you don't actually have to look at the dot for 30 seconds. If you look at it for five you will get the same effect.

this isn't even an optical illusion. look at the page source, they just use a silly onmouseover key to swap the image when you.... mouse over. there are two images. colorillusion and colorillusion2. there is no illusion, just two diff pics =P
edit: i stand corrected. good illusion.

No... try again.
Do what it tells you to do and if you still don't catch on then you're color blind.
The illusion requires two different pictures to work.

idk if its a screamer and an illusion...but its definitly at least an illusion
if you're a paranoid fuck like i am, do this, take a screen shot of the colored image (when the mouse if off) and take a screen shot with the black and white image and paste both in paint or somethign (2 different documents...), then do what hte directions say (stare at the colored one, then go to the black and white one) and theres your illusion

its not an illusion, but two pictures pasted on to each other, when your mouse moves over it, the second coloured picture appearers.

no, you dont understand
like, do what the directions say
they arent talking about that
like look at the colored picture, and stare at the dot, then move your mouse and look at the black and white, you'll see...

The image is a jpeg file so I don't know how it could possibly be a screamer
Anyways I let the thing sit there for a while and nothing happened, so it's definitely not a screamer, kind of a creepy image though

I actually turned down my speakers even thought its said it wasn't a screamer.

is it me, or like you just have to stare at it for a second to work
i dunno if its a trick, or my eyes
but if you just go to the black white pic, its color and nice pixels
then it starts fading to black and white and all crappy
xdamousex
06-16-2006, 11:54 PM
I think I might understand how the trick works. You know how you can stare at something bright blue, and when you stare at something navy blue it looks black? And how you can stare at something black and the navy blue looks like a lot brighter blue? That colorful picture probably just makes your brain compensate in the same way.
How they figured it out how to do that and what exact colors were needed though I'll never know.
GimmeGimmeGimme
06-17-2006, 01:12 AM
the colors of the picture are inverted, i think. the black dot and the inverted colors actually confuses your brain to see the ACTUAL color-scheme of the picture. it's kind of unique.

Okay, here's the thing.
You have to read the directions.
I swear, if one more person states that it's just two pictures that change when you move the mouse across it, I'm going to fucking point and laugh...
I'm serious! I'll fuckin do it...

Wow, that is the best illusion I have seen.
I learned this in, can you believe it, school.
I didn't have my textbook on me, so here is the wikipedia version...
"Afterimages are caused when the eye's photoreceptors, primarily those known as cone cells, adapt from the over stimulation and lose sensitivity.[1] Normally the eye deals with this problem by rapidly moving the eye small amounts, the motion later being "filtered out" so it is not noticeable. However if the color image is large enough that the small movements are not enough to change the color under one area of the retina, those cones will eventually tire and stop responding. The rod cells can also be affected by this.
When the eyes are then diverted to a blank space, the tired photoreceptors send out little signal and those colors remain muted. However, the surrounding cones that were not being excited by that color are still "fresh", and send out a strong signal. The signal is exactly the same as if looking at the opposite color, which is how the brain interprets it. "
so in other words, the first picture creates the "opposite" color on the new picture once you roll over it. (and the last Para of the quote explains why)
so ya cool illusion, best thought out one i've seen in a long time.

In true Blue Peter style, here's one I made earlier...
http://www.stoink.co.uk/index.php?params=media/167/
The first pic is a negative of the original coloured photo with a black and white image of the photo faded by 50% over the top of it. When this is swapped with the black and white photo (on the mouse over) it makes you see a true negative of the picture, and the negative mixed with the black and white gives you colour, makes no sense, thought not :P

Second best illusion ever. The best ever, of course, is the LSD Spiral. Anyone who likes illusions, follow these directions. I swear, no screamers, no viruses, it's just really, really amazing.
Go to www.tryptamind.com (that site was linked to from here once, for the vaporization technology part).
Go to the "psychadellic stuff" section and download LSDSpiral.exe (i swear, no viruses, and it's a tiny file)
Run the program and enter 13, 15, and 150 when it asks you. push any key.
Hold down the up key until it's going as fast as it can, and then stare at the center of it for 30 seconds. You should look at it from relatively close, because it only affects the part of your vision it occupies when you stare at it.
Look at something. Be amazed.
The illusion also deals with your brain compensating. Somehow, when you look away, it looks like you're on LSD... not that I've ever done LSD before... erherm... Anyways, everything sort of bubbles and melts and it's a very very strong illusion, you literally won't believe your eyes. Total awesomeness. (perss escape to quit when you're done tripping)
What tjgk said is basically correct. Staring at the dot fixes your field of vision in one place, and the color receptors in your eye get "tired" of the colors they are seeing (overstimulation). So when the stimulation stops (black & white picture), the color receptors are desensitized to those colors and send signals to your brain of the colors' opposites.
You have to keep your gaze fixed on the dot even with the black & white pic so that the area of your retina that has been "burned in" remains mapped to the same spots. If you shift your gaze a bit away from the dot, the color suddenly goes away or fades dramatically.
The negative color image is specifically constructed (probably by an image manip program like Photoshop) to have the exact opposite color from the correct one, so that you see the correct colors in the afterimage.
