Right so. I'm on the free 10 day trial of World of Warcraft, and I've got mixed emotions. Each night I've gone to bed thinking that it's just a goofy hack-and-slash, level-up, item-grabber game. But every morning I wake up, excited about playing it again.

I'm looking for opinions. Does it get better or worse as it progresses? More interesting or more monotonous? Is it worth the game cost and the monthly fee?

And no, my life could not be put towards something more interesting or productive.

I'm looking for profundity. Go!

I played for well over a year and I started playing in closed stress testing (pre release). I've since quit and don't plan on going back.

In short, levels 1-59 are GREAT! It's a stellar game! But, the issues crop up at level 60 where there is a full paradigm shift. From 1-59 you go out in small groups of UP TO 15 people and you vanquish foes in dungeons and grab sweet loot. You can do this at your leisure and have a good time!

At 60 however, there are only a handful of small dungeons (1-15 player) and you quickly run out of things to do.

This leaves you with 2 options.

1) Raid - Join a raid guild and go off to explore the 40 man team dungeons and get EPIC gear. Problem is the logistics and time involved to do this. It IS a second job where you have to show up on time and spend money (dkp) to get items. The other issue is, you need to FINISH and COLLECT ALL the gear from the first 40 man dungeon to go onto the next AS A GUILD. Meaning, you need to run, say, Molten Core SO MANY TIMES that EVERY member of your raid guild has ALL the gear they can get. Then do the same thing for Blackwing Lair, then for Ahn'Quarij, then for Naxx, etc, etc, etc. Can you say never ending time and money sink?

2) PvP - Try to get to Rank 14. This literally takes about 40-60 hours a week and up to 16-18 hours a DAY to achieve. But once you DO get there, the PvP aspect is essentially over. Especially once you get all the PvP rewards and Exalted with the 3 battlegrounds.

To summarize, 1-59 is great! Then it's a grind any way you look at it once you hit 60. The game just changes and I've since left because of it.

(I was in a raid guild and we were done with ZG and MC while starting BWL and AQ) I just got bored.

^ that guy is right. 1-59 is good The single group dungeons are great fun and is when the instancing is a huge boon to the game. Some of the dungeons are challenging and while you're in them you won't think about levelling, but getting past the next boss.

Then I hit 60 and the raid content is still instanced which destroyed one of my favorite things in EQ, the max level raid community. Inter-guild drama, griefing and racing people for spawns. There are pros to the instancing, but to me it was just too boring.

I recommend you find a group of players or guild and make friends early on, and work up through the dungeons with them. Always try to be in a group with at least one person you already know because it makes it 10x more fun than a pure pickup party. You can /whisper each other and laugh about your horrible group mates you picked up

Basically, if 1-5 months (you can get 60 in a month with lots of playtime, more than two months is probably a longshot) of good times is worth the cost, then have fun. And if you hit 60 you may decide to stay anyway.

I agree 100%.

I'm too an ex-hardcore WoW player that has seen all. Lv60 Paladin in full LB w/Thunderfury (woot woot 2nd server-wide!) :)

My only recommendation: Since you're so new, here's a tip!

If you want to tank pick a Warrior.
Do you pick a Paladin and expect to do alot of damage or tanking. You will be healing and buffing!
If you want to deal damage pick: Mage or Rogue.
If you want to heal primarily pick Priest!
If you want to dominate at PvP on Horde Pick Shammy.
On Alliance, any class but Paladin.
Paladins are 100% support class, if you dont want to play support roles, change classes now!

Hopefully that helps.

Thanks for the tips on the level 60 deal. I'd heard there were those raids that took hours on end and such. I really don't have that kind of time or patience to spend on a game, which is one of the reasons I was hesitant about it in the first place.

Just stop , ive never played the game but i hear it ruins peoples lifes becuase they get addicted to it , so stop while you can.
I've heard the same, but it might be too late for me. I just picked up a copy at Wal-Mart, 'cause it was on sale for $19.99, and I want to do my part to help Wal-Mart in its path to global domination.

Doubt I'll get hardcore addicted, though. I've seen what people who do are like (MORE DOTS! MORE DOTS! MORE DOTS!) plus I've got too many other things going on. I'm thinking it'll be more or less something to while away the later hours of night after I get home and before The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

WoW is great. I play it for fun, not excessively.

The highest level I have is only a 31, but i have about 5 other characters in the 20's. It's a fun game to play, no matter how you play it, hardcore or not.

Keep that attitude man! You're in your WoW prime! Slow your leveling and just ENJOY the game. 60 might seem like a goal, but a monkey would eventually get there by accidentally killing enemies enough times. Enthrall yourself in the story and make as many characters as you wish!

Have fun and enjoy your stay in Azeroth!

I actually recommend getting into WoW. The dungeons are a lot more fun than grinding/questing IMO. Just don't get feared into the whelps or you get a 50dkp minus!

