Could some thrash metal (and death metal) fans explain what they find attractive about the genre, I really don't understand how anyone can enjoy it.

I don't get how you don't get it. And what do you consider thrash? We might have different perceptions of the genre.

It's a great release of pent-up aggression, and the compositional structures are really pleasing to me - its aggression, but measured aggression. It took me a while to get into, I recommend you listen to the songs 'My Last Words', 'Good Mourning/Black Friday' and 'Hangar 18' by Megadeth.

It's just so angry and dischordant. And the solo's are so crazy and atonal most it just doesn't make melodic sense to me. Is it mainly about rhythm like hardcore dance music and grime is?

Don't speak down to me this is a sensible debate and as I'm a producer with an A level in music and grade 8 on two instruments I think I probably know more about music than you.

Well Slayer and Anthrax's solos aren't exactly the best, and one of the Slayer guitarists has admitted he doesn't know musical scales. Anthrax aren't very angry, they're more fun. Sepultura only did 2 or 3 thrash albums, the rest is nu-metal. Pantera aren't really thrash and only did a couple of decent albums.
Korn and Slipknot are shit. [/end discussion about that]
Come back when you have listened to Megadeth (Hanger 18, My Last Words, Tornado of Souls, Wake up Dead, Rattlehead) and Testament (Alone in the Dark, the New Order, Trial By Fire, The Preacher)
Also, I know several people who are doing Music A level and like metal.

I'd imagen there's loads, 4 out of 9 in my music set were metal heads. It just doesn't seem musical to me.

What do you consider a good singer anyway?
These thrash/death bands have good singers (IMO):
Nuclear Assault
Anthrax
Megadeth
Exhorder
Metal Church
Testament (early)
D.R.I.
Mekong Delta
Overkill (early)

if a band screams or shouts or growls etc, in order for me to like them, they have to mix in some clean vocals.

Much of it's not meant to actually be enjoyable in the traditional sense. Think about watching a horror movie or tasting hot salsa/ vodka. I doubt many people would describe any of these experiences as pleasant but that doesn't mean you can't get something out of them. Those are the best parallels I can give you.

I'd recommend giving Slayer another listen. They have made some really good music in their day. The solos are off and on, but they arn't as bad as people in this thread would have you think, and they often fit well within the song. Check out Raining Blood, Angel of Death, and Postmortem off of their Reign in Blood album. To put it in perspective, you might also want to check out a less thrashy song by them called "Seasons of the Abyss", on the album of the same name. It's well done too.
Thrash is a mix of hardcore punk music and regular metal. You'll often hear influences from other genres too though. That type of punk, as far as I can tell, gets its appeal from it's rhythm, it's intensity and speed, and often it's lyrical themes. The rhythms, speed, and intensity of the music are a key part of thrash, and similar lyrical themes often carry over. Metal is a very large genre, but pure heavy metal, or at least the type that influenced thrash gets it's appeal from it's riffs(not necessarily from the feeling of rhythm you get from them, but from the sound of them in it's own right), it's soloing, it's powerful drums, and the feeling of "heaviness" you get from listening to it. Thrash, at it's best, combines all of these elements, creating what is, in my opinion, some great music.

Good suggestions, but to give him a good idea of their differing styles over the years, I'd suggest listening to anything from the following CDs.
These are IMO their absolute best:
1-Divine Intervention....the first album with replacement drummer Paul Bostaph, some of their most agressive music ever
2-Reign in Blood....Widely recognized as a thrash metal landmark, it's one of the best thrash records ever. Every track is text-book perfect thrash metal
3-South of Heaven....This one just doesn't get enough credit. It's fuckin awesome, a must-have
4-Show No Mercy....Thier first album, it has some great songs that have practically been forgotton. "Crionics" is one of my favorite Slayer songs ever and most people never heard it
5-Diabolus In Musica....An often over-looked masterpiece. It's one of the most unique albums they've made and it stands out because of it. Even though it's quite different, this is one of my favorites
Honorable Mention:
Live Undead---An early live album, it contains songs from their first 2 albums Show No Mercy and Haunting the Chapel). The live versions kick ass, but like I said it's only songs from 2 albums so there isn't a whole lot to see here.
Undisputed Attitude---A compilation of cover songs, Slayer pays tribute to their influences from the old-school punk/metal genres. A good listen if you appreciate that kind of music.
Decade of Agression---A double-disk live album, this is also one of my favorites. Released in early 1990's, it contains all the best songs from all their best albums to date, and all of them are performed even better then the originals. A must-have for true fans.

I absolutely hate people who say that. Honestly, it's not THAT hard to listen to the music, and understand what they're saying. 98% of the time the songs are nothing like that either. I get in heated arguments almost everyday with people about this because they refuse to quit being ignorant and listen to what i'm saying, or the music. I've told people I'm listening to the fucking dreamtheater, rise against, a perfect circle, foo fighters, etc. and they retort with "oh heavy death metal shit.", seriously. It's really getting retarded.
I also hate when someone asks what type of music I like, i'll tell them metal, punk, hardcore, rock. and they reply with "slayer?!"

I think Megadeath are a bit tame for what most would describe as "thrash metal" though. Tornado of Souls is a good song :)
Prefer melodicy too. I also hate people who "express" themselves and "emotions" through music. For example:
Trapped in purgatory
A lifeless object, Alive
Awaiting reprisal
Death will be their acquisition
The sky is turning red
Return to power draws near
Fall into me, The sky's crimson tears
Abolish the rules made of stone
Pierced from below, Souls of my treacherous past
Betrayed by many, Now ornaments dripping above
Awaiting the hour of reprisal
Your time slips away
Raining blood
From a lacerated sky
Bleeding its horror
Creating my structure
Now I shall reign in blood!
A rather popular song, just sounds stupid. Especially when screamed.

I wouldnt call Megadeth "tame" in the least bit, listen to "Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!" for some real thrash, none of the shit on there is "tame". Not playing as fast as you fucking can like Slayer doesnt mean a band is "tame".
Rust In Peace has some thrash greats like "Take No Prisoners", "Holy Wars", hell every song on there is great, but it isnt as edgy as their early albums, none of their stuff after SFSGSW is.

That's what I mean. I don't listen to music for the musical ability. If I wanted to do that I'd may as well set a MIDI program running 400 notes a second.

WHY DOES EVERYONE PICK ON SLAYERS LYRICS?! Slayer is NOT serious, and don't make serious lyrics. So anyways lets take a look see at the lyrics...
*editing out lyrics, if you are too lazy to look up I sincerly hope your head explodes*
BY GOLLY! I do believe it says 'I' ONCE and 'my' TWICE it says me once however that was not a word you chose to represent your case. The song is about hell and is being described by SATAN. Yeah right Kerry King rules hell... Besides, since when was Slayer 'quite popular, let alone the song 'Raining Blood' their biggest song off that album was 'Angel of Death' but you didnt mention that one because of the lyrical content and saying it sounds stupid is ignorant.
Why the fuck do you listen to music? you say you listen to it for melodicity or whatever you said, and you hate people conveying emotion through lyrics, then you say you don't listen to music for musical ability and you love good songs. Contradiction alert!

Isn't that, pretty much, the entire point of all music?
Since the beginning of time the human race has used various ways of communicating our ideas, stories, thoughts & feelings to each other. From cave paintings and the first guy to bang a stick against a rock, through to modern art and modern music, it's all essentially doing the same thing - expressing the emotions of the individuals that created it.
Forget trying to understand thrash as a genre, if you don't understand that simple concept about all music, then seriously, FOAD.
