Planescape and Crusader are both awesome choices. I hated the beginning story with the portals and shit in Planescape, but it turned out to be a very decent RPG, rivalling Fallout in every way possible.

Crusader always made you think, even though it was an action game. The last levels got fucking insane.

Those three series have taken more off of my life than I can even comprehend. Simcity 4 is my current love. Although I am on Ocarina of Times final temple. Fucking Gannon's castle is messsing me up. I don't know how many times I've beaten that game. Good times though. :)

3. Return to Castle Wolfenstein (Xbox Live only)

While the single player mode was terrible, I don't think I have ever had as much fun in an online game as I did in this. Compared to current online console standards, the game is now virtually unplayable with control issues and lag, but at the time its gameplay was phonominal. Coordinating with teammates to steal or defend the documents over the headset delivered an incredible rush. If it weren't for this game, my Xbox would have been a paper weight for the two years leading up until the release of Halo 2.

2. GTA: San Andreas

I had rented the first two GTA games, but this was the first one I actually purchased. If you have nothing to do, you could easily play the first 30 hours in a single sitting. Even after you beat the game, there is so much to do and explore there is virtually unlimited replay value in this game. It took me a whopping 50 hours to complete, plus I've spent an additional 30 hours just fooling around so far!!! Plus I haven't even tried the multiplayer or burglary missions!!! The only thing that could make this better is if you could replay missions for fun.

Maybe it is just nostalgia talking since this was my first game, but imo this is not only the greatest platform game ever made, but the best game ever made period. There are about 100 levels in this game, and not a single one is filler. They are all designed for maximum fun and enjoyment. Plus you have a game world that encourages exploration like no other 2D platformer ever has. And of course, there's Yoshi. My SNES is now in a closet, but I really want to get this game for my DS.

I just read on a Shenmue website that they are planning to release the rest of the series on one of the next Gen consoles...the game is basicaly finnished but it has been in hibernation waiting for Sega to make a deal with one of the consoles. It aparantly looks like its likely that it will be released on the 360.
