PS3 Core / 360 Premium
Harddrive: 20 GB/ 20 GB

Ethernet: Yes / Yes

Wireless Cont: Yes / Yes

HDMI/DVI: No / No

MemCard Card Reader: No / No

Numb. of USB: 4 / 3

Mouse/Keyboard game support: Yes / limited to chatting and browsing (game support to be announced)

BlueRay/HD DVD: Yes / No ($100 for addon)

Price: $500 / $400($500 with HD DVD addon)

To me they're almost the same, but the incentive to buying a stripped down PS3 is the ability to use my mouse and keyboard to play FPS games and also have a built in Blue-Ray player.(not that im going to buy the strip down ver.) Now be honest and tell me which looks like a better value.

Wii fans, this has nothing to do with you, i support you ok, so carry on.

pretty balanced. i guess now it just comes down to which games you enjoy more. besides, that's all that matters anyway. (for me, it is and has always been pc games)

I'm more worried about the games, not how much stuff it has devoted into the system. Its the games, THE GAMES!!!

A mouse and keyboard would be awesome for first person shooters. I've been wanting for Xbox or PS3 games to support something like that for a while. I didn't know that PS3 was actually going to let people use it... Sony just stepped up a notch in my book.

As for which system is better, from the information you gave it would appear that the "lesser" PS3 is better but I don't know enough about the specifics of both consoles to make an argument one way or the other.

I hate the idea of using a mouse and keyboard on a console. I guess it's fine for a single player campaign, but it would be too much of an advantage for online play. That's why I don't like it.

BlueRay/HD DVD: Yes / No ($100 for addon)

This is tricky. Will the PS3 core have the Blue Ray drive? Yes. Will it play Blue Ray movies in high def.? No. Since the core does not have HDMI, it will not support HDCP software, wich will soon be Hollywoods standard anti-piracy software. So Blue Ray movies will be displayed in bad quality. I'm unsure if the 360 will have the same problem with it's add-on player if you're only using component cables.

According to your list, the extra usb port and Blue Ray drive was the PS3's only aspects that beat the 360. Since the Blue Ray drive won't play movies in high def., and an extra usb port isn't much in the age of wireless controllers, I would have to say that puts them at about equal.

So only two factors are left, price and Game quality. Game quality, imo, is the most important. If the PS3 has much better games,(I'm not saying it will) then it might be worth the extra $100 for a PS3.

You forgot to name the things the 360 does better. I call Shenanigans.

PS3 has aegis physx. 360 does not. Which means it can have realistic liquid, bending metal, realistic destruction, and more. Alot of people dont know this...

Most TVs dont have HDMI inputs anyway. I honestly dont know one person that does. As long you have the HD components, you should be fine.

Simply not true for HDDVD and Blue Ray. You won't be fine.

Here's an article from ign talking about the anti-piracy crap that's gonna screw over millions of HDTV owners.

http://gear.ign.com/articles/691/691408p1.html

This next article is about various PS3 topics, but it MOSTLY about the cheap version not being able to play dvds in high definition, not too far down from the top.http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/709/709495p1.html

You can watch movies in HD using the component cables. The problem is that component cables don't support HDCP, where as HDMI does. Basically, when an HDCP protected disc detects that the component cables don't support HDCP, it automatically downgrades the resolution from 1080 to 540 or whatever. So this won't be a problem with Blu-Ray discs that aren't HDCP protected. Now, there was an article on IGN that said that Hollywood could possibly delay the use of HDCP until 2010 or even 2012, making this point completely mute. As of now there's no official announcement that they'll delay it, but most likely Sony has some inside information that made them decide not to include HDMI in the core system. Only time will tell I guess.

Europe probably won't get the stripped down version of the PS3 so we're left with a choice between a £280 Premium Xbox 360 and a £425 PS3. Both prices are pretty outrageous (especially compared to the United States) but I know which one I'd go for. The only game left with Sony that makes me want to get a PS3 is MGS4 and I'm afraid that's not nearly enough. I'd rather get a 360 and try a bunch of new games (I've never played Halo, for a start) but still be able to play the classics like GTA4.