If you want to deal damage pick: Mage or Rogue.

Hunters should be mentioned too, they have the best aggro reducing ability in the game and can essentially burn from 100% until death. Once you get acceptable gear and get the shot sequencing down, you can hang in the top 10 with ease.

I did everything in Molten Core, Blackwing Lair and did Ahn'Quiraj up until C'Thun on my main before retiring. Full Dragonstalker, Ashjre'thul, Prestor's Talisman of Connivery... I have a ctprofile somewhere but I don't feel like finding it.

I played this game nearly everyday for the first year after it's release or so. I started out occasionally running with groups but for the most part I leveled up simply by grinding and running quests and was really enjoying myself. Eventually, when I hit 58, I joined a really great 20 or so man guild that evolved into a giant raid guild that I was the main off tank for... and that's when the drama started. People bitching at eachother all the time, ego's, crying about not having enough dkp for a specific item, failed raids due to non-attendance. Just a buncha bullshit and it ruined it for me. I though about joining another server but I just couldnt bring myself to level a toon all the way up to 60 again.

In retrospect, I'm glad I played this just to see what the mmorpg craze was all about but I don't know if I can suggest this to you. It's all about what you enjoy and I like the single player experience better.

Can't wait to play Prey tonight at midnight.

O fuck Prey is out

Well, if you have $50 you can download it from this (http://www.playtriton.com/prey/) streaming service and play it tonight starting at midnight. The site looks kinda shady but I actually have the game on my pc right now so it does work.

So, just to answer your question, no it's not out quite yet. But I'll be playing this shit in 2.5 hours. Can't wait.

Well, I don't speak for everyone, but those that grew up on Nintendo back in the 80's are now into their mid to late twenties if not thirties. Last time I checked, married adults still play games.

Yes, they do. As a married man in his late twenties I can say that Navid needs an accurate frame of reference.

Agreed. Just for the record, the starter of this thread is not, and has never been, a virgin.

I can already feel myself being drawn slowly into the game. Last night I considered skipping going to my girlfriend's so I could stay home and play. Now, mind you I didn't get off work 'til 8:30, it was a Monday night, and it takes a half hour just to get to her house. So it's not like I woulda been missing out on anything too important. But I resisted. I went to see her. Didn't play all day. My soul still remains in my possession.

One quick question though. Are the character's attributes (strength, agility, etc.) doled out automatically upon leveling up? If so, that kinda stinks, but I guess I'll deal with it.

PsiRedEye22
07-11-2006, 06:56 PM
Yes, they are, but the weird thing is that all the races have slightly altered stats, making each one slightly better suited for a job than the others. You won't notice attributed after you play WoW, they went the way of Baldur's Gate.

On a sidenote, I stayed up till 5AM at my fiances place levelling my alchemist. She was very pissed at me and wouldnt let me sleep till noon.

man I thought the same when i chose my shammy, problem is at lvl 60 you must go resto to come in a raid guild, so there goes your damage and all
you are in the end is another healing slut -_-

If you have nothing else to do whatsoever, then do it. Last summer I played online with some real life buddies of mine, playing Guild Wars, and it made my summer fun, yet shitty at the same time. Going to bed at 3am, waking up at noon, playing till 3am, and repeat, day after day.

Well, I did play WoW till seven in the morning once, but that was because I was levelling with someone and 7AM where I am is 1AM for him, so he has no problem staying up. It is more fun when you group with someone, but it is nice to go solo to run some quests.

My experience with World of Warcraft goes as follows:

I got the game in late August of 2005.

Created a rogue, got him to level 51, got bored.

Created a druid, got him to level 60, got bored.

Took about a 3 month break before wanting to play again.

Created a paladin, got him to level 50, got bored.

Cancelled account, hopefully for good.

I play wow also, I've only been playing for 2 months now and I have a:

37 Night Elf Rogue
19 dwarf hunter (twink)

When I first started it was the funnest game I've ever played but, I do stay up late and get up later than I normaly do. I'm kinda bumed out about the 60 thing, but you can always just PvP for fun or do what I did make a twink or you could make a new guy and work you way up to 60 again but, get the gold of your 60.

For people who don't know about twinks, they have the best stuff for that level, and stay that lvl the whole time. They own in Warsong gultch and stuff.

I just started playing WoW about a month ago, and I love it. I have 2 chars (Level 21 Warlock, and my current Level 26 Rogue) on Jaedanar.

I work every day so I can't level as fast as I'd like, but its still excellent. I love my rogue...there is just so much more to do with it than a caster. With casters, or any other class for that matter, you pretty much just quest...but rogue, they are the ganking class, which is too fun. I might be on my way to get or turn in a class, and see an Alliance...just stealth and track his ass till its clear, then POW...cheapshot, backstab, gouge, backstab dead.

Also, I might suggest starting out on a newer server,, such as Jaedanar...because the economy isn't crazy flooded.
