when this is supposed to be taken from, The Beatles had stopped doing live shows altogether.
No. 5. Anthony isn't Iggy Pop. Iggy wore tight jeans or leather pants pretty much all the time, and no shirt. The top hat is a dead giveaway of either Marc Bolan or Boy George.

"The music video for "Dani California" premiered on MTV on April 4, 2006. Directed by Tony Kaye, acclaimed director of American History X, the video is a quasi-chronology of the evolution of rock music; the band performs the song on a stage, but in a variety of outfits representing important figures and movements in the history of rock music.
There has been much debate on the Internet, about which bands are portrayed. However, in the June 2006 issue of UK Classic Rock magazine, Flea was quoted as saying, "We mainly did eras, not actual people: rockabilly, British Invasion, psychedelia, funk, glam, punk, goth, hair metal, grunge, and ourselves being the sum of all those parts"."
Just thought that was sort of intresting, I think with most of them they were mixes of differant bands in the same era, although some groups have defined certain ones making their resemblance stronger, like the Beatles or Hendrix.

One of them (I think its 8) has gotta be Van Halen. You can clearly see Eddie Van Halens guitar is being played.

Naah, I think they just used that as a referance to that style and genre of rock, I doubt that any one costume is on a specific band.
