Is there a band you feel the whole world should know about? Tell about them here~

Babes In Toyland -All girl band. Recommended for anyone who likes heavier music. Good songs are Handsome & Gretel, Bruise Violet, or Memory. If you want to check them out this is a live video of them on 120 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_nBejPCnHQ
Watch it all the way through, the end is the best.

Sonic Youth -Experimental/alternativeish band. They've been around for about 20 years and I recently got into them a year or so ago. A good first CD to get would be "Dirty." Another YouTube, their music video "100%": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iva_Y9W3hJ0

MEZARKABUL (known as The Pentagram in Turkey) - Turkish metal band. They don't seem to have that big of a web presence, but google them and you can fins some info, and at least a couple of sites with some samples on.

EDIT: Holy motherfuck, I found them on youtube! I never would have expected that...oh well, knock yourselves out...

I thought you said it was heavier music...

It is, maybe not 80's hair metal heavy, but it's heavy compared to other stuff I listen to.

Yes, and I think it's shite, along with 80's hair metal :)

The Zombies. One of the best out of the '60s. I wish people would give them a chance, but it seems people my age don't pay much attention to the '60s past The Doors, Beatles and a few others.

The Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle

28 amazing songs. Almost every song on that album took its turn being my favorite, definetely going to second BigMatt on that one.

Yeah dude that album got me on them. It is fucking fantastic. You should try and get their other stuff though, I was lucky and found a package on bittorrent with some other albums.

Also, Iron Butterfly has a kick ass catalog of music. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is amazing, and so is their other stuff.

Fuck I'll make a list... hahaha...

Deltron 3030 by Deltron 3030 (Del The Funky Homosapien)
Odyssey and Oracle by The Zombies
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly
Band on the Run - Paul McCartney
A Love Supreme by John Coltrane
Sketches from Spain by Miles Davis
Junta by Phish
God Love Ugly by Atmosphere
Junta by Phish (SERIOUSLY GET THIS)
Terrapin Station and American Beauty by The Grateful Dead
Tales from Topographic Oceans by Yes

And I would like to second Taste's rap recommendations by Gza, Mobb Deep and Nas.

If you want perception-altering, evokative emotional music for all moods, ye can't go wrong with these...

Talk Talk (album: Spirit Of Eden) - influenced: all post rock, Radiohead
Bill Evans Trio (album: Sunday At The Village Vanguard)
Can (albums: Tago Mago, Delay 1968, Monster Movie, Future Days, Landed, Soon Over Babaluma) - influenced: everyone noteworthy, from Sonic Youth to RZA
The Mars Volta (album: Frances The Mute)
GZA/Genius (album: Liquid Swords)
Acid Bath (album: Pagan Terrorism Tactics)
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (album: Abbatoir Blues/Lyre Of Orpheus)
Nas (album: Illmatic)
Roni Size (albums: New Forms, Break Beat Era - Ultra-obscene)
David Bowie (albums: fuck Ziggy, go for Low, Heroes, Aladdin Sane)
Mobb Deep (album: The Infamous)
Genesis (joints: Blood On The Rooftops, The Lamia, Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, The Cinema Show)
Squarepusher (album: Hard Normal Daddy)
Van Morrison (album: Veedon Fleece - almost as good as Astral Weeks)

And if you feel really brave, try some renaissance choral music: Gregorio Allegri, Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, The King's Singers

or some 'world music' (shit term, great stuff):

Hamza El Din - Eclipse, Escalay
Ravi Shankar - At Woodstock
Ali Akbar Kahn - Signature Series
Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn - Qawaalies, Vol. 2
Salif Keita - Moffou, M'Bemba
Tinariwen - Radio Tisdas Sessions

Sondre Lerche is pretty good. Mellow, acoustic-y stuff. A bit like Elliott Smith, only not depressing.

Bowery Electric, Frog Eyes, Wolf Parade, Minus the Bear, and Explosions in the Sky are all very good as well.

Pat The Baker

Van Halen.

Jason Becker is really good too. I only like his instrumental stuff though.

This time, it's going to be more than psychedelic rock :p. Also, I'm double posting to make it easier to read.

Can - Experimental Krautrock - I agree with taste_u. More people should know about this band. Quite experimental and they never grow old.

Camel - Symphonic Prog Rock - Awesome band which more people should know about. They were Opeth's main influence for crying out loud! Start out with Mirage.

Porcupine Tree - Prog rock (modern) - Decently popular within prog circles, but still nowhere near as known as they should be. They started out with Floyd influenced psychedelica and went in the direction of prog. Steven Wilson is the genius brainchild behind them who also co-performed on and produced a few Opeth albums. Start out with In Absentia.

Atheist - Jazzy Prog Death Metal - Not enough people know about this jazz metal goodness. Elements is probably the best album to start with, and it's their lightest, so listen to it even if you dislike death metal.

Freak Kitchen - Prog Metal - I don't know what you'd call these guys - probably progressive/experimental metal, but don't be put off by the prog metal stereotype. Great band, awesome guitarwork and a good sense of humour.

Agalloch - Atmospheric Folk/Doom Metal - ZOMG GET IT!!! Agalloch is an atmospheric band with black metal influence, and I don't think I've heard anything like them before. I only 2 of their albums, but they're great. Start out with Pale Folklore.

Fishbone - Funk/Ska Rock - These guys were a funk/ska band in the late 80s and early 90s. Unfortunately they never made it big despite RHCP's success in a similar vein, and have remained unknown to most people. I think they might actually be active though.

Savatage - Prog metal - Simply put, it's good prog metal with a hell of a lot of skill. Get the Dungeons are Calling EP or Dead Winter Dead.

Carcass - Melodic Death Metal / Grindcore - These guys were one of the innovators of grindcore metal, and they had some great melodeath albums. Start out with Heartwork and Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious and Heartwork.

Amboy Dukes - Acid/Psychedelic Rock - These guys played some great acid rock. I mean they have Ted Fucking Nugent!!! Definitely worth checking out.

Fuzzy Duck - Prog/Psychedelic Rock - They only released one album in 1971 which was prog/psychedelic. It's incredibly hard to find, but also very good.

Gorod - Brutal/Technical Death Metal - Gorod is a French band which is relatively unknown. Basically, these guys keep the technical skill level very high, but they keep the music interesting as well with some nice songwriting. And the vocals are great. Get Neurotripsicks.

Bruce Dickinson - Heavy Metal - Yes, he's very well know as the singer of Iron Maiden, but his solo career doesn't get enough attention. Many would say it's up to Maiden's standard at times.

Jaco Pastorius - Jazz - I'm not as well versed in jazz so I don't know what kind of jazz Jaco is. Jaco is here, not because he's rare (many people know who he is), but because his music needs to be heard, whether you like jazz or not. So... get his S/T.

Chemical Brothers - Electronica - These guys were my virgin electronica band and (like Jaco) should be listened to regardless of prior genre preferences. Get the Singles 93-03 compilation.

Paul Gilbert & Jimi Kidd (Blues Power) - High Powered Blues - Many people know Paul Gilbert as the guitar virtuoso who played in the metal band Racer X. But he also put out an album "Blues Power" with his uncle, Jimi Kidd. Basically, it strikes me as a mixture of blues and metal. If you listen to it expecting John Lee Hooker, you'll be disappointed. Otherwise, you'll probably like it.

Unfortunately I don't have any Dredg albums, but from the few songs I've heard, they could become one of my favourite modern alternative rock bands.

Cheers . I tried to cover a fair few genres in that list and I have a habit of making huge lists in these kinds of threads :).