Halo's a good game. Probably the best console shooter to date. I'm still torn on whether to get a PS3 or a 360, though. I want a PS3 because I know that the hardware is better, and will have a much longer life span, but a lot of the games I'm interested in are for the 360. Maybe I can convince my roommate to get an XBox and I'll get a PS3.

That's pretty much what I said, except for What I highlighted. This is from the second article I posted:
Though most studios have agreed to a one or two year grace period in which the Image Constraint Token will not be implemented while American consumers make the switch to next-gen DVD and purchase HDCP-ready HDTVs and PCs, barring a massive retreat on the part of the Hollywood studios, HDCP and ICP are the future of Hi-Def movies, and the $499 PS3 will not be invited to the party.

They're saying there will be a one, maybe two, year delay in the implentation. I don't know where you got the year 2012. From what I understand, 520p is not HD. I thought it wasn't HD until you got to at least 720p? They won't play movies in HD when HDCP is implemented. I just don't think the cheap PS3 will be worth the $500 if it won't be an HD DVD movie player like they said. But that's my opinion.

After all that said, it's still too far in the future to know what's going to happen for sure. But I do belive that Holly Wood does not give a shit about the 3 million plus people that started the HD revolution, and will screw them over without a second thought.

Theses things are foor gaming not interwebs/pc stuff

why would i want to pay sony an annual online fee when i already have high speed internet that i'm paying for right now? plus, i already have a great LCD screen for my pc and if i wanted a decent hdtv for my PS3 i would have to dish out another 800 bucks AT LEAST. on another note, when the PS3 comes out, it will be 5 years until the PS4 comes out. that means that PS3 gamers will have roughly 1.5 - 2 years of top of the line graphics, then for the next 3.5 years everything on the PS3 will be outdated.. where you can update your pc whenever you want.

Here's the link to the article talking about the possible delay. And you're right, 540p is not HD. Why they feel like downgrading the resolution is a form of protection, I don't know. I guess they don't care if you copy their movies, just as long as you don't get them in HD.

I sure hope that turns out to be true. I know it's been hard to get Americans to make the HDTV switch. There was actually a bill in Congress stating that 2005 was the deadline for all tv signals to be changed to an HD signal. That failed. Now it's supposed to be 2008. That'll fail too, unless there is a major drop in HDTV prices. I think it'll be much harder for the switch to HDDVDs and Blue Ray to be succesfull, if the consumers will have to buy a new tv for it. I think Hollywood should delay HDCP as long as possible.

I hate the idea of using a mouse and keyboard on a console. I guess it's fine for a single player campaign, but it would be too much of an advantage for online play. That's why I don't like it.

I hate it when people say that it would be too much of an advantage. . .here are two clever ideas to get right around that reasoning:

1) How about if in the chat lobby, you have a Keyboard, and Controller section, and you keep them moderated so that it'll stay fair? Or better yet, have the online service auto detect a keyboard and/or mouse and only allow you to log into the appropriate chats.

2) If they're so much of an advantage, what if everyone just used the keyboard and mouse, and said "to hell with the controller!!" ?

And from what i've seen/heard, the Playstation 3 will NOT be worth the extra ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS. With that hundred dollars, I can put it towards food, or paying the bills or whatever. . .or like, another game or two. SOMETHIN'.

It would be too much of an advantage for shooters. Aiming with a mouse is more precise that that of a controller. Especially since some games use a tad bit of sticky targeting to compensate for it. I never said anything about the chatting. Some PS2 games supported a keyboard for chatting, it was pretty handy.

400 for 360 premium 500 for PS3 cheaper version (can't watch HD movies)
ok hardware is the same graphics-wise i mean. Physically, PS3 is worth more, note the higher price, but in terms of capablilites the 360 and ps3 are basically the same. lets look at games: 360 wins that, more exclusives and more third party support, many more japanese developers

ok online: pretty easy, 360 wins

really hardware wise they're pretty even, graphics are the same in capability no matter what you're told.

games wise xbox 360 definately wins, ps3 lost a lot of franchises, 360 gained exclusives,

price 360 gives you way more value for the price, 400 for most expensive version, ps3's is $100 more and that's for the cheapy version, for a console that does the same thing as a 360

for developers 360 is MUCH easier to program for, enabling developers to spend less and free up time.

