Anyone know of a good MUD to play? I haven't been into one for about fifteen years or so. I'm looking for something fairly straightforward and simple, a good one for a new player to MUD's.
Any ideas?

ive been around for a while and 'MUD' just baffels me, i would look it up only im figure just to show people how unlazy i am im going to spend more time writing this post asking you to explain what this kind of game is rather than look it up for myself. You maything 'writing this is quicker' think again, im writing at 1 word per minute
so here it goes
wtf is MUD

MUD = Multi User Dungeon
They're generally text based, and almost always RPG's. It's kinda like playing a book as a game instead of a movie.

... so you dont kill anyone? who would make a game like that? and why?

A MUD is a text based RPG. Yes, you kill stuff.
Tough to find a populated MUD nowadays. Everyone is playing Runescape and WOW. Most kids don't want to read or use their imagination anyway.
I played quite a few MUDs back in my crazier days. ;) Merentha was one I had lots of fun with. I don't think anyone plays it anymore, but it's still up.

there was an rpg-like free online game where you picked from a race of human, orc, elf, or dwarf to be and attack others through text entry. you had a limited amount of attacks dailey. with every attack you take away their gold which can be used for weapons, armore, etc.
the game seems stupid, but it was sure addictive. i think it's just the feeling of stealing other players gold and powering up that makes it addicting. i forgot what the game is called, but maybe that qualifies as a MUD?

Yeah, they're pretty great once you get into one. It's just been so long, I'm trying to find a more simplistic one. MUD's tend to have a very steep learning curve.
Trying to find something I can play to burn some of the downtime here at work. :D Already into nexuswar which is pretty awesome, but only good for 10 minutes or so a day.
A few good games to try out at home are:
TRPG (Tribes RPG): Download Tribes 1 (for free), make sure it's updated. Download the TRPG mod, shouldn't be too difficult to find, and patch that up to date as well. Awesome game.
Shattered Galaxy: Also should be easy to find. Fairly fun MMO RPG/RTS.
Mount and Blade: Another easy one to find. Fantastic medieval style combat game with RPG elements.
I'm just looking for something that you don't need a client for, and doesn't suck (runescape).

OMG!!!!! MUDs!!!!!!!!!
I played a MUD called Dragons Gate for so long (about 4 years).
It started out as an AOL premium game where you had to pay $2.99 an hour or something like that.... my bill was in the $1,000's one time but I didn't have to pay it luckly lol.
Then I think it went to a gaming site called GameStorm and from there it went to its own website with a monthly fee.

I played that like 4 or 5 years ago, I still have a cd with my TRPG installation of tribes on it in my archives. I had a RM level 178 or so on the PCRPG server back before it reset and changed a bunch of stuff.

You'll be suprised how addicting MUDs are if you have a good imagination.
It's like reading a book and writing what happens at the same time.

I used to play a MUD called UnOfficial SquareSoft MUD, or UOSS [ uossmud.sandwich.net:9000 ]. It was pretty cool. It used a version of the job system from FFT, and all the areas were from Squaresoft games. Mostly SNES RPGs, like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, FF3, 5 and then it had some FF7 zones.
Prior to that, I played DizzyMUD and Aardwolf [ aardmud.org:4010 ]. The latter normally had 200-400 people online but I'm not sure how it's doing now. Classic MUD but the areas are almost all original. Nice automatic quest system, wars, clan halls/raids, remorts, etc. Zones like Star Trek:TNG where you kill the Borg Queen and can find Data's missing emotion chip...
Both were very effective distractions.

yeah that's the game. when i use to play it back in the day, it was very simplistic with a lot of bugs and things that needed to be fixed. now i read that it's changed a lot and for the better.

Oh by FAR you want to play Gemstone! http://www.gemstone.net
Gemstone has been around for something like 16 years and is still going strong. Simutronics (the company that made it) is now making an MMO called Hero's Journey
