View Full Version : Games that "wowed" you back in the day?

What games made you say "wow" when they were new but now you wonder how you were ever impressed?

I remember playing TMNT: Turtles in Time for SNES and thinking how the graphics were so good, especially how you could through bad guys into the screen. Looking back, it's still a kickass game, but how I ever thought those graphics were good is a mystery.

Another example is Perfect Dark. When it came out the graphics were pretty sweet. Then I went back and tried to play it a few weeks ago and not only were the graphics not at all like I remembered them, but the controls felt so awkard - I needed a 2nd thumbstick to look around with!

Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I was shocked at how fun it was. I rented it for two days and then I bought it the same day I returned the rental.

When I played Metal Gear Solid for the first time, I was amazed to no end at the way the whole game unfolded.

Also, the first Call of Duty had me on the edge of my seat (Red Square was fucking incredible. Short, but incredible.)

the first Call of duty was very awesome, the visuals are still great, the sounds are the best i've heard yet for any game, this game made the iron sights popular, plus it had the fg-42, (wolfenstien is the only other game i know of with a fg42??)

Deus Ex's storyline was one of my favorites of all time, plus it was super fun. invis. war gayed it up though

tiberium sun was very cool for its time, Generals was even better.

Speaking of which, why the hell wasn't the FG-42 in any of the other Call of Duty games?

i don't know, it was very awesome. and it was never in multiplayer. whenever i'd hear it i'd go outa my way to get it. they could've made it the assualt rifle in some maps, just take away the scope. and it would be balanced. since russia has their crazy ass 71 round ppsh(goddamn thing never runs out in a fight)

I'd say Battlefield 1942, when I first got it, wowed me, as it was so... unique. And of course Call of Duty, the original one. Its still intense to this day.

Starfox
original Starfox, for SNES.
Those graphics were amazing.

EDIT:
I've been wowed by many games in the past, but more than others.

the arcade Mortal Kombat 1. i was amazed by the real character actors they used. it wasn't the first fighting game to use real character actors, but it was the best looking at that time. oh and blood, gore, and fatalities.

Metal gear solid wowed me very much... The graphics and the storyline, easily one of the top 10 best ever...

All the Resident Evil games wowed me... Final fantasy 7 wowed me back when it was very first released because although i found it very difficult it was the first time i was exposed to an adventure + RPG... The graphics were pretty average for the day but the story and the music just gave it so much depth it was awesome. For me FF7 is the best game of all time, but that's just my opinion of course.

CoD also wowed me, especially red square as someone has already pointed out... Also the Pegasus bridge map... CoD i think may be the only game ever to immerse me so much to the point that i actually cried as i felt so sorry for the men that had to live out that hell in the real WW2.

Oh and i can't forget Battlefield 2... I never played BF1942 unfortunately so when i got BF2 it was unreal - Like a wargame i had never experienced before. If you got bored of being infantry, you can be special forces and act behind enemy territory and blow up radars and shit... Get bored of that you can snipe, be an engineer and support your team, anti tank guided missles to blow shit up...

And as if that wasn't enough you can jump in a tank, an APC, 2 different types of jet, attack helicopters, transport helicopters... Or if you're into strategy, you can be the commander and fire artillery at your enemy! Awesome.

And can't forget Rome: Total War. I'm into history and strategy so this game was awesome for me. The graphics were good too. The mods that have been released since make it even better.

In a way yes. That particular map places you as one of the many millions of Russian soldiers in WW2 that were used as cannon fodder and regard for their life was nil. You are on a ship with about 60 men and sailing over the river Volga to join the fight in the city of Stalingrad at the point where the Germans have captured all but a few pockets of the city. As you are making your way across stukas are strafing your ship, men are dropping like flies, artillery is hitting the water, the graphics are great so it looks real. On the side of the ship is a commisar telling you that in the coming battle, any cowards who retreat will be shot. When you're off the ship, instead of a weapon you are handed a handful of rifle bullets.

When you make your way up the beach there's a huge artillery bombardment from your side and the Germans are pushed back. At this point you are about to storm red square. In front of you is a commisar and a soldier manning a machine gun who open fire on Russian soldiers who are retreating because there is absolutely no chance of survival. The commisar gives a rather invigorating speech that ends with the famous "Not one step backwards, for mother Russia!" and everybody charges, your comrades drop like flies as they are thrown at the German line with no consideration whatsoever and when that particular level is finally over, you realise that what you just played out in a game, millions of men just like yourself actually played out in real life 60 years ago... Most of which died and are buried in mass graves somewhere to this day.

All this makes you just a tad bit emotional, especially with the music that plays. Ever cried at the end of a movie? It's exactly the same as that.

DOOM - i was obsessed with this game as a kid, i played no game more than Doom II

Quake - the graphics to this game when it came out amazed me. There were these pink zombies that tore off their limbs and threw them at you, and they had a moan that gave me nightmares, yet that only made me want to play the game more.

Super Mario 64 - fuck this game rocked, i couldnt believe how many places you go and how big the game was, and the graphics, fuck i loved the graphics.

Starfox 64 - i played the Starfox for SNES and when i played this one i beat it after a couple of tries, but i kept playing it and beating it and never got bored with it.

Rollercoaster Tycoon - i would spend literally all day playing this game

The Sims - see RCT's description

Urban Assault - a Microsoft game that came when i bought one of my older computers, i thought it was awesome, gameplay and graphic-wise.

SimCity - the really really old school 2D one, i thought that game was mint. I remember the fact that there were traffic lights and that cars obeyed them tickled me.

dude i played the freaking game, sure people died. Sure its a bad thing, but crying doesnt make them get better. If a survivor saw you crying over the game, he'd be too pissed at the fact that you are using the war as a enteritainment to give a shit about you crying over it. In the end it just makes you out to be a pussy.

oh and if you did cry, you dont tell anyone about it.

There's no shame in crying. Crying doesn't make one a pussy. World war 2 was the war of all wars... Much happened during those 5 darkest years Europe has ever been through. Around 50 million Europeans dead in 5 years as a direct result of 1 insane maniac who was allowed into power, but for the Russians it was the worst of all. They had to fight against an enemy that saw them as less than human, and would treat them as slaves, and they had to fight for a tyrant who, during his reign, killed around 20 million of his own people... You were fighting for a tyrant who didn't care about anything but his own power, against a tyrant who would enslave your entire country... So when i think what these men had to go through it makes me quite emotional, but i don't expect you to understand what with you having no compassion for your fellow humans whatsoever.

yea and your playing a video game about it. nice one, if you really respected the soliders you wouldnt invest in games which exploited the war for entertainment, instead you would go to the memorials and cemetries.

Why? We all exploit the freedom they fought for... Why is that different than playing a game about it?

At least i actually DO respect them for it whereas most of my generation wouldn't even know what year the second world war began, what nations were involved and who was responsible...

Sweet, an "on topic" response...

Anyway, I just thought of another "wow" moment from video games back in the day.

I got an original gameboy when they first came out and enjoyed it quite a bit. But then I saw my friend's Sega Gamegear and was so impressed because it was in color and bright and Sonic was pretty awesome.