^dude...I'm not really on either side here, I'm gonna wait and play them all then decide...but you are so far from the point and so blind by your fan-boyism, it's just terrible.

First of all, the whole point of the original post was to show that the PS3 "cheapy" actually has more to it hardware wise then the premium 360, more specifically, more then $100 worth of more hardware. Therefore making it a better deal and better then the premium 360, based on hardware value alone.

Secondly, the main two points of your post are unanswerable right now. Only fanboys would argue those points. You are saying xbox live is better then the playstation online community (or whatever they are going to call it) without having seen sony's online community. And the "better games" argument is something only time will tell.

Don't get so defensive man, it's a fact that the playstation is physically worth more then the 360. He didn't say that it's better or that it's going to blow it away. He's just saying that people getting bent out of shape because of the price are overreacting, and you proved that.

If you wanna talk about getting the best value for your money, this is the way I look at it(and I'm gonna use the premium version of the PS3 to compare). I, personally, would like one form of HD video, be it HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, so I'll compare the PS3 with Blu-Ray to the XBox 360 with the optional external HD-DVD drive.

http://gear.ign.com/articles/705/705817p1.html

"If Sony can, in fact, manage to support the losses associated with selling the PS3 for so little, the final cost of an Xbox 360 ($400) as well as an add-on HD-DVD player may well exceed the PS3's cost. While the Xbox.com article withholds the price for the HD-DVD add-on, it's unlikely Microsoft will choose to sell the drive at a loss, due to the fact that it will not be able to recoup losses on the device via game-sales, as it can with a dedicated console. Even coming in at $250, half the retail price of base-line dedicated HD-DVD players, the final combined cost of Xbox 360 and HD-DVD drive of $650 may actually end up being more expensive than a PS3."

This was taken from an article on IGN(the link above), and it was written before Sony announced the price of the PS3, so it's assuming that the launch price will be $400-$500. We now know that the launch price is $500-$600, but when comparing the two systems with similar hardware, the PS3 actually comes out a little cheaper. Now when you compare the two, the PS3 is slightly more powerful, has a superior form of next-gen HD video(Blu-Ray holds 50 gigs, HD-DVD holds 35, i think, can't remember where I read that) and Sony has the ability to use Blu-Ray discs for their video games as well, while MS has already stated that the HD-DVD drive will only be used for watching movies. Considering all of this, it seems to me that the PS3 is at least slightly better than the 360 in every way(excluding the games, but that's all a matter of opinion anyway) and it is slightly less expensive when you add the cost of the HD-DVD drive to the 360.

What the hell? I thought the hddvd add on was only going to be 100 bucks. I've been thinking that for a while. Where the hell did I get that number? I don't think I would just make that up. I'll be back when I find out more.

I figured it would be about a hundred bucks, too, until I read that article. I think a guy I used to work with told me it would be $100. He was probably thinking of the hard drive. But even if it came out at $150(which seems unlikely), it would still be close to the price of the PS3 for a 360 and the external drive.

i look at the HD dvd add on this way. i might get it, if 360 games are made on that format, but if they can fit Oblivion on one disc, then i don't think it's too much of a deal... for now at least.

Well MS has already stated that they're not gonna make games using the HD-DVD drive. And the capacity of the discs might not be making a difference now, but I'm sure it will by the end of this generation. If it does, it would make it very difficult to make cross-platform games.

I hate the idea of using a mouse and keyboard on a console. I guess it's fine for a single player campaign, but it would be too much of an advantage for online play. That's why I don't like it.
Not true in all cases. Halo PC players were put vs Halo Xbox players and the Xbox players won. The game was on PC but one team used keyboards and the other used controllers.

Halo sucked for PC. The controls weren't nearly as intuitive as most PC FPS's, so I'd blame that more on the programmers that ported it.

I buy consoles to play games and that is all. So why do sony and M$ continue to push all this other bullshit on me when they come out with new consoles? Either way I'm not paying $500 for a PS3 lite or $600 for a PS3. That's rent and cable bill for a month. I'm no fanboy but fuck Sony, at least till the price drops, a lot.
