James Hetfield says that Metallica is hard at work on a new album and that this will be the first album that he has worked on sober.
"[It's] very different because there is a lot more awareness of what we are doing and sometimes over-thinking it. Now we are very present for it all and I'm not afraid to do or try anything musically."
He says the current project, which is being produced by Rick Rubin, is "going great because everyone is present and everyone is enjoying the process. The process is a lot easier. [Drummer] Lars [Ulrich] and I would butt heads daily. It would be going to war every day. You'd suit up in your armor before you go in the studio. Battling back and forth. Now it's helping each other do the best of their ability. It's all moving toward the same goal instead of pulling back."

I'll be so happy if Metallica manages to make a good album and go back to the days of old.
Meanwhile, I have plenty of thrash to occupy me.

Don't get your hopes up guys. I'm 110% sure this won't be an 80's thrash album like Puppets. Judging by all the talk about it, the best they are going to get is an album that sounds like the Black Album. Which of course is all a matter of opinion wether you like it or not.

Me too. That would be fucking awesome.
I can't wait to hear what sound they produce in this album. I was dissapointed by St. Anger how the drums "trash can" effect took over the whole album. But there are some decent tracks on there.

Why does everybody want them to play Master of Puppets over and over? Spectacular album, don't get me wrong, but...I thought the point was to make an album good in its own right, not make it fit into a specific genre.
They already supposedly tried to go back to the days of old with St. Anger. St. Anger was a disasterpiece, and yet everyone STILL wants them to go back to playing thrash. I'm not saying that the album can't/will not be heavy and probably the most metallic thing they've done in a while, but let's not boil everything down to what they did in '86.

Theres so many better metal bands out there than Metallica these days. For Metallica to make it back with something great theyd have to make an insanely epic album, with all the songs being something like they did for Ride The Lightning or Master of Puppets.
Anything less would suck, so who cares, in more important news: Megadeth is working on a new album, so at least that.

Metallica aren't really even metal anymore, as far as I'm concerned. With the Loads they turned into a hard rock band, and that's pretty much what they've been ever since, good or not. So as far as I'm concerned, we might as well be listing all the classical music artists nowadays that are 'better' than Metallica.

Aye aye captain! :) They're done recording the bass and drum tracks.
I'm a little bummed how Dave said it wasn't gonna be anything like their old stuff.
St. Anger II
My thoughts exactly.

WTF? I thought Megadeth had split up and Dave called it a day!...this is fucking wicked news. (and yes, i do live in a cave...with internet access).
Anyways, I think Metallica's album will be something completely different to thier previous stuff. St. Anger took a massive amount of criticism and they wont go down that road again but dont expect them to go back to mainstream metallica either. Im trying not to build my hopes up because i have been dissapointed so many times before, then again...it IS Metallica.
Can't wait till June 8th when Download 2006 (http://www.downloadfestival.co.uk/lineup/index.asp) kicks off!
After the last 3 albums they made, I'm not looking forward to this at all. I've pretty much given up on Metallica.
Megadeth however.....

Let's hope. Dave said it was gonna be different, but I honestly doubt he'd try and do another Risk...

He wouldnt, he knows better, after Risk he realized the fans wanted the thrash back, and the double bass, and the heavy riffs, not the more pop-like stuff. Dave said it was an experimental album, i doubt theyll go back to doing that.
But i trust Dave enough that he'll do the right thing for the fans, he cares about them most and wouldnt disappoint them by putting something shitty out like Metallica.

Yeah...
However he did say it wont be another RIP, so I'm just gonna hope it will be Countdown to Extinction-sounding but better; seeing as I didn't like TWNAH, CW, or TSHF as much as CTE...

I didn't dislike St. Anger. It's good music, it's just too different from the older Metallica.

St. Anger was a crime against humanity. There is no way to enjoy an album that horrible.

The world needs a hero is my favourite, then probably RIP or Criptic Writings...Countdown to Extinction is over rated in my opinion, it has a nice general sound but i dont think the song writing was quite up to thier normal standards.
Thats just me though
