I was watching CNN a few hours ago, and there was a discussion about why the Iraqi war seemed to be less succesful than previously planned. Well it turns out US generals wanted nearly 8 divisions , but Rumsfeld, in all his wisdom, overruled them and gave them a bit more than three ! Can you imagine how much different this war would be if we had twice the amount of forces to work with?

He probably did it for political and domestic security reasons. Having 500k-700k troops would look really bad psychologically to the world. It would also detract from interests like the DMZ in korea (where we have 45-50k troops), our UN peace keeping duties, and our anti terrorism operations in countries like afghanistan.

Also.. we shouldnt put all of our eggs in one basket. If Saddam did use WMD while we had almost all of our forces in one place... that would be really really bad...

True, but dont forget that every troop in Iraq and Kuwait has been trained and equipped to handle WMD.

And, if the war were finished three days from now, it would easily blot out the amount of troops we have deployed to the region

Eh... not if you have 500,000 troops waiting for the word to attack in Kuwait. Iraq could shoot a ton of chemical weapons artillery in to camps and kill a large amount of people before there was reaction time enough to get in the suits. If you will recall, during the long time of troop gathering in Kuwait before the war started, they werent wearing their chem suits 24/7.

So many of us in one spot would be a very hard thing for saddam to resist.
