PS3 to have built-in PS2?
Tuesday 6-Jun-2006 10:24 AM Report suggests the PS2 chipset will be included inside every PS3, plus enhanced PS3 models for the future?

With our ears and eyes kept firmly pointing towards the Land of the Rising Sun, we've uncovered a surprising report this morning from Japan's Ultra One technology magazine. According to the mag, Sony will be achieving PlayStation 3 backwards compatibility through actual physical hardware, rather than previously announced software emulation.

The magazine states that in its current form the PlayStation 3 hardware contains the core PS2 chipset, which presumably means that the PS2's Emotion Engine CPU chip and Graphics Synthesiser are present underneath the PS3's slick shell.

Of course adding extra hardware drives up costs, and with actual hardware physically present we can presumably wave goodbye to any kind of visual upgrade we might have expected from software emulation. Although on the flip side, having the chipset present almost guarantees that every PS2 game will be able to run on PS3.

Advertisement:Ultra One adds that once it has finished developing a software alternative, Sony will remove the PS2 chipset from future iterations of the PS3. This will presumably drive down the already-harsh price tag of the console, dropping it into the realms of 73,000 yen (about 350 GBP).

Another revelation in the mag comes from an interview with Izumi Kawanishi, head of Sony's Software Platform Development Division. In the interview, Kawanishi comments that the main difference between the PS2 and PS3 is that the PS3 hardware, as it was announced, is "nothing more than just the basic system." Upgraded models are apparently planned for the future, with larger hard disks and upgraded network features.

We'll wait for official word from Sony before we hail any of these details as fact.

if that turns out to be true ... what the fuck! Why the fuck have sony a ps2 chipset in there?

Wow, if this is true Sony's retarded as fuck, talk about inefficiency! On the bright side it would mean that when they do get their act together and take out the PS2 hardware the price will go down a fair amount.

Didn't you read your own article? The whole point of the article is to explain why they put the chipset in there. It's because they couldn't figure out a working emulation for PS2 games, which all PS2 game owners demanded and expected out of the PS3. Since they couldn't do that, they just put in PS2 chipset. This just shows how they have been rushed, incompetant or simply focusing on other aspects of the console that they couldn't do this without putting in the PS2 chipset. I'm sure that is going to contribute to the high pricing as well. I have had PS1 and currently a PS2 and I'm recommending people to purchase a Nintendo Wii instead.

Right on. Screw Playstation and it's shoddy over priced rich kid console. I'm getting the Wii, "the people's console" made for the working man. And the controller looks cool. Imagine Metroid where you move with your left hand and simply aim at the screen and fire with your right hand. Sounds cool to me.

you guys don't seem to get it. the first beta model of the PS3 had a PS2 chipset for backward compatibility, but that'll be scrapped and the emulation method will replace that. this means that the PS3 will go down in price. some of the contributing factor of the high 600 price tag is due to those PS2 chipset.

basically, the PS3 is not fully ready for release yet and there are some things that will be fixed or changed for the better. I also read that the final PS3 will allow you to remove your default hard drive and use your bigger capacity store bought hard drive.

this article is similar, but with more details though: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/711/711242p1.html

this sucks in so many ways, i dont wanna play old ps2 games on a ps3, and if i did id want to play them faster and better.

however i like the removable harddrive idea.
