I know most of the rules of soccer and stuff, but I don't understand this world cup stuff? If you lose are you eliminated, or what? Can someone please explain this whole process to me.

There are 8 groups consisting of 4 teams in each. 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. After each team in the group plays each other the top 2 teams go through to the knockout round where if you lose you are eliminated from the tournament. This goes on to the final where we get a winner.
Group Stages (32 teams)
Second Round (16)
Quarter Finals (8)
Semi Finals (4)
Final (2)
Winner.
There is also a third place play off where the two losing teams from the Semi Finals play each other for third place.

Alright thanks, After reading that I researched it a little bit. I found what I wanted to know.
Alright now that I found out about the world cup I want to know some of the actual rules. Whats the stoppage time all about? I think thats about it.
Ok, say if a player gets injured, and that wastes 3 mins of the game, the 3 mins will add onto the end of the game to make up for lost time, hence stoppage time.

ha i always wondered that...why don't they just stop the clock when a player is injured, a goal is scored, etc.?
one question...is the goaltender always allowed to use his hands? i was watching one of the games and if i heard correct one of the announcers said at one time the goalie could not use his hands..? I just assumed the goalie can always used his hands.
I never really liked watching soccer (football)...I always found it kind of boring..but I started watching the World Cup and I got to say i am real into it. :)

I often think why don't they stop the time, well, in some cases they do! However, there will normally be aditional time added, it's all based on the opinion of the Referee and the 4th official (another guy off the touch line) to decide how many minutes are played!
With the question towards goalkeepers not being able to pick the ball up....
They can pick the ball up as long they are in the 18yard box (big box round the goal)...however, if a player on the same team has intentially kicked or thrown (from a throw in) the ball back to him then he can't pick it up, he can touch it, he just can't handle it.
However! If a player on the same team, heads or chests it back to him, he's ok ;)
Hope you understand!!
P.S the rules was introduced to avoid time wasters who would just keep passing back and forth to their goalies, a head and chest is ok as you need to be underpressure (not time wasting) to perform such acts!

It's a choice you make to stop time or to add it at the end, the difference isn't that big.
And about the keeper, he's not allowed to touch the ball with his hands under two circumstances:
1. if the ball is outside the 18-yard box.
2. if a defender plays the ball to his keeper with his feet.
