i really dislike when heavy bands have a couple ballad songs on an album, and release those as singles.
releasing those songs gives people the wrong impression of the band as a whole.

examples are System of a Down's "Lonely Day." it's a good song, sure, but to be (correct me if im wrong) the second single from Hypnotize is wrong.

another example is Avenged Sevenfold making "Seize the Day" a single. i rarely speak ill of Avenged Sevenfold, but this was not the right thing to do - not for themselves, and not for their fans.

post your thoughts on the issue, and other examples. save the 'a7x sucks lol' posts for another thread.

a7x sucks lol

But srsly... David Lee Roth had a problem with the single release of Dance The Night Away because it was kind of different from what the band usually did. I still like it though. He said it would send the wrong message.

Yeah, I hate the way Soundgarden released Black Hole Sun as their massive single, which is very different to the rest of their stuff, which is much better than Black Hole Sun.

a7x suck lol. You really asked for it. But seriously they do suck.

Avenged Sevenfold? Backstreet-metal.

Dragonforce sound like Ibiza club hits laid over metal guitar - apalling.

Listen to some fucking Opeth.

opeth fucking rules. so does dragonforce, and to a degree a7x

get past the adolescent faux-rebellion of disliking something because it's popular. if 3 people have heard of a7x instead of 3 million most people who rag on em all day would be big fans

it's not a faux-rebellion thing...I hate when people pull that crap...the reason people rag on them is because 3 million people listen to them! That's the problem! And I don't mean to pick on A7X specifically (same thing goes for Fall Out Boy) but don't you think that makes sense? People are annoyed with the fact that they got popular even though they feel they suck...alright, I'm done...I'm sorry if this thread goes in another direction but it wasn't my intention

Black Hole Sun is a great song.

What these bands should do is mix the two. Do a rock ballad. Perfect example is Fall To Pieces by Velvet Revolver.

Black Hole Sun is a great song.

Not compared to the rest of their catalogue; Superunknown, Spoonman, Jesus Christ Pose, Rusty Cage, Loud Love etc.

It makes a good sing-a-long live though.

This reminds me of Sugar Ray's second album, titled Floored. People heard the ONLY single off of that album, titled Fly, and then thought the band were the pop/reggae/whatever band they would become on their following release 14:59. So people rushed to the stores to buy it and were disappointed when they found out that every other track on the album was funky nu-metal.

and thus we have the formula that every single hair metal band used. ballad - heavy song - rinse and repeat.

ballads are neither good nor bad. ballads become the "big hit" for most bands because record execs don't want to release something as a single unless they know it's going to sell. and for most new bands the only definate seller is the ballad. personally i wish more bands would stop trying to write a ballad for every album. but with that said, i'm not going to deny liking a lot of slower songs by heavier bands.

Nope - as an example Dr. Dre is extremely popular but also good, as are Pink Floyd, Beatles etc. - I downloaded ax7's 'city of evil' and 'Inhuman Rampage' by Dragonforce, thought both were appaling, latter sounded like trancey dance-pop music in metal arrangement.

ax7leet youve said many times that you used to think newfound glory was a talented band until you started listening to avenged sevenfold, have you considered that in a year youll look on avenged sevenfold the way you look at newfound glory now?

Truly insane people think that everybody else is going crazy not them, could the entire forum being against you possibly be a sign?

:wah:

But it was different to all the stuff they'd done before Superunknown, and IMO it sucked.

lol 'musicianship of Dream Theater'.

i commend you on remembering that. i did indeed think NFG was a talented band until i heard a7x.
however, i have also said that i do not believe a7x is the most technically talented band ever. they are good, not amazing.

when I think of a7x, I think of Chapter Four and Strength of the World, not Warmness on the Soul and Seize the Day

Warmness on the soul is like almost just piano playing.

The other kind of ballad includes:

My Immortal - Evanescence
The Reason - Hoobastank
Here Without You - 3 Doors Down

No rock infusion whatsoever.

And "Lonely Day" is the worst song I've ever heard from SOAD.
