Let me first state that I am a fan of King Crimson.

I'm just curious, is there anyone on this forum that hates or dislikes King Crimson? It seems like over the last few months many people have become fans (which is good), probably because of this site (like me).

I'm guessing the reason there is such positive response is because one would have to be interested in that type of music just to check them out, and they are fairly underground which is nice for the music elitist ego. Plus they make good music.

Anyway, to salvage this thread:

1. Discuss King Crimson, why did you check them out, do you like them, what's your favorite song and album. Add any other information you feel important.

2. If we had to choose one band to represent the music forum, who would it be?

My answers:

1. I started listening to King Crimson a few months ago when someone said they sound like Pink Floyd. I like them a lot, but I still prefer Floyd. My favorite song is, and I know this will make me sound like a noob, is 21st Century Schizoid Man. My favorite album is probably Red, but this is a close race.

2. Right now, I say King Crimson. They have a wide appeal and no general disgust.

1. Exactly like you, someone called them like Pink Floyd and I checked to see who was better. I've only listend to their first cd and I liked all their songs. Especially Court of the Crimson King.

I've read that that was their greatest album and the rest suck so... I kinda feel stupid for not even giving them a chance so later I will listen to em.

2. Celin Dion.

Yes! Mr. Fripp is a genious. I haven't really listened to them for a while now, but I'm starting to get back into them. My favorite all-time album would have to be "Tree of a perfect pair" I used to like them a lot because of their "indie" type sound.. Fav. song.. probably Sleepless off of Tree of a perfect pair album.

Ive listened to alot of their stuff after court of the crimson king and found it to be a little to "crazy avant garde 80's" for me.

The whole set of Larks tongue in aspic is great.

Can anyone recommend songs with brilliant structure and crazy-amazing solos like 21st century and pictures of a city?

if you havent heard pictures of a city , do it right now, you will be blown away.

How can you hate King Crimson. They're great! I like 21st Century Schizoid Man... yes thats right, I have quite a few of their albums, and even though it's considered their most overrated song, although I don't believe in this overrated crap, it's my favorite song of theirs.

I agree on Starless' greatness.

It is just so amazing when you consider that ITCOTCK came out in 1969!!! Imagine being around in that year and hearing that for the first time - it would be absolutely mindblowing!

I've only really been getting into King Crimson lately and I'm pretty excited because they're one of those bands that I think will become one of my favourite ever. One thing I love about them is that I can listen to their albums over and over again, and I seem to pick up something new every time.

I'm very much into the first ITCOTCK, In the Wake of Poseidon, Islands, Larks' Tongues in Aspic and Red.

I've heard bits and pieces from all the other ones, and I'm currently getting into THRAK, Three of a Perfect Pair, Beat and Discipline. I really hope they'll be as good as the earlier albums. With Tony Levin they should be :D.

Unfortunately I've been a bit too busy too listen to much music, but when I get the chance, I know I'll be listening to King Crimson.

i've been into them for a few years. my favorite albums by them are Larks Tongues In Aspic and Red.

despite what the poster above me said... mars volta IS geat but NOT better than king crimson. anyone who has listened to all albums by both bands multiple times will come to that realization. yes, omar has stated that king crimson is his favorite band and biggest influence, so the simularity is VERY apparent... although nothing beats the original king crimson.

In an interview I read he said Can were the band\'s biggest influence...

The only complaint I have about the band is how their lineup kept changing throughout the 70s and so on.

The albums I own right now are islands, red, and in the wake of poseidon. I am currently investing sometime into collecting more of their discography though.

I got into King Crimson from listening to a lot of ELP. I was really into that stuff for a while and decided to check out what other projects the members were involved in, which led me to KC. And yes, Starless owns.

They are a great band but I am not into them too much. I have all of their albums (I think), and they are pretty good. I just don't dig them as much as I expected before I started listening to them.

King Crimson is by faviorite band, they have a sound no one has and Tool is the closest band that lives up to that complixity that King Crimson presents. I have all the albums, from their first debute album and to the present album, hehe, I even have giles, giles and fripp album (before King Crimson) I enjoy all the albums except the very pop albums "Beat" - "Three of a perfect pair" for some reason I just can't get into those albums, sounds to 80's, the only album I don't detest in their 80s era is "Disipline" which to me is something I never even heard. A friend showed me that album and I thought it was a present band, but he told me it was an 80's album. King Crimson is way ahead of their time creating these new sounds that no one has even dare to accomplish. Look where they are at now, it's definantly something I have never heard.

Also King Crimson was before Pink floyd, so how can Crimson sound like Pink Floyd. It's the other way around, Pink Floyd sounds like King Crimson is some influential way.

Are you sure? I think Pink Floyd formed in '65, and King Crimson was in '68 or '69. I might be wrong though.

Either way, I heard of Pink Floyd first, and King Crimson was described to me as having a similar sound.

King Crimson is my favorite band of any Rock genre. I can go on and on about them. Only thing is that, I find Red to be a very overrated album. Providence reminds me of European Free Improv, and Starless is a beautiful ballad, but the rest always seemed pretty bland to me. Lizard, and Larks' Tongues in Aspic showed the band when they got really experimental, so naturally, those ones are my favorites.

Well you can say that, but Pink Floyd has a totaly different sound what is known today than it did when it started, it's more evolved. But I don't think Pink Floyd sounds nothing like Crimson, there might be influence, but there is no, "That sounds like Crimson." I think what Pink Floyd presents doesn't even come close to what King Crimson presents and vise versa.

1. I got into King Crimson after finding out that they were an influence on Radiohead. I first got '21st Century Schitzoid Man', and that was quickly followed up by 'One More Red Nightmare'. I'm currently downloading their Discography, which is 75% complete, but at the moment my favourite would be 'Moonchild', 'I Talk To The Wind', or 'In the Court of the Crimson King'.

2. I can't say as I even posted much on here.

ITCOTCK is considered the first prog album. While Pink Floyd may have been around earlier, they were still in their more psychedelic phase at the time.

I find early KC pretty tame compared to the \'73/\'74 era

Live Crimson is where it's at. That's where Fripp and company trully shine. In fact a lot of the newest material, 1994-2003, was road tested before it was commited to CD. Right now I am listening to a live show from March 12, 1972 Denver CO. Part of the Collector's Club release.

You can download live Crimson/Fripp from www.dgmlive.com

Great stuff.
