I can not understand why pitchers in the bullpen need so much rest. They come in and pitch one or two innings at a time. Are they so weak? These are big, strong dudes in their prime. Yet, we hear how bullpens are weary and need rest. I am thinking of Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. Announcers will question whether he can go two innings. He will make the Hall of Fame. But I do not get it. There were pitchers in the old days who pitched double hitters.

the bullpen guys throw heat for 1 or 2 innings.
they dont pace themselves .they just go all out .
They condition themselves for shorter spells on the mound.

Regardless of how many innings you pitch, pitching multiple days in a row makes a lot of wear and tear on the arm. You can't constantly throw baseballs at 95 MPH, day after day. Think of starters who often need 4 days before starts.

Most relievers are fireballers who can only pitch one inning of good stuff. RARELY does a reliever pitch more than one inning. There are very very few long relievers with success in the MLB, and most of them are former or future starters.

Throwing a full speed fastball is one of the most destructive physical acts in all of sports. It's a proven fact that you dislocate your elbow to a degree on every pitch. And they usually throw multiple times a week, thus proving they are the big, strong guys you are talking about.

Curveballs also do a lot of damage to the arm.

Well yes to some, Mike Timlin can't pitch every night. But Jon Papelbon is young and pitches alot. He saved all 3 games this weekend against the Braves.

Papelbon is sooooo good that he's allowed 1.5 fewer inherited runners to score than the average pitcher would have. So his True ERA is -0.12. I'm serious.
