Italy all the way! Although I know those Aussies are quick and Italy doesn't play well against teams that like to pressure. We saw what happened in the USA Italy match in the 2nd half.

i think this match is going to be completely in the refs decision, Australia plays rough (yes i can admit it, its just what were use to) and Italy dives (so does Aloisi...) so it depends if we get a ref the awards dives or punishes them... THAT will be the decider...

I agree with most people, the aussies really could cause an upset with the form that they have under hiddink. But, overall the italians have better players, it's just a question of if they play as the better team.

What a load of shite. The ref couldn't be arsed running about for another 30 minutes so he gave away a penalty. Disgraceful and it can't be hard to figure out that if injury time is up the Italian is going to launch himself when in the penalty box.

Tainted the match and the tournament. Australia were the deserving winners and have done themselves proud and were if not for another awful ref they would be in the Quarters.

The Italians are pure scum, worse than any other nation I've seen.

Not really. Diving completley ruins the game. The italians (lower case i) have successfully fucked up the game of Football. It is absolutely ridiculous how they can play like that. Fuckin drama queen pussies.

The Italian player made it look very convincing. He sold that dive very well. He took a step over the sliding defender and dragged his other foot over him, making it look as though the player slid through him, making it a malicious tackle. The Italians earned that PK the whole way, because they were able to sell the ref very well on that call. Overall, the ref did a pretty fair job, only a couple of bad calls throughout the whole game. On the whole, it wasn't the ref's fault that the Italians won. And don't even try to fucking convince me otherwise because to blame a ref for your team's loss is pure bullshit.

That was well acted by the Italian player. It looked perfect and even though Italy is known for its acting/diving, what are you gonna do? You can't ignore something that looked that real.

My anger is towards the Australian defender. Why would he slide in like that? That's Italy's prize, an opportunity to fall over a mistimed tackle. The Italian player wouldn't have ripped a shot from that angle anyway (crying out loud he isn't David Beckham). The Aussie defender should have stayed on his feet and challenged the ball (and don't tell me he didn't have the time). Poor judgement if you ask me.

Disclaimer: I am not a fan of either team and didn't really mind who won.

Although football (soccer) has always been one of my favourite participation sports, it will never be the best spectator sport, IMO, because the elite level game rewards poor sportsmanship. There is no other sport where athletic and coordinated individuals find themselves falling flat on their face so frequently...only to continue playing and running with as much vigour as they demonstrated before they fell. since its world cups and the referees have those little microphones, they should install a camera like in american football (only in really important calls) .
this way the ref would be notified it wasnt a foul. I'm only suggesting this in really big tourneys, and game deciding calls like this. This idea definatly would be weird and im not so sure its even good, just throwing out a suggestion.

for anyone that didnt see the game, very soon into it it wasnt a matter of, can Australia beat italy, it was a question of can italy beat Australia... we were all over them, we had them out skilled, out played and out numbered...

whoever said that wasnt worth a red, taking out a player when there is a chance to score is a red card. thats it. theres no two ways about it... it was a late tackle at a scoring oppurtunity...

and tottis queer dive really pisses me off cause our player did a perfectly legal, early tackle at the ball, totti rolled it around him, then just bitched out... a great show of skill, then the italian in him comes out...

just case having the most controversial goal in the tournament against us wasnt enough (jap), we now have the second most contreversial goal against us as well...

and theyre thinking about installing a video ref to the game so the ref isnt a blind stupid fuck ALL the time...

No, that's were your wrong, you had Italy outnumbered, but in no way outskilled or outplayed. Think of it this way: the entire second half, the Aussies played up a man, and how many shots on goal did they have? 0. Refs fault? No. They simply didn't attack, they decided to sit back against Italy, and when they did attack, they were denied.

I love how people forget the red card on Materazzi that put the Italians down. Yellow card, ok, but a red card, are you kidding me?

Perfectly legally, ok, but incredibly poor mistimed slide that he paid for - the Italians know how to capitalize on a mistake, the Aussies had their mistake to capitalize on in Materazzi being sent off, but they weren't able to. And here's the part I love: the poor sportsmanship involved in losing this match. All I've seen throughout this entire thread is "fucking Italians", "fucking pussies", and things like that, but what's the bottom line? The bottom line is the Italians are moving on in the World Cup, they deserve to be there, they outplayed Australia a man down, they aren't going back to Italy, and the Aussies are going back Down Under. not only did we have major possesion of the ball, italy never really looked dangerous in the box at all... you had 2 decent shots that got to our keeper the entire game that looked dangerous...

haha, as stated before you, i corrected myself dickhead... and it wasnt mistimed at all, it was early... the italian had enough time to control the ball and move it around the player, and probably could have had a shot, that if he had of gotten in, i would be gratious in defeat like Aussies normally are... but to win by a bad reffing call is low... even for italy...

and when you forcifully obstruct a player in a goal scoring oppurtunity, it is a red card. its a bit harsh, i know, and i think a yellow probably would have suited that incedent better, but he was on the books with the red...

Italy cheated their way through? Sorry but were we watching the same game? We had a man down and you still couldn't shoot a goal on nets, but yeah it's all the ref's fault! No way can Australia ever lose, they can only lose by bad calls!

Whatever... it was a bad call, but apparently the red over Materazzi was a bad call as well... not that it justifies it, but shows that reffing, in general, is quite bad on this tournament, not the Italians fault.

Anyway, Italy goes against Ukraine, I think they have the easiest game of all the others in quarter finals to advance to semifinals...

Ukraine plays the same as Italy... however, their attack isn't as effective, so, we will be seeing an offensive italian team this Friday... :)

i think this match is going to be completely in the refs decision, Australia plays rough (yes i can admit it, its just what were use to) and Italy dives (so does Aloisi...) so it depends if we get a ref the awards dives or punishes them... THAT will be the decider...

Face it, the decision was shocking and WE are the ones that got screwed by it.

Australia were total underdogs and the only way one of the top teams can beat us is by taking a dive in the penalty box. That makes me bloody proud to be Australian.

I don't see anyone complaining on how Theirry Henry took an elbow to the chest today, went down to the ground holding his nose, and was able to get a free kick that a goal was scored off of.

I actually think that it was wrong too... Spain got eliminated by a referee again. But I made the thread at half time...

However, I don't blame the french nor the italians for that... referees have sucked so far...

Too true. If you look at the statistics for free kicks given to top sides as opposed to those given to lesser known teams there is an absolutely HUUUUGE difference.

Referee's should not decide matches, the skills of the teams should.
