1961 ford ranchero (http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/9877/ranch2vm.jpg)
here it is sitting in a back yard being used as a trash can.
yay! it isnt condemned to rust away afterall! (http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/2171/ran11ky.jpg)
i was surprised to look under it and find almost zero rust, its a 200 cu in i-6 with a 2 speed auto, and oddly enough it has a factory 3.50 locking rear end, i think it would be cool to put a 2.3 turbo with a t-5 in it.

I'd keep an I-6 in it and make a nice cruiser.
Start with a fully preped 250 bottom end, try to get a hold of a Aussie 250-2v head with the removable intake manifold, decent 2bbl either Motorcraft 2100 or Holley 2300, split headers and true dual exhaust, a modest cam, duraspark ignition and maybe some roller rockers. Keep the compression around 9:1 and run around all day on midgrade fuel getting 25-30mpg with your foot out of it. With plenty of power to get around without a problem. Back it up with an AOD and 3.90-ish gears and have a roadtrip vehicle.

It's another thing on my list that one day must be built.
If I can work out the paperwork with the state I will be dragging a 64.5 Mustang out of a garage where it has been since the 80's. It has a 200 or 170(can't remember) with a 3sp manual and <50k original miles, completely all original and preserved in a pitch black garage under a car cover. It is white with blue interior, I would almost bet with a full tune up I could drive it out of the garage. I would probably build my dream I-6 for that car and try to keep it as original looking as possible, the paint just needs to be buffed out and the interior needs to be cleaned up so that would probably be left alone.

wow that would be awesome, how did u find that? 250 with the aussie head would be the way to go, 300hp wouldnt be unreasonable from a 250 with a little work, and you would still get decent milage.

that is indeed a nice automobile, i could have purchased a '23 ford roadster for about 1000 bucks in mexico but i decided not to, i'm a chevy guy so that kind of affected my decision even though that was a nice car, it even had headers already. i'm seriously considering buying a '59 caddy, looks exactly like this except its junked, it only has primer (which is rusting arleady) and everything pretty much needs restoration, is it a good investment? or should i wait for that perfect chevy?

Went exploring on some land that most people are convinced is haunted, there is one huge house with a basment garage where the car is stored. There is also an old Y-Block powered 2-Ton truck out there too, that would be pretty cool to have. I would like to buy the land, but the state owns it and won't give it up. Three houses, a barn, two large sheds and a separate 4 car garage all on 12 secluded acres.
There are also some mods that can be done to fit a modern Aussie Crossflow head on a 250, but I don't know about reliability.

well, as soon as i got back i looked around online and saw that most don't go for over 10 grand, the most expensive one was this one, and it pretty much looked like this, the one i saw though had brown paint but everthing else is the same. i was surprised to see such a car in that condition in that particular neighborhood but i asked around and everything is legit.

yeah that would seem a little fishy,
59 caddie drop tops are good investments, if its not a convertible its pretty worthless though. i mean in a monetary sense, any classic is a good investment if your in it for your self :bigwink:

That's fucking true. Unless you find a niche in the market, they are not worthwhile investments if you expect a reliable cashflow. Look at how many small used car dealers go out of business even though their cars are good models and condition and low prices as well...

just go down south, i recall seeing a junked '66 charger as well as some early 40's cadillacs. this last time i went to mexico i saw a lot of old mustangs, all in excelent condition and most on sale, im talking about the '65-68 models, perhaps the reason i see so many old cars with great potential to be restored is because i go to a borderside city, not deep inside mexico, i doubt i would find any muscle cars in mexico city or morelia.

im 20, never done a full resto, dont have the money. but i have done pretty much everything on different cars and other peoples cars, now that i think of it, if i had just done everything to one car it would be a nice ride. i have never painted a complete car though, body work/paint is what i have the least experience in, but i hope to gain more skills in that area on this ranchero.

yeah, im looking forward to painting a car, i have taken automotive painting classes at college but all we got to do was single panels and then a front clip off a f-250, it was lame because ther was nothing to look forward to, wet sanding for hours on a f-250 front clip was pretty gay, knowing that a sweet car will be the result will be a lot more motivating and fun.

THE RANCHERO RUNS!!!!!:D i couldnt belive it, all i had to do was clean the points and free up the float in the carb, other than that added gas, a battery, and brake fluid. it starts, goes into gear, moves, and even stops! and get this, all the lights/signals work and it even has a working power seat! i didnt even know you could get a power seat in a 1961 falcon/ranchero. :boink:

How does it idle? My guess is really friggin' roughly. :D

ther were 2 things that didnt make it run, i spent about 10 minutes looking at the things that i knew would do it tho :D
and it idles really smooth actually, but it has an exhaust leak so thers a tick to it.
im going to air up the tires and go for a test drive around the neighborhood later tonight, i hope it goes well.

Glad to hear that it runs, though I didn't have much doubt it would run. I am amazed that it stopped, those single resivior master cylinders like to leak past the seals. I used to have one on my '66, it scared the hell out of me, 6 pumps before I had any usable pressure . Now I have a '67 master and a '70-ish combo valve, works much better and is much safer.

Wow. That's pretty sweet. That wouldn't be my favorite body style, but it is certainly a good find. A free classic car that runs with little work. There's a junkyard in my area with all kinds of sweet old cars, but Pennsylvania has all the acid rain so they are rusted to hell and back :wah:. They even have two Pacers! Speaking of Pacers, check out this picture (http://www.vincewylde.com/photo/images/4X4Pacer1%20400.jpg) I found.

it's supposed to be harder than a medical degree, but i figure it's no big deal if you fuck up an operation on an animal, you just euthanase and tell them to start over.
