this is the simplest game in the fucking world man.
what character class are you? just choose what upgrades to have depending on what style of player you are.

I actually never played Diablo or Diablo II but I've been meaning to get my hands on a copy of it. Maybe if I get the energy I'll search on ebay or something and try to snag a copy cheap.

Warning: This post is long and will probably confuse you.
Well, just play through the game on your own, single player or b.net first. If you need help deciding what skills and such to use, google some class guides. Keep in mind, most guides assume you know what you are doing and base stat points on people who have access to nice gear.
I recommend making a cold sorc after you get a hang of how the game works. Have her rushed(explained below) and just run the bosses Andariel and Mephisto for loot. Sorcs are good for noobs because they do good damage, are less gear dependent, and have teleport as a skill, so you can move to bosses really fast.
Now, if you want to be godly:
Below is a guide on how to become a level 80 Hammerdin in a few hours, and do some pretty good damage even with no gear.
First and foremost, put all of your stat points into Vitality, life for the win. Keep in mind, this is assuming you can get your hands on a Breast Plate Enigma(Runeword armor). It adds a ton of strength, so you can use most of the gear you need. Well actually, use this guide for gear and skill points: http://rpgexpert.com/3488.html Also, you will probably need to use the stat points that guide suggests on your first hammerdin.
This is what you do. Make a paladin. In the chat, offer your forges(act IV quest that drops runes people need) for norm-hell rush. Someone will eventually rush you. A rush is just a high-level killing bosses for you in each difficulty.
After the rusher kills Diablo in hell difficulty, you do chaos runs until you hit level 60. Chaos runs are where high-levels run noobs around the Chaos Sanctuary, but they get the drops. I guess there is better drops if more people are in the game.
Once you hit 60, have some random person help you will hell ancients. The ancients are 3 uber warriors, whom you must kill to enter Baal's lair. You need to be 60 for hell ancients, 40 for nightmare, 20 for normal.
Once you have completed the hell ancients, you do Baal runs. Baal is the final boss, but you will learn real quick that bosses are pussies in this game. Uber high level characters use bots to run Baal, the bot teleports to Baal using Enigma armor. The bots do a shitload of damage and you just leech the experience.
Once you hit around 80, you can try doing Andy runs on your own. Andy is the Act I boss. You will need to steal drops/solo Andy in order to buy some godly gear. You can trade items you find for forum gold on the d2jsp forums: http://forums.d2jsp.org/index.php?showforum=51.

From about level 30-80, all I did was constant Baal runs with my friend's Level 90 Sorceress.
