I had to go with Kind Of Blue. It got me on jazz a few years ago and to this day I still think it is the greatest album I've ever heard. "So What" is probably the best song I've ever heard as well. I don't know much about the technicalities of music, but this album is fucking incredible in every way I can fathom. If I had to give out one album to encompass jazz, it would be Kind Of Blue.

A Love Supreme is a close second, followed by Head Hunters.

I was wondering when you might make a jazz thread - I was expecting it :).

Anyway, my fav jazz album is Jaco's S/T - the album which got me into jazz.

However I also LOVE Kind of Blue, A Love Supreme, Head Hunters and Maiden Voyage.

Mine would have to be Kind of Blue by Miles Davis.

He's definately a leading figure in Jazz and it was Kind of Blue that first sparked off my interest in Jazz. There's this quality about Kind of Blue that just makes me want to carry on listening to it. It's just a great album.

If Kind Of Blue was four tracks it\'d probably be closer to my favourite. \'Flamenco Sketches\' is one of the most gorgeous pieces of music of all time - for whatever reason I just don\'t like \'Freddy Feeloader\' though.

Giant Steps is overrated

My pick, at least for John Coltrane is either Crescent or A Love Supreme.

Mingus is criminally underrated, Jaco very overrated in the scheme of things...

I'll agree with you about Mingus being under-rated. About Jaco though, I can't agree. He's not even recognized by a wide enough audience to be overrated. Most people never even heard of him. And since you're probably just talking about the people who do know who he is, I don't think he can be overrated. Maybe in terms of physical talent, ie his speed/technicality/ability to shred etc. But the changes he made in the world of bass are unmatched, nobody has done that much for their instrument since and he can't get enough credit for what he did.

I put creativity and emotion and self-expression > technical ability. Jaco seems to be the poster boy of cross over rock fans at the expense of upper-echelon jazz Gs. Still pretty dope on the whole though.

I think I'm missing something here. If you put creativity, emotion and self-expression over technical ability, then you should love Jaco. I know what you mean though, a lot of kids "like" Jaco just to say they like Jaco. If you know anything about music/bass/jazz though, give his music a good hard listen and try to tell me he wasn't a musical genius.

Good luck with trying to convince a bass player that Jaco is anything less than a god :D.

I think he's a genius and I think his songwriting is very deep and intricate besides the fact he's very technically skilled.

In terms of jazz bass, I like Marcus Miller a lot as well.
