Being one of the few respectable people here that actually like them, I can say that you need some enlightening.
Cedric Bixler Zavala(lead singer) and Omar Rodriguez Lopez(guitarist) left At The Drive In because they felt like they were being held back. There was no death of a manager, the band just split up. The other member of ATDI formed Sparta, which has basically gone nowhere after the breakup.
The Mars Volta for me introduced me into progressive music. I like the random blankness of sounds and buzzes, but can see how people can hear that and go 'what the fuck?'. Now me telling people that they suck because they hate them isn't my thing. I'm just saying that I like them for their originality, experimentality, and overall psychotic live shows where it seems they are just going crazy and playing shit. To me that is exciting. I can't wait to see them again in October.
Anyway, keep listening to them because they are a great band. Just get your facts straight next time.

Ahhh whatever, maybe I was just being a douchenozzle...
Personally, I think At the Drive-in were the better band. I found their raw energy to be outstanding, and it's a shame that they did end up splitting.
But still, you have been under a rock for quite some time. The Mars Volta have been around for a while now. Great band, keep listening to them :).

DeLoused in the Comatorium is the greatest album of the 21st century so far... and it will be tough to beat.
So yea, I've been listening to them for a while.

I feel the same way. Frances The Mute was just so dissapointing after Deloused. I mean, sure, I can listen to Frances, but would rather hear Deloused 9 times out of 10.
