Eddie Johnson of the U.S. side was asked whether he was comparing a sporting event to a war.
"Yeah," he responded. "Whenever you put your jersey on and you look at your crest and the national anthem's going on, and you're playing against a different country, it's like you do or die, it's survival of the (fittest) over 90 minutes-plus. We're going to go out there and do whatever we've got to do, make tackles, do the things when the referee's not looking. ... to get three points." :blahblah:
This one is coming up quick and I'll be real interested in what happens!
Those are strong comments from a group that looked pretty overmatched against the Czechs!
I'm predicting Italy 2-1  ......and U?

I'll be in Kaiserslautern supporting the US, but I don't have much hope of them pulling off anything more than a tie (and even that seems unlikely).

i was just about to say that exact quote henkie...i think it all comes down to how the teams play...i'll be pullin for an upset though. eddie johnson is a good player, no doubt he'll be one to watch
and the part about doing shit when the refs aren't looking, thats just being realistic, you can't say nobody pull foul moves when refs aren't looking, hes just saying that he'll do anything to win.

He's not comparing it to THE war, he's comparing it to war. A battle, a fight. Get it?

i put 2,000 pounds on italy winning, if italy lose i will have to kill the guy who supports america in the bar and i am serious, i will at least beat him up.
This worldcup first stage has made many people rich i am sure, i hate the second stage though, the scores then are very unpredictable :(

I think it'll be similar to today's (well yesterday's) Argies Vs S&M match. I'll go for 5-0.

These "tough" words are not a bad idea by Johnson. He knows U.S. are in tough situation and wants to fire up his squad. That might be the only way to get them to play a physical game with Italy. Their attack must improve greatly for them to have a chance. The first goal will be important in this game. The U.S. desperate needs to score early to boost their confidence and their play. I see the Italians taking this match 3-1 or 4-1. I hope I'm wrong.

On the subject of the US and soccer/football. Have any of you brits seen those Budweiser commercials they play on BBC1 and ITV during the games. Those are fucking hilarious.
For those who haven't seen them (not sure if they play them in the USA): It's basically two announcers commenting on soccer. The only problem is they obviously don't know much about the game, so they say stuff like "Well it's been a tough match so far, but let's see how they do in the third and fourth quarter".
I'll see if I can find them on google video or somewhere else.

Those ads are the only + point about having to watch a match on ITV. The BBC coverage pisses on it in every area. For instance instead of Gabby Fucking Logan the Beeb has Lineker, Hansen, Leonardo (ex Brazilian) and Ian Wright who is unitentionally hilarious (imo). Also if there is 3 minutes added time it takes ITV about 2 of those minutes to get "3 minutes extra time" onto the tv screen. BBC's commentators are also superior (imo) and ITV generally just feels tacky.

you get more expert advice on bbc though, on itv they bring the nobodies to talk in between the matches, on the bbc they at least bring people who are somebody’s or semi somebody’s.
i personally like the bbc more, it pisses me off watching itv matches, right before kickoff they try and make max money by doing a 1 min advert.
If channel 4 had football I would watch channel4, channel 4 has the best documentaries and news. bbc is worth 10 pounds per year, but the 120 pounds we pay in tv licenses for the bbc is nonsense.
oh yeah, gabby on itv, she looks like a whore, she dresses like a whore most of the times, she most likely was a whore before she made her way up in the itv tv presenters.
anyways, COME ON ITALY, make me money.

The American announcers may not be that great, but they are far more interesting than the British announcers. They just seem so detached from the game at all. I wish I could watch the Mexican ones, they get so into it.
I don't think the guy meant anything by it when he compared the game to war. Yeah, it's like a battle, but when you listen to what he said, he was talking about the respect he has for the soldiers who are serving right now and he just kind of likened himself to them. I think people took the quote about the game being a war out of context and made it much worse than it was.
EDIT: I love the Adidas commercials with the two kids picking their teams of world class players. Those are great.

Lol, there's a guy who announces for Univision (I think), and he's not Mexican, but he just says "GOL" over and over, like fifteen times.
"GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL" almost like a siren going off, it's pretty funny.

Yeah... after Poland got elimanted, I had to take up a new team. I choose the Czech's. Poles and Czechs are not so different from eachother and I really do like there team. They have great potential IMO. I am supporting the Czech's with a temporary avatar but I will always have the "PL" in the signature :D. Who are you cheering for Toretto?
GOOD LUCK TO THE AMERICAN TEAM! ONE MORE HOUR. :D

get your facts right, a war was started over salvador fans smashing the hotel of the opposing team, later that week the neighbouring county got invaded by salvador.

italy sucks so badly this worldcup, i lost almost 3,000 gbp this worldcup, that's worth more than my trip to germany for the iran mexico game ffs. czech republic and italy must both lose, they don't deserve to goto the second stage let alone have a chance to win the worldcup.
